Okay, so this tutorial was originally meant for my friends, but I figured why not post it here for anyone to use? Hope it helps, whoever you are.
Step 1: Aquire Proper version files
Open up the Minecraft launcher and click “New Profile” in the bottom left.
Change the version of the profile to the latest recommended build that is supported by Pixlemon. (See step 3) Select the profile and hit play. This will download all the 1.8 files that Forge will need later. This is not the profile you’ll use to play Pixelmon.
Step 2: Navigate to your Minecraft Folder (known as .minecraft on Windows)
Once Minecraft title screen loads up, go to Options>Resource Packs and click “Open resource pack folder”. That should open a finder window like this:
Double-click this to exit the resource pack folder and view the Minecraft Folder. Now leave that finder window open for us to use later. Close Minecraft.
Step 3: Downloading without getting a virus
Open your browser and navigate to pixelmonmod.com/downloads.php then download the latest recommended versions of Forge and Pixelmon.
Note: this webpage is where you’d find out what version of Minecraft you need in step 1.
These will link you to the following pages.
Here’s some illustrations to help you avoid clicking the wrong link (which has happened to me far too many times).
Forge link will lead here:
Once you have those files, navigate to your downloads folder and launch the Forge Installer. (Don’t launch the Pixelmon jar)
Step 4: Getting around your own security system
If your settings are anything like mine, your Mac will ask you for permission before running jar files downloaded from the internet. (which is nice) This does mean however that we have to do a little extra when trying to run legitimate files. If you’re a younger Minecraftian, I recommend asking your parents before doing this.
If you get the dialogue box above, use the apple logo in the top left of your screen to navigate to System Preferences>Security & Privacy.
Select “Open Anyway”. You’ll probably get one more dialogue box asking you if you’re sure, then you’re home free.
Step 5: Installing Forge
Once you get the Forge Installer launched, you should be given this window.
All the default settings here are what you’re looking for, so there’s no need to change anything. Just hit OK.
If all goes well, you should get a window that tells you Forge was installed correctly and grabbed the required libraries. Step 5 is now done. That’s it. Do you see why I like Forge?
Step 6: Installing Pixelmon
Because Forge is fantastic, all you need to do is drag the Pixelmon file we downloaded earlier into your “mods” folder in your Minecraft Folder. (Which should still be open from Step 2).
Note: If a mods folder does not exist here you can just make one.
Step 7: Allocating enough memory to let Pixelmon run
Open up the Minecraft launcher and select the profile titled “forge”. Then click “Edit Profile” just below that.
Now we need to know how much RAM (Random Access Memory) your computer has, so use the apple logo to access “About this Mac”.
Under the “Memory” tab you’ll see two slots that add up to the total amount of RAM your computer has. This is almost always an even number like 2, 4, 8, or 16.
We want to let Pixelmon use half of your total RAM. In the picture above, that would be 4 GB. (If you only have 2 total GB go ahead and use all of it since 1 doesn't seem to work)
Now that we know how much RAM you have, we can edit the text titled “JVM Arguments” in the Minecraft Launcher. This line looks complicated, but we’re only changing a tiny piece of it.
Select the forge profile, edit profile just like before and click the check box for JVM Arguments so we can edit the text. Change number in the first part from a 1 (the default) into the number that is half your RAM. Example: -Xmx1G becomes -Xmx4G
Now save that profile and hit Play! Have some patience for the first time it loads up, this may take between 2 - 10 minutes.
I hope you have fun with Pixelmon! Please let me know if anything needs correction or clarification in this tutorial.
