If you really want an honest opinion, go scan the file with an anti-virus program. That is basically what they were made for. For the basics (though not the best results), on Windows, go run a default anti-virus program called Windows Defender and scan your computer once you have installed Legend of Notch.
If you get your mods off these forums or Curse you should be safe as their monitored to insure safety. The virus threat comes when you download from third party sites. Even with an antivirus program you should steer clear of these sites as they are also known to repost mods without the authors permission in hope of stealing revenue and posting mods for Minecraft versions that they don't support.
