i started this topic because i think its time i start putting more effort into recruiting modders for my mod idea. in a spoiler below i will have the opening post from the main topic quoted. dont take my word when i say this is a great mod idea, read through it carefully and make a decision on your own.
*some programers have volunteered so wish them luck!* Fantastic fish mod
INTRODUCTION:
the goal of this mod is to implement a new fishing system and a few mobs. the way the new fishing system will work wont remove the original system, but will add onto it. first off the mod adds in fish mobs which is what you catch with a fishing rod. for the sake of avoiding editing the base files we'll be adding a new rod for the purpose of catching these fish that is crafted using the vanilla rod. so we'll start off with the basics.
THE BASICS:
the fish are able to detect a floating lure in the water when its within a spacific radius and height depending on the type of fish, and will slowly swim towards it and once they get close enough they dart at it and get "hooked". once they're hooked all other fish will avoid the lure and hooked fish and flee from it. the hooked fish will start to berzerk and swim around erratically like a peaceful mob that has been attacked. to "catch" the fish once its hooked simply right click to pull it on land.after a set time of being hooked, depending on the fish, a fish will start to swim downwards making it harder to pull out of the water. once its on land it will begin to flop around on its side like a real fish bouncing around until it is killed or lands back into the water. to get the fish in item form you have 2 options. you can beat it to death while its on land, or left click it with a "net" which will despawn the fish and give you the fish's drop. this means chasing down fish with the net is a valid fishing method assuming you can get close enough. fish also avoids players keeping their distance by darting extra quick, so the player can't simply swim after them and hit them with a sword.
LESS THAN BASIC:
each type of fish can spawn in 6 different sizes. tiny(1/4 block length), small(1/3 block length), medium(1 block length), big(1&1/2 block lengths), large(2 block lengths), and legendary(3 block lengths). each size of fish will drop a fish item that is non-stackable, and is named according to its size and type of fish. all fish item's item sprite is determined by the type of fish, not size. this fish item can be crafted into"raw fish meat", depending on the size of the fish it will make a specific amount of "raw fish meat". tiny=1, small=2, medium=3, big=4, large=5, legendary=10. the "raw fish meat" is stack-able and cookable. you can also take the fish item and cook it. when you cook the fish it will become an amount of "Cooked fish meat" depending on the fish size.
SPAWNING:
each type of fish has specific spawning conditions that varies from fish to fish. (biome, water depth, etc) however there are some universal traits on spawning that all fish share. they all spawn and despawn like squids so your world can never run out of fish. the size of the fish that spawns depends on the depth of the water its in. one water block depth can only spawn tiny, and small fishes. 2-3 blocks deep spawn small and medium sized fish. 4-5 depth can spawn medium and big fish, and 6-9 block depth can spawn big fish and rarely large fish. after 9 blocks depth large fish become more common and all other fish sizes can also spawn at that depth. at 15 water blocks depth and lower is the only place legendary sized fish can spawn, but all other fish sizes can spawn there also which means finding a legendary fish wont be so simple.
ITEMS LIST:
the "fish" items will be organized under the fish's information.
also crafting recipes are not listed for some items because i haven't decided how they should be made, or i don't think they should be craft-abel.
fishing pole with bait:
this fishing rod works just like the vanilla rod, except it's lure can attract and catch fish mobs. it is crafted in a shapeless recipe using the vanilla rod and spider eye, red mushroom, or feather.
aquarium water:(maybe?)
this is a new type of water that prevents mobs and other stuff from despawning that would normally despawn. the point of adding this would allow players to create an aquarium without worrying about their fish despawning. it would also prevent squids, and mobs from other mods from despawning also. still not sure if this idea would really work or not, but we'll try.
scuba mask:
increases duration of breath underwater by 5 seconds, and makes water clearer when underwater during daytime.
air tank:
increases the breath under water duration by 2 minutes.
wet suit:
increases the speed the player moves in water forwards backwards and side to side.
flippers:
allows player to swim upwards faster.
harpoon:
does as much damage as an iron axe when used to melee, and does 2 hearts of damage on impact when thrown. when pulled out with the rope it does 5 hearts of damage. has low durability, and can get bow and sword enchantments.
blaze fishing pole:
can fish in lava, casts twice as far as the vanilla rod, and the lure sinks lower in the water before surfacing to attract the deeper fish. crafted from a shapeless recipe using a blaze rod, quartz, string, and either the fishing pole with bait, or the vanilla rod.
