I know a variety of coding languages, including Java. I enjoy playing Minecraft but it does get boring. I want to make my own custom modifications so I can enjoy the Minecraft I want to play with friends. Does anyone know how I would proceed in trying to make one? I don't know what programs I can use to make it, how to run it or anything. I have installed modifications before, but they were all created by other players.
Unless you want to make things unnecessarily difficult for yourself, you're going to want to use Minecraft Forge. It's by far the easiest way to create a mod. Now, with that being said, it's not easy, per say... you have to be pretty resilient to even get through the workspace setup process. Forge works well with the Eclipse IDE, which I very much suggest using.
If you install the development package from the Forge site, you should be able to follow the documents inside to set up your workspace. From there, you can use your preferred search engine to find tutorials on whatever it is you want to do. Be mindful of the fact that the Minecraft code changes dramatically with each new update, so some tutorials may lead you astray if they're for a different version. There are also a multitude of tutorials that teach improper coding practices or are just plain misleading, so you have to take everything with a grain of salt. Above all, you're going to have to be resilient. Your goals may seem impossible at first, and you may have a very hard time understanding how the software architecture works. But with time, you'll get to know your way around the modding environment, and with a lot of trial and error, pretty much anything is possible. When it's all said and done, it's a very rewarding process.
