Me and 2 friends have recently started playing minecraft on my server(from the minecraft page), and I was thinking of adding a few mods to enhance our gameplay, however I have no idea on how to do so. I have modded single player games before (editing the .jar file to use Optifine, and using a loader for mo creatures), but have never done so with a server. Essentially want I want to ask is this:
How do I go about adding mods to my server? (The ones I look to add are Twilight Forest & The Aether when released later this month)
Will my friends have to also download/install the mods, or not? (I've read stuff about bukkit and plugins, but if someone could clear this up it would be highly appreciated.)
And for the big one: One of the two friends uses a Mac. Will he still be able to use mods as well?
I'm fairly new to the whole multiplayer aspect to minecraft, for I haven't had many close friends to play with until now. I would much rather get answers from knowledgable forum users than have to go through the stress of google searching (which i've been trying with not much sucess). Again any help is appreciated
Adding mods to a server can be a little bit more tricky than SSP. Make sure the mods that you want have multiplayer versions available. Then, follow their respective tutorials on their pages. Your friends and you will have to download and install the SSP version of the mod(s) on their Minecraft game.
For the Mac question, there's no special Mac rule for mods, all "should" work on mac, though depending on the mods and model of computer, they may lag a bit more. (Tested on my spare Mac).
For forge mods it's actually pretty easy. Download the minecraftserver.jar instead of the .exe from minecraft.net, add forge universal too it as you would if it was your minecraft.jar and run it, then just drag and drop into the newly generated mods folder.
