I've been noticing a problem with my computer. I had an old computer that could BARELY handle modpacks. Most of them ,at least. This christmas, I got a better computer, with 6 gigs of Ram, and Minecraft, with mods, seems to run even WORSE. I've tried to bump the Ram allocation up more and more, stopping at 3 gigs, but I see no difference. This computer has Windows 8.1, and I have the final version of Java 7 installed, both 32- and 64-bit. Can I have some help, please?
As grimallq said, probably CPU. As far as I know Minecraft is only RAM intensive when it comes to detailed rendering (i.e. textures and shaders; even 4GB will suffice). CPU handles the internal operations like block updates, server ticking, and general math. CPU here is a much bigger deal than RAM.
Right click on 'My Computer', select 'Properties', then post the processor specs. You can also use Task Manager when you are playing the game to see how much of the processor is being used by Minecraft.
Also, get rid of 32-bit Java. It can cause problems having multiple Java versions, especially when using both a 32-bit and 64-bit on a 64-bit OS. Use only one 64-bit Java version at a time.
Okay, I'll do away with 32-bit Java, then. As for my processor, I have an AMD A8-6410 APU with AMD Radeon R5 Graphics. It's also 2 Gigahertz. I KNOW that this is better than my old computer, which had a processor that was over seven years old. And that computer ran Minecraft better.
That processor should be fine. I have a 1.3 GHz AMD but I can reach 15-20 FPS with 151 mods (I'm thinking you don't use that much), so I imagine 2 GHz would do better. As far as my knowledge goes, the problem isn't likely there then; grimallq probably knows if that'll have any impact. He's a better troubleshooter than me. : P
In that case, it could be the mods since often the more popular modpacks have something in them that eats up RAM/CPU. Would you mind listing off the modpack(s) and whatever lone mods you have?
I'm aware of Java eating CPU - I can't even have the launcher in the background when playing - but I've made it work with my laptop with mods like Ender IO, Buildcraft, TE, Biomes O' Plenty, etc. I'd figure a 2.0 would do even better.
The thing is he states MC is hitting 5-7 FPS and did better on his previous, older computer, so I'm thinking there are mods, like Opis or JourneyMap since they are popular in modpacks, that are putting stress too much stress on the CPU. I'm just spitballing what I personally know. : P
I use mapwriter and I don't have a problem with it. My guess is that it doesn't check blocks near as much as other map mods, and it's map is simply a png file. And I figured as much with the tech mods, considering all the math and block checking it has to do per tick. I don't know how much I can squeeze if I left tech mods behind (not willing to find out either).
Hopefully he can give a list or a modpack, and some of those mods happen to be the problem. Else, I wouldn't know of anything else to suggest.
Also Punisher, I forgot to mention: If you are using any texture packs above 64x64 by any chance, be sure to post it. I reckon 3 gigs might be having trouble pushing anything above 128x128 or higher.
Alright. The modpacks I'm trying to run are Hypercubed^4, Hermitcraft Modsauce, Tolkiencraft 2, along with a few others that escape me. I don't use any resource packs, so I doubt that's a problem.
Ok. I'm going to name off what I know know can hinder the game when it first starts. I'll be updating this as I look into other mods.
Opis (ModSauce): Huge CPU hog. This is something you don't want with only 2 GHz.
Hats (Modsauce): Another CPU hog. I would suggest removing this too.
Biomes O' Plenty, Natura (Modsauce): Only slow when generating new chunks and initial loading.
Alongside those, any mods that change the AI of mobs can severely impact it too. Watch this post for updates on others, but in the meantime remove those.
Hm. I see. I hope you can get more information. Also, I've learned that, despite this computer being a "gaming laptop", its processor is WORSE than the 7-year-old one I had. The old computer had 2.53 gigahertz. This one only has 2, even. I hope I can upgrade it, but knowing how computer companies are with their BRILLIANT idea of soldering graphics cards onto motherboards and such, that might not be likely.
EDIT: I tried a modpack with 27 mods. Couldn't break 4 FPS, and I had everything set to minimum, and had Optifine set to multicore. I have an AMD A8-6410 APU with AMD Radeon r5 graphics processor. It's a quad-core.
Really? I thought I read up that Java heavily relies on RAM. How do I check my CPU's specs, again?
