I've made quite a few different adders before. Which I made fast by using 'instant' carry lines with pistons. This does not work this way in real circuits, so I wanted to try make a carry-look-ahead adder. It's a modular design, each doubling costs 2 ticks. I made no effort trying to make it compact, it could be made many times smaller. This 16-bit version takes 9 ticks at most.
Could you please explain to me how a carry look ahead adder works, well more how to build one than how it works.

This is a test setup, my only 'bug' is to find a better way to give current to middle block, or pull it away if i can
Fully Closed Front
Fully Closed Back
Fully Closed Bottom Part
Open (Works as a nice Dock/Dam Concept as well)
I am now testing to move that one away in some way, then ill add it to my entrance
I love my Entrance way, all made with 100% RedPower Panels, covers, strips, mini-blocks, etc.. :smile.gif:
not totally done though
By the way, anyone with some screen shots and maybe some captions to show what nesting is, and how i can make for eg, a 4 or 5 input NAND gate or any others for eg?

didnt you have the circuit diagram for the implementation of your instant carry adder on the thread before? i looked there but couldnt find it. i would love to try to make a version using redpower (if that would even make the design faster)

I don't have any screens to illustrate this, but the concept of nesting is simply putting one thing inside of another. For this application, you would be "nesting" AND gates "inside" of a NAND gate by having the AND gates output directly to the NAND gate. Seeing as you have a max of three inputs per gate, two AND gates should work for the given example.
NAND and AND require nested ANDs, while NOR and OR require nested ORs. This is because NAND and NOR invert the outputs, which you only want to happen once.
I have also had my instantmine break when using the mod. Does anyone know how to fix it? I looked at the FAQ, it says nothing about instantmine. I also don't want to read through about 300 pages to see if anyone else had this problem and if so, how to fix it. Finally, can anyone link me to the TMI patch that shows damage values over 15? I can't seem to find it.

See post by TheEnlightened on page 289 of the mod thread for an answer regarding SPC. This thread really is not the right place for support questions, by the way. Post in the main thread if you have more of them. But feel free to show off what you build using the mod here. :biggrin.gif:
I improved my Game of Life cell design. The complete cell is only 12x5x5 What I did is take the sum of a cell and it's horizontal neighbors, and share the result with the vertical neighbors. This eliminates 1.5 adders per cell, and also removes 2 inputs and 2 outputs. It does complicate the live/die logic a bit, since it has to deal with a sum of 9 instead of 8 (the cell itself is included in the addition). I also synced the circuits so that there is no 'jitter', this improves performance a bit. Made an 8 by 8 board. Computer lags for about 4 seconds per update, though.
Been wondering a while how its the game of life, i gave up trying to compare the game to this, can you please explain why you call it the game of life?
here is my finished 4x4 piston door, it's hooked op to three levers for now but it works. and although it's not flush with the wall i still think it looks okay.
Nice Work with the 4x4 Door, I figured out the wiring around making the pistons flush to the wall, all i need to do now is make the door Flat, by extending its center out.
Anyone know of a conductive block that can be pushed by pistons that will work with RedPower, gold seems only to work with vanilla redstone, which i'm trying to avoid...
Im trying to avoid using a wireless block to use as a source, it also would be good if the current could travel over 2 blocks

That seems to be the main problem with large piston mechanisms; getting the power where it needs to be without having wires / torches in view. Maybe we should ask Eloraam for a movable power source / conductive block.
I'm going to wait for 2 things before that happens, what 1.8 has in store, as I'm sure they are not revealing all of what they are coming out with. just the most obvious. as well as 1.8 of RedPower.
I have found that the repeater can shoot power through blocks, which pulls back my wall a bit, but i cant cover it with a cover plate... well see

I have made it so that individual pattens can be made, piston patterns. So I can have both a going up and going down sequence and if required multiple floors.
Nice, i came up with an idea in my head of a "Moving Sidewalk" and elevator inspired by the one made...crap forgot his name... it moves really fast though ill edit in nae and pics when i find his post

just finished making an 8 bit Kogge-stone adder :smile.gif: as far as i can tell, it looks like its operating at about 6 ticks. Im getting ready to start on a 16 bit version, hopefully a little more compact by making the cells vertical. not sure how to post a pic of it otherwise i would have :/

I like imgur.com - it's fast and easy.
When I did an image search on google for "Kogge-Stone Adder", I found it funny how many results were Minecraft screenshots or video links! XD
I'm curious what your design looks like, because I'm having a bit of trouble understanding what logic is supposed to be happening in this adder design. The tree graphs (on wikipedia and such) are pretty, but they don't seem to actually tell me what's being done with each input at each node... Or what the green nodes are doing.
that is a pretty awesome site! figured out the 8 bit adder in 6 ticks. if i replace all the or gates with just redwire that crosses, itll take off 2 ticks. with that, you can do 16 bit in 7 ticks worst case delay.
that ALU looks pretty cool, what functions does it have?
Im trying to automate a SSAGE but i can seem to get the timing right with the timer.
btw the SSAGE is a machine that uses a bug to clone sand and or gravel.

How so?
This is a discussion thread after all, if you post it, that in it self will benefit someone from your creations and/or discoveries.
You can upload screenshots, or even add a link to a online repository of your worlds files.
Feel free to follow the link in the OP to get to the mod page. Try it out I loved it, and a new update is in the works by Eloraam! :smile.gif:

its really un-compact right now. on the bottom left corner you can see where im working on making each "cell" 1 or 2 wide and vertical.
Heres the resource i used for the schematic, took forever to find it.

So many cool things could be done with it, and i could greatly compact many different designs.
