Okay, I am playing FTB Infinity, but this should apply to any larger pack. When I allocate 4GB of RAM, If I raise my render distance beyond 2, my fps drops to unplayable levels, so I raised my RAM to 6GB. This allowed me to run a render distance of 4. I don't mind the shorter render distance, but my problem is that with 4 GB allocated, Ram usage is always at 3.5GB, with 6GB of ram, it stays at 5.5, and with 8 GB, it is always at 7.5. How much RAM does this pack need? I've read from several places that more than 4GB is bad for Java, but I see servers running more.
Using Task manager for RAM usage. Minecraft's debug screen is horribly inaccurate
Both CPU and GPU Usage are reasonable. (Around 50-60%)
I forgot to mention that with all 3 of those ram allocations, I get the occasional lag spike accompanied by the console giving the "running xxx miliseconds behind... Skipping xxx Ticks".

As already said, servers need more due to the amount of players on the server, among other things. Clients rarely need more than 4GB at most. 2GB will even suffice in a lot of situations. Your problem is very likely not RAM related, open Minecraft back up and hit F3 in-game, then see what the memory usage is. That's the amount of memory the game is actually using (versus how much the game has been allocated), for me with about 250 ish mods it sits at 1GB - 2GB.
On top of that, did you mean the AMD A10 6800K? Doing a quick Google search showed there is no FX 6800K. If you did mean the A10, that's an APU, so check to make sure the game is actually running on your 740 and not the APU's GPU (look online for a tutorial on how to do this).. Otherwise, keep in mind that world generation is very hard on your CPU, so if you just got into a world and are experiencing lag, hit F3 and wait for chunk activity to reach 0 or near 0.

My mistake on the CPU. It is an A10. (Been looking at too much stuff lately and got confused.) And yes it is running on the 740. I have a desktop and the monitor is plugged into the GPU. I also have integrated graphics disabled in the bios. As for the RAM usage, it peaked at 2.5GB when loading chunks.
Any idea on what causes the occasional lag spike accompanied by the ticks being skipped?
[22:24:32] [Server thread/WARN]: Can't keep up! Did the system time change, or is the server overloaded? Running 2071ms behind, skipping 41 tick(s)
What is my best tool to measure tickrate/time? the only one I know of is /cofh tps.

I have no idea how I ever played Vanilla.
Servers use more RAM because they are multi-player. Single player clients don't. 4GB should be sufficient.
