I am a noob with mods and have no idea what's good, bad or just straight pointless thus I wanted to ask what would be
a few good mods that you would suggest for first-timers? I have a few small standards that are sacraficeable if there are
other mods that shine above the rest.
My interests include ores, hostile mobs but not killer OP ones, animals, is Mo' animals still good? realistic or better shaders
and graphics like reflective water, somewhat wacky dimensions that are actually fun to explore and finally any sort of
weather mod that is at least decent.
The only guidelines I have are that they would hopefully be combineable and that they receive regular updates and keep
up with the latest version of minecraft. Any suggestions are welcome however. I am mainly looking for about 10 mods
so if there are similar mods that offer different stuff those will be considered as well.
For shaders, how good is your computer? You need a pretty decently powered PC with a dedicated graphics card to run shaders smoothly without problems. Even then shaders are known to not play nice with mods and outside of the overworld, shaders are designed for cinematic use, making the game look pretty in the overworld and they tend to bug out in the Nether and End, custom dimensions are a bit finicky.

I'm gonna be going for a Ironcore Minion Ultra. I have no clue as to what the graphics are like or what any of it means still.
From what I hear it is a good gaming pc and doesn't use Intel which I guess is good.
This one? If so, it's got pretty good graphics for the price, a GTX 960. You could probably get it lower if you build it yourself rather than buy prebuilt, but for that price that's pretty good.

For just ores the best choice is Metallurgy 4, with over 50 new ores, dozens of alloys, tools and armor it easily offers the best selection of metals.
As for hard mobs Lycanites Mobs is, IMO, the best. I won't try to describe it as I wouldn't do it justice, just take a look at the site and I'm sure you'll be impressed.
The Localized Weather mod is the only modern weather mod I know of, by modern I mean for 1.7. It brings in blowing winds that can move snow and rain, biome specific storms, and snow buildup among other things.
I don't recommend using shaders with many mods. since there is a huge graphic haul due to it, rendering the game may crash it. trust me, it's happened to me before.

What are your PC specs. While GLSL isn't always intensive, SEUS is.

That'd be the one! I still have no desire to attempt to build a computer because I just don't understand any of it at all.
But to get back to the mod question, one of the main things I want is a good weather mod, shaders aren't entirely important
but nevertheless would be nice. The only other thing is some new hostile mobs that offer a challenge and ores, lots of ores.
You don't need to know everything about computers to build computers. Building a PC is just like building something with Lego, buy the parts and click them into the right slots. There's countless tutorials online for building all kinds of computers.

Specs? And for me it doesn't crash it, the game wouldn't crash because of how much shaders lowers FPS. But the reason why you shouldn't use it with mods is shaders are not designed to be ran alongside mods, so you could have unexpected issues, for instance a lot of Thaumcraft's custom rendering breaks with shaders (nodes become fully opaque, the obelisks' star field render (the custom render which looks like stars floating in space) breaks and turns completely white, etc).

yeah, thats what grimallq told me. i did a pretty bad job of saying what he had said. in summary, mods include things that can't be rendered they way they are forced to by shaders.

Well rendering problems isn't exactly equal to crashing now is it? As I said, the only issue I've had with shaders on a relatively heavily modded game (130-140 mods) is some rendering problems with mods, no crashes.

Awkward rendering, and I'm running a GT 840M, a pretty bad card compared to other cards. I've never gotten crashes due to failed rendering.

Back to the mods for the things you are asking about i would recommend Tinkers Construct and Twilight Forest, then depending on the version you are in project zulu. If you are new to mods then i would recommend Trying some pre built packs from one of the launchers. personally i lie to use the technic launcher but ATLauncher and the FTB Launcher are pretty good. for packs my personal favorites are:
- Hexxit on Technic Launcher
- TPPI on Technic Launcher or FTB Launcher
- ModSauce on ATLauncher
Hope I have helped a little... Don't forget to have some fun and Happy Crafting.
well... I guess I could try to attemp to fail at building a computer. Never was very good with building stuff, that is a skill that
continues to elude me. But a few of the mods mentioned do sound interesting and I'll be happy to give them a go. Thank you
@reamblinman847 for all the suggests!
As jcm has said, building a PC isn't too hard, it's literally like putting Lego bricks together, just don't do what I did and plug part of the motherboard cable into the ATX12V connector(Fortunately nothing was fried as the motherboard couldn't power up, due to not having its whole power connector plugged in). Also, make sure to have the little speaker plugged in, beep codes are very useful for diagnosis(The motherboard manual should tell you what they mean or you could google beep codes for your BIOS). I used the guide here when building mine.

Tinkers Construct's a great choice for weapons and tools and happens to work fantastically with Metallurgy. You need to install the mod Extra TiC for compatibility between the two but all Metallurgy metals can be used for Tinkers' tools and many add special effects such as poison, wither, and life steal.

Awesome! Seems like I got a few real good hits on mods and some extra insight/positivity to building the machine.
Lord help us, I'll probably be the poor soul that lets them loose on humanity by accident.
Thank you to each ofyou for feedback and positive comments!!
