A map showing the places I explore (unexplored areas have the "the fog" effect so I can automatically see whats there.) What do I do? I have java 1.14.4. I found one map that looks really good in the java section but it says its 1.7 and 1.6. I thought I had the latest version. Not the first time I've seen a reference to a 1.7. So I am confused. exactly what do I do to get a map mod?
As long as you have Forge or Fabric modloaders installed for whichever Launcher you use [Regular, Twitch, MultiMC for example] (either modloader installed, not that both Forge & Fabric work together, only Forge & Liteloader do for 1.12.2 and versions all the way back in 1.7.2 or so) and you put the map mod into the mods folder along with other mods you should be fine.
I have 2 videos in this playlist if your 'curious' about what features many of them have, some for 1.14 some for 1.12.2 or 1.7.10: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbOPi5L7V78Ll4lhc4YF0eFdPgTVGScHk but I recommend checking the mod links I posted to get an idea besides what I've covered. I'm not trying to plug myself with linking my playlist, just showing you so you get a visual idea of them in action besides what you see on a website in text form.
Modloaders are used to install mods, think of them like a compatibility layer onto the game, we don't have an official modding API, so it's not the same as say the Steam Workshop where it's right there and ready for you to add mods you have to add the layer/modloader yourself when it comes to Minecraft modding.
Just install either one (Forge and Fabric [needs a file called Fabric API though which you can get here: https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/fabric-api], they aren't compatible together keep that in mind), they will create a mods folder and a modded version of the game. Once you have the mods (or additional things like cores or libraries if the mod uses them for additional code, compatibility between other mods or other aspects not possible in the main mod) then your good to go.
Otherwise if your using multiple versions of Minecraft and have mods for them separate them like 1.12.2 or 1.14.4 so they don't conflict (more so useful if you use the Vanilla Launcher by Mojang, others like Twitch and MultiMC you don't need to worry as they make is easier to separate these instances which the Vanilla one does not. 1.12.2 and prior of Forge mods will be loaded inside folders but 1.13+ that feature was removed so you'd only be putting mods in folders so they don't conflict instead of having them not conflict and running them like in 1.12.2.
Also best to keep in mind the version your going to use, for example 1.7.10 and 1.14.4 aren't the same version, but sometimes 1.14 and 1.14.4 might not have compatibility other times they might, only few times like 1.9.4 to 1.10.2 has it been possible for mods to be on many versions but don't expect everything to be compatible, this is either due to how Mojang changes things each update or the Modloaders (Forge or Fabric) changing things themselves.
Hopefully that makes sense or was helpful.

For map mods for 1.14 Forge or Fabric I recommend
-Antique Atlas (a book minimap mod compared to just one on the screen from the start)
-Mappy,
-Xaero (Minimap or World Map, Fair-Play is more for PVP situations) or
-VoxelMap.
Just use any of the map mods below for viewing waypoints, where you have been before and other customisable settings.

ok now there are modloaders...so I dont just install one of those map mods into my game folder I need to install something else first?
Fabric requires an additional modloader file, Forge does not.

Also best to get the installers from the official sites, many sites steal or put malware inside files. For Forge go to this site http://files.minecraftforge.net/maven/net/minecraftforge/forge/index_1.14.4.html and Fabric here: https://fabricmc.net/use/