fishing boat:
this boat is 3 blocks long and 2 blocks wide. unlike the vanilla boat, it is very hard to push around, and when pushed around doesn't re-orient itself. its possible to stand on it without it moving, and when you exit it, you're standing on it. the crane and net are operated by first right clicking and holding the crank. the longer you hold the crank the lower it lower the net into the water. each layer of the water depth will cause the ships bell to ding once as it lowers the net. the net spreads out and becomes much larger when you finish lowering it. any fish entity or squid that touches the net will become trapped in it. the net can hold up to 9 fishes/squid, and once the net is full a bell will ring on the boat. to raise the net back up just click right the crank again and it will rise slowly back up to the side of your boat and shrink back to its original size and catching fish on its way up if it isn't full. while it hangs over the side of the boat you right click the net to access a menu to collect the drops of the mobs. if a fish has an additional drop besides the fish item it cannot be collected, and squids can only drop one ink when caught like this. once the player exits the menu any fish he/or she did not collect drops from will be dropped out of the net and released while the fish they did collect from despawn. once the net has been emptied the crane will return to its default state until lowered again.
lobster pot:
the lobster pot consists of 2 main parts. the floating log, and the cage. lobster pots can only placed in water that is at least 3 blocks deep. by default the log and the cage are a single entity that are right next to each other. they float on the surface of the water in this state. but when you right click the log they become separate entities and the cage drops to the bottom of the water while the log continues to float while a piece of string still connects them. lobsters and crayfish are attracted to the lobster pot cage when its at the bottom of the water. when a lobster or crayfish wanders close enough to the cage it will become captured. the cage can only capture up to 9 slots worth of lobsters and crayfish. to bring the cage back to to the surface and make the log and the cage a single entity again the player must right click the log again. to access the HUD for collecting the cages catch you right click the cage instead of the log.
fishing net:
as explained previously the net despawns fish, crayfish, and lobsters and then gives the player the item drop. the net DOES NOT have infinite durability, and takes extra damage from crayfish, and breaks when used to catch a lobster.
Decoy fish:
the decoy fish is a fake wooden fish that you can place in water that will float sorta like a boat. it comes in as many sizes as there are sizes of fish. what it actually does attract fishes that are larger than it, and scares away fish that are smaller. when first crafted its size is "tiny" and it is made larger by surrounding it with wooden planks. you can keep upgrading it by repeating the recipe with decoy fish you get from crafting.
creeper fish?:
the creeper fish is actually a weapon, not really a hostile mob. they're stack-able and function as a water based projectile that explodes on contact. the creeper fish will swim directly at anything you point them at and explode near it. if you target a moving entity it will track after it. if the entity or block is destroyed before the creeperfish gets there then it will explode at its last known location. but to sum it up in one word, its a torpedo. its crafted by placing a fish in the center of a crafting bench and surrounding it with gunpowder.
sea shell:
???
Framed fish:
this is a place-able decorative item that mounts a fish on a wall. it has as many variants as their is for fish. there's mounted fishes for each size and type so that you can show off your rare catches. is only place able on walls and the larger mounted fish can only be placed on walls big enough. it is crafted in a shapeless recipe with a fish item drop and an item frame. this item is more of an idea than an actual planned feature though.
FISH TYPES:
Fishy(gray,blue,red,green,yellow)
fishy are the basic and most common fish in this mod. they can spawn just about anywhere with few exceptions. the gray and blue fishy spawn in every overworld biome and at every depth while the green fishy is exclusive to swamp biomes. the red spawns in jungles, and the yellow spawns in the ocean biome. they all drop a trout when killed that corresponds with the size of the fish.
cavefish
the cave fish cannot spawn in the ocean biome and spawns at any Y depth below 40. they glow in the dark and are slightly transparent. finding a big one is very difficult.
spotted bottom feeder
ignores lures, caught with net and harpoon
anglerfish
spawns in ocean, generally ignores lures because it spawns so deep. using harpoon is the most practical method of catching.
Iron fish
drops 2-4 iron ingots, spawns in ocean below water depth 9, low spawn rate to make sorta rare
gilded fish(fish of gold)
drops 2-4 gold ingots. eats squids, spawns in ocean below water depth 9.
diamond fish
drops 2-4 diamonds. spawns in ocean below water depth 9. super low spawn rate to make it extremely rare
emerald fish
drops 2-4 emeralds. spawns in ocean below water depth 9. super low spawn rate to make it extremely rare
[textures WIP]
salmon
spawns in rivers, any water depth
tuna
spawns in ocean, water depth 5 and below
mossybackbottomfeeder
spawns in swamp in at least water depth 3, ignores lures.
ender fish
flies, passes though solid blocks, spawns in The End below Y 64 depth, hurt by water, spawns at random size. emits the endermen particles when fazing through blocks.
nether spineback
spawns in lava in nether, sets fires when flopping on land. obviously fire proof and hurt by water. also drops fire charges and or blaze powder. caught with the blaze fishing pole.
fancy fungus fishy
spawns near mushroom biomes
[no pictures yet, texture WIP]
quartz fish
flies, only spawn in chunks in nether with a quartz blocks placed in them. stays near quartz block, wanders but not too far. spawns varies size depending on number of quartz blocks in chunk proportional to the water depth spawning that normally determines size of fish.
