I'm new to modding, and I'd rather not mess up my game by trying to do something that I'm not even sure is possible, so my question is, is it possible to add varying mob skins? for example, horses have several different skins with different designs, is it possible to mod the game to make zombies spawn naturally with different skins like that? If so, could you please explain how I'd do that. Thank you
This is done not by a mod but by the resource/texture pack being used, most come with multiple skins for all vanilla mobs. Simply find a pack you like the look of and drop it into the resource pack file in your Minecraft folder.
To do that you'll have to create your own texture pack and create skins for the mobs or items you'd like to change, the rest will stay as default. Sadly I can't offer any better advice as I've never felt the need to make my own. I recommend googling tutorials and guides, from what I here it's not difficult.

Okay thank you, that helps, but how do I personally add skins/textures if i don't like what a resource pack has to offer?
