So I've been wanting to download Minecraft Forge for a while now, but I've been too paranoid to do so. With Norton, usually, I just call it equivalent to an overprotective parent, especially since it has that popularity-based detection thingy. But Norton can actually be really helpful, and this might be the case with Forge for me. Whenever I download forge, Norton detects the installer as a high-risk file that can give me a Heur virus. Most of my friends have Forge installed, and plenty of others use it, but I'm still not sure whether or not I should download it. Any thoughts?
I have installed it on the standard launcher for years now. I did have worries at first just like with mod repost sites which are a lot worse for ad sites. I know that a lot. Also authors that need adfly to give them donations. I hate those too. Big mod authors too. Bugged me a lot.
Anyways, I usually use third party launchers like Multi-MC & Twitch (highly recommended since works well with curse for safe mod downloading and a good range of things. Most safe mod site I visit and know of, I myself need to see what other sites are worth it since there are more unsafe mod reposting sites out there and its disgusting) now since they do forge downloads automatically and you avoid the ad website forge goes through.
Yes I do have adblocks and antivirus and have had Norton in the past. I do understand where you coming from when it comes to ad sites or being unsure about such things.
I'd say if you want to get it for the standard launcher you have to get it by just going for the skip ad button and ignore anything else on the ad page, if the download is available, download it then close the ad site and it will download in the background. Once done just clear the download cache panel mention that you downloaded it. Go to the downloads folder, click forge, then select client (client being the PC, server being for more open ended of course, tech talk sorry ).
If you want a safer way (which I recommend more than the ad site way with the standard launcher) I'd say just use Twitch or Multi-MC's launchers (they are third party launchers but safer than messing with the standard launcher which I'd say is better for standard Minecraft fun than getting confused with game version profiles which gets very messy. I know from a lot of experience doing that XD) the third party launchers skip that cautiousness of the ad website part. Which is why I like them more as well as other features they have. But this is for custom or fully made modpacks on curse more so (twitch specifically of course for the curse fully made modpacks since Twitch & Curse work together now, obvious by the Twitch signin we have to do now with curse.com & minecraft forum logins nowadays. Yay. Not a fan but eh.). I am a custom modpack maker (I play lots of survival so used to it a lot but am a singleplayer person mostly, anyways, besides the point) and I play on any old or new versions from 1.2.5 to 1.12.2. If you want something easier again then custom modpacks. Just use a modpack launcher like FTB or Technic. FTB works with curse also so they I trust a lot more. Also FTB launcher is like the older Twitch launcher experience. Its good for its mod disabling feature. Hopefully not getting to complex now. So use to modding I apologise.
Also .jar files can be annoying as well as ad site to some antivirus which is a pain. So I don't blame you.
My highest recommendation is just use another launcher (Twitch or Multi-MC) to download forge if you are cautious. I do this method more so since I'm sick of going to get forge the ad site way and know what mod version I'm in the mood for at the time of creating a custom modpack. If you do know how to make custom modpacks, or just want one to play with friends that is a already built modpack. Or don't know how to set version profiles between modded and the standard game on the standard launcher.
I might make a youtube video on this actually thinking about it if people are ad site unsure. Sorry if my commenting got confusing. Been doing this since I first got Minecraft after 3 years of playing the game. Mods were just too much for me compared to the standard game since not much of a creative type/builder to the same extent as most people.
I have planned to do a youtube video for a while now and I think tried to make one about this subject matter towards forge & mods in general but not uploaded it yet. I'll get onto it if people new to modding need help. Again. Sorry if I went overboard on the forge, ad site and modding/launcher aspects. Its like second nature to me now.

@George66 Ok then... I don't know how a reply would make much difference when it's been archived, a reply would more so keep the thread updated or recent more than anything I'd have though.
Besides that though from what I just noticed a few minutes ago they might be moving these sort of forums into curseforge. I don't know if that means it will be continued after archiving with all existing information or not and just be from scratch again, I assume Fandom is just freeing up resources by removing the MCForums and putting in into a existing platform rather than a separate between them or something... Again I have no clue, but it seems to be where they are putting it besides people moving to FTB or PlanetMinecraft or where-ever so... I don't know really what's going on.

Ah, no, don't worry about it. I can understand all of it. Good to know there are more tech geeks in this community than I though XD
