While browsing the forum pages I often find posts of people asking for help for basically the same thing "how do I install mods", "how do I install forge". "how do add this mod to my Minecraft"...... A lot of these posts are filled with other members trying to help out and instruct someone on how to install forge correctly. Forge is actually easy to install for those of us who have done it, but can be challenging for those who are new to modded Minecraft.
But what I don't understand is why that always is the solution that is offered to these questions "Install Forge". When most of the cases are simply someone just wants to install some fun mods to play. A lot of the posts are parents with upset children who want to play modded Minecraft and the parent can not figure out the install process for forge and the hundreds of other mods.
Installing Forge is required but you do not have to do it manually. This is the part I do not understand why so many posts direct the person to do everything manually. Curse has made a Minecraft Launcher that will download and install Minecraft, Forge, and Mods for you with just a few clicks. Not to mention that manually installing forge to your default Minecraft directory limits you greatly. You will only have 1 mod directory making it hard to swap out mods or try new ones, no mod packs, and worst part is that it may mess up any worlds you have already been playing if you just start dumping mods into your vanilla install.
I personally feel that using a launcher is the easiest way for someone who is new to modded Minecraft to start out. Not only is it easy to install but it also lets them pick and play popular mod packs and mods. It allows for multiple instances of Minecraft so you can try out any combination of mods you want.
I often find myself replying to posts with a link to the download for the curse launcher, but I felt like I could do more then that. So I am making this post and will link people here from now on in hopes of helping out those who simply want to install mods and play Minecraft and not have to go through with the head aches or frustration of trying to manually download and install everything.
I feel as though I should also warn everyone that there are websites who prey on new players and players with little knowledge to get them to download malicious programs or stolen software or out dated mods claiming to be new. Click here to read more about sites like this. Not only do sites like this have the potential to cause harm to your PC they also will make the whole modding process a lot more frustrating then it has to be. Always make sure if you are downloading a mod, to download it from the Official Mod Authors site or a Trusted and Safe site such as Curse.com. Curse is a very well know gaming website hosting mods for a ton of different games. They are also the company that hosts this and many other forums for games.
I will also point out that I am not in anyway saying this is the "best or only" way of installing mods. I am simply trying to instruct people from my own personal experience "I have manually installed mods into my jar, installed forge many times, and used many different launchers" on the easiest way I have found to quickly get set up and start playing modded Minecraft.
Now that that is all out of the way... Lets begin.
Once the download is compleat open up the installer and click on Install. If a User Account Control window pops up click Yes.
When the install is finished click on Launch Curse.
You can then login if you have a Curse account or you can Register a new one. "Make sure to use your Curse login not your Minecraft login"
Most computers will already have DirectX installed, but if a window pops up that says you are missing DirectX Components Click the Spoiler
If this window pops up just click the Repair button and it will begin the DirectX install.
The install should finish on its own but you may have to click Yes to a User Account Control window like you did for the Curse Installation.
When the Install is finished click Done.
Now we have installed Curse Voice and logged in we just need to turn on the Minecraft Plugin for it. At the top of the window Click on Curse this will drop down a menu and then Click on Settings.
Then on the Left hand side Click on Plugins then Click the Red "X" box to Enable the Minecraft Plugin it should turn into a green check mark.
Then Click on Save and you should now have Minecraft up top next to the Home Button.
Click on the Minecraft Button and we can finish installing the plugin by Clicking on Install.
Great Job! You now have installed the launcher and can start to use it.
Click here to see how to download a Mod Pack
You can click on the Brows All Mod packs or FTB Mod packs to check out some Amazing packs that are premade with tons of great mods.
Trying out new packs is always fun for me. You can Search for a Pack if you already know of one you want to play like maybe a LiLRichy Mod Pack! Once you find a pack you like click on Install and it will download and install that mod pack for you and Create a New Icon for it on the Main Minecraft Screen then you just have to Hit play to play your new pack.
Click here if you just want to install some mods
To install mods we first have to make a Custom Profile or Instance of the Game, you can have as many of these Profiles as you want, so feel free to try out different combinations of mods. That's one of the fun parts of Modded Minecraft. Click on Custom Profile above were it says Install Modpack.
Then you will need to Name your Profile and also pick the Version of Minecraft you want to run. Right now most mods are made for 1.7.10 but more mods are updating to 1.8. I would still recommend playing 1.7.10 though because it has more mods and most of those mods have there bugs worked out so you will have less problems then if you are to play a 1.8 version. You can also pick the version of Forge to install although you should probably just leave it as is unless you need to install a particular version for some reason. The launcher will automatically pick the latest version of Forge for the version of Minecraft you have selected. Once you have everything set you can Click OK and it will make a new Icon on your Minecraft Screen with what ever you named the pack.
Now you can Click Play right away but this is just vanilla Minecraft with Forge installed. Click above the word play on the Icon itself to open up the Mod List Page for that Profile.
Now you can click the Get more content or get mods buttons to start adding your mods to your profile.
You can browse through the list of Mods and then just click on Install to add the mod.
Or you can search for a Mod like a LiLRichy mod and install it that way.
You can see a list of your mods on the Profile page and you can also turn them on or off by clicking the green check box. This is really useful if a mod is causing problems.
Now that we have our Mods installed its time to try them out and play the game. Click on Play that the top to Launch the Minecraft Launcher.
The first time you launch a new profile or mod pack it will need to download Minecraft and install it this only takes a second or two and you don't have to do anything besides wait for it to finish.
Once that is done the Official Minecraft Launcher comes up just like if you were playing Vanilla Minecraft. The first time you run this Launcher you will have to Log in to Minecraft.
Once you have done that you can see your username on the bottom right side then you are all set to play, you can also see that the profile that is selected on the bottom left side is The modpack you clicked play on in the curse launcher. Now just hit Play and Have Fun.
I hope this Tutorial was helpful and I will try to keep it updated if anything should change in this process. There are many more features in the Curse launcher that is beyond the scope of this tutorial but if you want to learn more check out the Spotlight from Direwolf20, its a little bit outdated now but it does show a lot of the main features of the launcher.
Im not sure if this is a problem for anyoje else, but i was having trouble where no modpacks would load up for me even when i tried downloading. I read that if i went into the files and deleted the Minecraft exe there that it would fix that. I deleted it but now when i try to download it again through Curse, it just keeps on loading and loading and doesnt go on from there. Ive waited hours and nothing. Any help please?
