I've got a copper ingot, and I'm on my second flint axe, but the gravel grinding is seriously a pain. Nice having a bed and a chest finally though
Edit: And does sugar cane grow at all? If it doesn't it really should. If it's just super slow that's fine. But right now chocolate is the only way I'm staying alive.

I take it you're in a jungle biome. Sugar cane will grow there fine but crops grow more slowly in this mod. Let's have a screenshot of your hideout! This is exciting
How many days did you spend collecting those nuggets?
OT: 4 days and only 1 copper nugget... and a lot of gravel. How durable is a flint axe?

This is the most beautiful moment of my Mincrafting history. And I've been playing minecraft since the days before pistons. Here it is, in all it's glory. A single copper pickaxe (and my beloved hole in a wall).
Congratulations! It's a great feeling when you finally get that first pickaxe. Welcome to the Bronze Age.
That's a nice base of operations you got there; compact and functional with a door to keep the riff-raff out.
I got ten uses out of my flint axe, or rather ten logs, but if you craft multiple ones together you can get a few extra uses. And it took a looong time to get all 27 of those precious nuggets. I pretty much collected gravel from nearby swamps and picked up any sugar cane I could find. Then I brought it all back to my cave and dug gravel during the nights. I had a little cocoa farm, which lets you make chocolate as long as you have sugar, and chocolate fills hunger just as good as raw meat. Once you get the pickaxe though things move along quite nicely. Also, invest in a few wooden bowls, mushroom soup will save your life. And you can get milk from the occasional cow, but crafting the cheese takes a good while. Which is why its probably better to craft it in bulk.

That's the better, more practical answer.
Flint hatchets have 300 durability and flint axes 1200. A log block decreases tool durability by 120, so the math works out to 3 logs for the hatchet and 10 for the axe.
My new shiny iron pick, and my new digs. Also nice having a silver sword to take down zombies. I relocated to another cave that was close to some new resources. Also it's a temporary place while I build up materials to eventually construct my permanent home.

Whoa, that's a nice grip of ingots...are you saving up for an anvil?
Well if it's as expensive as a regular anvil with the three blocks and such no way. I don't have nearly enough hardware I'd rather put them to use by making some armor. But I don't know if an anvil would be much use anyways until I get an enchanted weapon, given that it just repairs it nugget by nugget. Unless there's a bonus of any sort when repaired with an anvil?

It's just an inexpensive way of repairing your metal tools and armor, once the large initial investment of the anvil is paid. Just know that anvils only repair items that are made of an equal or lesser metal, so a copper anvil cannot be used to repair something made of iron.
So I discovered that swimming is very kind to your hunger. VERY kind. From full hunger you can swim around through the night and not need to eat at all. I hope I didn't just screw myself by revealing this knowledge.
Anyway, I began on the border of a desert, jungle and taiga (I think) biome. Ran around the first day gathering seeds to keep myself from starving until I found a couple chickens. I hit the jungle and gathered some cocoa and sugar cane. Hit the desert for some sand, made a couple sandstone blocks and kept the rest as sand. At night I climbed a tree and hid out, crafting and eating chocolate. Day two began with me jumping out of the tree and collecting drops from fallen undead. I also discovered the horror that is the wood spider. DEAD.
Luckily I found my stuff quickly and sprinted away from the spider until I was safe. I don't like those...I explored the taiga more to find more food. HERD OF COWS! Killing spree ensued. Pumpkin patch right next to them. Nightfall I took to the water and made that discovery I mentioned earlier.
I swam through the night and in the morning came across an island. Small enough to where I would not have to worry about spawn at night. It had a tree so I broke leaves until I had two sticks then took to the water and continued heading east. I swam for two days, stopping at a few islands here and there to collect sand or look for gravel. I eventually came across a Mushroom island - SCORE! I killed Mooshrooms with reckless abandon and collected dozens of brown mushrooms. The large ones sheltered me from rain a couple times.
I found gravel on the mushroom isle as well. A nearby island with a tree was about a 3-4min swim west. Nice location. With the safety of the Mooshroom island (no hostile mobs spawn here) I was able to build up ample food supply, get enough gravel for some tools and get resources together towards a pickaxe. That's where I am now. I don't know that I have enough gravel on my island to get copper for a pick. Here's to hoping though. I will also use my sand stockpile to put a furnace together and light up a cave on the island I found.
This mod is awesome. Only one death in about 10+ game days so far and I feel like I'm finally being challenged by Minecraft.

Try harvesting leaf blocks to get some sticks. It is rare to find them on the ground (it occurs when leaf blocks are broken during chunk generation).
Keep up the good fight
I think spiders get more kills than any other mob by a landslide.
The first person to post a screenshot of their pickaxe is going to have major bragging rights.

Flint axes have four times the durability of flint hatchets. Also it would take more sticks to make the hatchets, so the savings is considerable.

And the bit about swimming leagues to a mooshroom island was very...informative
