I'm pretty experienced with computers, but I am running out of options when it comes to playing Minecraft.
Every literal 5 minutes, I receive an error and Minecraft closes, making Minecraft a very hard game to play, as it takes three minutes to start up. It takes three minutes to start because of the mods I have. (this error happens in Vanilla too) I run MC 1.7.10
I have a very nice home built computer..
I am going to be as descriptive as possible, here's what I play MC with.
I run MC with Fancy graphics, FOV normal, 2 Mipmap levels, No VSYNC, 3D anaglyph, or Advanced OPENGL, I also have Smooth lighting on maximum, View bobbing on, and anisotropic filtering off.
The specs are as follows:
4GB NVIDIA GTX 770
16 GB of RAM (and yes, I do allocate 6 GB to Minecraft through the JVM arguments)
AMD FX8350 CPU
750 Watt PSU
ASUS M5A967 motherboard
I have the latest NVIDIA driver.
Attached is the separate window that opens when it crashes, and there is no crash report other than that window.
Again, it is error code 8, and it is an NVIDIA crash.
OpenGL is not always the best option on the newest cards. I'd start MC and under video settings, turn it off entirely before you enter the game.
With older video cards and integrated ones, it shifts a bit of the burden from the gpu onto the cpu, which typically isn't as badly outdated as the video card. You don't really have that issue, and openGL might not give you any performance boost, and in fact might be worse with it on. Something to test yourself.

what
I assume you mean the "advanced OpenGL" setting, which is a weird way of saying "occlude hidden faces"? You can't turn off OpenGL, it's what the Minecraft graphics run on. No openGL = no Minecraft graphics
actually you can turn it off and still play just fine
No, you cannot turn OpenGL off. You can turn "Advanced OpenGL" off. They are two completely different things.
"Advanced OpenGL" is exactly what MamiyaOtaru told you it is. It stops hidden faces from being rendered to reduce the load on your graphics processor.
"OpenGL" is not something that can be turned off. It is the graphics engine that Minecraft uses to render to your display. Without OpenGL, Minecraft would be a black window. Not even that. The application "tells" OpenGL what to render on the screen, OpenGL "tells" your graphics driver, and the graphics driver "tells" your graphics processor.
As for your problem, OP, I was able to solve it by enabling "Advanced OpenGL" in the video settings.
So yes. i have the same problem.. I noticed few things about my GPU.. its 580GTX with latest version of driver.. and i still get the Error or crashing. with the setting you already know i have settled.
There is one more thing that you may want to watch your fps.. and see how it behave.. when i joined the server, i got 58fps at first for a while.. when it was finishing loading.. its still at 58fps and about 3 minutes or more passed.. it increased to 110fps.. thats when i crashed.. with OpenGL error. I find it strange.. because it seems that fps may be related to the video card because openGL is using the video card to rendering the minecraft to be display on the monitor. I am still trying to figure it out the causes.. it all started on second week of April.
So, 6 months of crashing and still no fix? Has anyone figured out a workaround yet? I've tried rolling back nVidia driver, re-installing everything including windows, and disabling everything shy of the video card itself.
Ok, I had to make an account to post this. I couldn't find a comprehensive fix online for this, but I seem to have fixed it.
When it crashes (at least for me), it shows a "CMS Incremental Error" in the Minecraft game output. To fix this, click edit profile, click the JVM Arguments checkbox, and delete "-XX: +CMSIncrementalMode". Save the profile and you should be done.
This issue / bug is directly linked to Nvidia Cards of all model types. It happens with ALL DRIVER versions. It comes up for a bit then goes away. Nvidia says its an issue with Minecraft and NOT their drivers but the issue ONLY AFFECTS Nvidia cards.
Nvidia has NO PLANS to address the OpenGl has detected a problem with your display driver" bug and recommends that people having this issue go pound sand. No joke.
Reports say that you can help reduce the issue by NOT running youtube or netflix in the back ground as it could be related to FLASH drivers. I don't know about this but it could well be.
Uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for your Nvidia card has NO discernible effect on this bug. Even if you do a complete driver wipe manually and then a clean install you wills see get the crash. I know, I build a brand new system trying to trouble should this issue and the bug didn't go away.
What I find odd is that it was an issue for a while, then went away, only to come back. I don't get that so the best I can conclude is that its something in the Driver that was removed and then added back in. Or perhaps, it could just be FLASH video drivers as some believe.
As far as can tell its not a power management issue. It is not a TPN (Microsoft issue.) (That issue was related to the 570 card and its funky bios.)
Since Nvidia claims it's a bug with Minecraft, and Mojang(MS) are silent on the issue, we won't see it resovled. The solution, use AMD card for playing MC.
I'm having this problem too. But it not only crashes NIVIDA, but because it does that, it causes JAVA to crash right after.
I'm using Windows 8.1.
If its really on NIVIDA, you'd think they would fix the issue but nooooo, they just wanna blame Minecraft and Mojang.
If I had the money, I'd try getting that AMD card mentioned.

I have this same issue and my Open GL is always off. So this is clearly not the problem
I figured out that you need it on in order to not crash with the new graphics cards..

Regardless on or off I still crash so this isn't the issue either. I have contacted NVidia also

I'm in the same boat. Every other game works perfectly fine. Running vanilla 1.8.4, but it seemed to randomly start yesterday.

Go back to a previous driver version that did work without these crashes and download and install that driver instead.
.... see above posts about you obviously having no clue....
rather than being a snide little brat and being rude, how about actually trying it? I did it and it solved my problem. Never happened since.
Thank you
but I can't fix as your solution.

MC v1.5 - Win 7 SP1 64 bit - Intel I5 6970k - Gigabyte Z97X-UD5H-BK
16 Gigs Corsair Vengeance DDR3 - EVGA GTX 770 - Seagate SSD (240 Gig)
What worked for me - turn Advanced OpenGL to 'on'
Stable for a over a week now with Nvidia driver 358.50 and Java 1.8.0_65
What didn't work -
Fresh mod pack install
Fresh GPU driver
Fresh Java
No Flash stuff in the background
Black chickens and tea leaves