[picture unavailable]
ancient stone swimmer
only spawns in jungle biomes in water below depth Y 40. drops fish drop and 1-3 decorative stone bricks.
sailfish
ocean biome, neutral towards player. attacks tuna and fishy's, and destroys their fish drop items. only one size, no larger or smaller variations. their fish item drop can be made into 7 "raw fish meat"
OTHER MOBS: lobster
crawls on ocean floor. caught with lobster pots, avoids player, but will attack player if the player damages it. uses up all of the fishing nets durability if caught with net. item form not stack-able. releases all fish in fishing boats net if snagged in fishing boat net.
crayfish
spawns in river biomes. avoids player, uses up more than usual amount of a nets durability to catch. can be caught with lobster pots, item form is stack-able.
clams
spawn at the bottom of ocean biomes. they stay open, but close after they take damage. when closed their damage resistance increases making them hard to crack open. they will drop 1-2 sea shells, which currently have no use...
whale
spawns in ocean, eats squids, item form not stack-able. best hunted with harpoon. makes noises that can only be heard underwater. semi-rare spawn
[model complete, texture WIP]
narwhal
spawns under the ice in the winter biome if the water is at least 6 blocks deep. it breaks ice on contact, and is slightly smaller than the normal whale.
[model complete, texture WIP]
Nether whale
rarely spawn in the lava sea in the nether. drops blaze rods, blaze powder, fire charges, and obsidian. drops normally destroyed in lava. hurt by water and fire proof. will bite blaze fishing pole lures. no item form
[model complete, texture WIP]
Shark
currently the only thing decided about it is that it will spawn only in ocean and be hostile.
pictures of the WIP model can be viewed under the "other stuff"
other stuff: FireRockerzstudios made a video talking about this topic here:
picture of original basic fish model with placeholder textures.
almost all of the different kinds fish use the same model just re-textured. this makes making and animating new fish easier.

POSSIBLE ADDITIONS:
Atlantian ruins on ocean floor(made from quarts)
underwater portal room in atlantian ruins that takes player to boss fight or somthing
zombie/skeleton divers spawning from mob spawners in "sunken ship dungeons"
adding sponge blocks to the bottom of the ocean biome to make coral reefs.
star fish
eels.
more whales?
more multi purposed fish models.
sand swimmer(sand fish)
sand shark.

Looks like a nice idea I'd be happy to help with modelling/texturing, just PM me. Also, I've got contact with a few people with experience in java, I could talk to them also? Although, if we're going to help, I'd have to put this awesome mod onto my server, if that's okay with you ;>
this is a cool mod can you add a submarine to explore under water
the overall purpose of this mod is to improve fishing. a submarine would be cool, but it wouldn't really fit when you have that in mind. anyway im sure someone else is already working on a submarine mod.
I would absolutely LOVE being a model maker / idea maker, I've had many experiences with a modelling program called 'techne' in fact, right now im trying to make a mutant spider model. an i defiantly wont disappear weeks at a time
That good project is one that you hold, I can not help you, I know nothing about creating mods so all I can do is wish you good luck on your project, I hope all goes well and to see and try some day.
I know how to code and would love to help. The things you are adding are a bit out of what i normally do but i can learn what i dont fully know how to do. If you still need more help pm me. I also know a good texturer if you need one. Just pm me if you need help
If you need a coder for mob AI or anything like that I can help. I've got a mod going already, but it's not insanely difficult or time-consuming to code (except for the special-ability enchantments, but there aren't many of those anyway). I'd love to help if you'll have me.

Can you add reef fish as well as different sharks like whites ,hammerheads and bulls.sea turtles would be cool to add.as well as dolphins. Will you be doing any thing to make the ocean biome look better like add sea mounts, deep ocean, trenches, kelp forests, reefs etc. you probably have some of these in mind. I just have been looking for a better minecraft ocean for a while
ok I don't have any experience in making mods but I think I can do most of the things you need I can do textures because I customize texture packs a lot ive started and im still making my texture pack. I can give you ideas like you should also look at ponds and lakes not just oceans put bass and trout and new fishing rods and poles make them customizable you should also make reefs with octopuses in them. So please let me be a part of your team I know lots about fresh water fish. P.S. if your adding boats please make the boats have trolling ability.
