I know a tad bit about Japanese culture, architecture, and cuisine but mostly from Edo and modern age (both are after the 11th century). We do not have to worry about Japanese currency because Hindis use denier so why not the Japanese and Arabs?
just wanna say one thing about the armour it should be a fish scale armour which is not exactly made of fish scales but it does look a lot like fish scales it is very good for movement thanks to the fish scale disign which flex and bend easily.
wikipedia definition:Japanese scale armours
Japanese (samurai) individual scales are called kozane[8] Japanese scale armours constructed from fish type scales gyorin kozane were reportedly constructed in Japan as far back a the Fujiwawa period (11th century). "A primitive type of Japanese harness, the single laminae being of boiled leather, cut and beaten into pieces shaped like fish-scales." [9]
The farms should grow rice, like wheat only in 1 block deep water if possible. and should be places on a hill agein if possible as it was the most common to conserve usable space for building or animal husbandry. If not then a several, even squares of water around the outskirts of the willage will do.
Well on the topic of currency, traders from the Norman village could buy the Japanese currency for an equal amount of deniers and vice versa. The Indians could also have their own currency and have it trade-able.
I'm guessing that temples would be closer to the centre of the village, then special buildings such as markets and the such, then the housing and finally on the outskirts of the town, farms and mines.
i am studying japanese in high school you have shoguns ( japanese chief in feudal Japan ) and samurai oviosly and farmers just normal everything youve had so far but with japanese style skin
eg farmers with cloth tunics with red head band
I suggest individual guards and samurais, guards will be the typical millenaire guard, and samurais will have higher standards. Maybe samurai could actually patrol at night, and protect higher authorities. Different setup for a samurai would be nice.
End of Heian Period, just read some post over, it's 11th century :smile.gif:
Take care not to add too much stuff, I think villages could be made on the military village template with samuraï as chief, priest, bushi (guards), Shinto priest and men and women of the people (workers, farmers etc.)
We should keep the currency, it's a common "intercultural" currency in millenaire
I feel like an idiot because I didn't see that it was the 11th century, and because I forgot that there would be different kinds of villages…=.='
Lots of good ideas there, I have no time to reply to everything but very briefly:
- Good job Hesterry, that helps a lot.
- Nice to know that side about the various possibilities for the "village centre", that fits well with Millénaire
- I like that house, but it's too big for an ordinary village house. Any idea on a smaller one?
- Those rice paddies look cool, though any buildings that depends on being on a slope is going to be tricky to pull off.
Otherwise, regarding currencies I don't see the point of having separate currencies for each culture, it's just clutter. Since the Norman were there first I'm keeping the denier :wink.gif:
Also, assuming I switch to Minecraft Forge or an other system removing limits on block numbers (very likely before I get started on Japanese villages), I can afford a couple specific building materials for Japanese villages. I don't want to go overboard, so let's say the maximum would be half a dozen. One suggestion so far has been paper walls, that sounds good. Anything else?

For a weapon (not sure if we'll have a unique weapon), I propose the use of Tachi, a Japanese sword used around the late Heian period. It's fairly similar, but with the katana being sleeker and more compact. This could be sold by traders and possibly the weapon of choice for samurai.
I can certainly make a smaller one tomorrow. The key things that Japanese houses have are the unique entryway, a back patio with a very large awning, and a very large central room that served as the meeting area area, dining room, and bedroom. If you have that and the sloped roof, that's probably as close as you'll get to a Japanese home without some new blocks.
As for the rice paddies, the flat ones should still work. The best way to make it more distinctively Japanese (instead of it looking like any other minecraft farm), are the elevated roads through and around it.
On that note, if you have half a dozen blocks you're willing to add...
1) Paper walls, as mentioned
2) Tatami - these should be double blocks, like beds
3) Sliding doors, if possible
I definitely like a lot of the relevant ideas suggested here so far, but one thing I would definitely enjoy seeing, is the feudal system in Japanese villages. I know for me at least, that's one thing that really comes to mind when I think of 11th century Japan is feudalism. Perhaps this is because Japan marvelously portrayed feudalism, or my World Cultures teacher must have really drilled the idea of Japan being connected to feudalism in my head. Either way, it's a clever idea.
It'd be easy enough, have the lower classes and farmlands on the outter edges of the village, and the wealthier closer to the center of the village. Although for early villages just spawning this may look odd, because for later wealthy buildings to be constructed I imagine the lower classes would have to spawn a good few meters away. The samurai(and their dojo?) could be somewhere near the middle in between these two, and possibly have a patrol route that guides them through the village. I think this would be a really neat idea, especially in Millenaire that seems to release groundbreakingly new ideas and mob modifications as if it were simple to do. Hope someone else likes the idea too!
This topic is intended for discussions of future Japanese villages in Millénaire. As I have no particular knowledge of traditional Japanese villages, I need help in planning them. Specifically, I am interested in the following:
- Ideas of villager types and activities
- Ideas of items they would use
- Ideas on buildings they would use
- Ideas on the architecture/design of Japanese buildings
- Fluent Japanese speakers, preferably native ones, to provide the name of the villagers and buildings and the translations of the sentences
Whenever possible, ideas should match the targeted time period: the 11th century. Ideas can require new coding on my part (like many of the new activities of the Indian villagers), though be prepared for me to rule out many as too difficult or too CPU-intensive.
Here is a good idea.
Make sure that you try and make the structures a bit japanese-y
Like making the villagers stake fences and kill things that attack them.
When you kill someone in the game it takes 1 min for them to come back and the mayor will do something in his power for you to pay (NO SKELETONS ZOMBIES OR CREEPERS FIND ANOTHER WAY BY STOPPING THE TRADE FOR A FEW DAYS)
They can also speak more stuff to you.
"Can you help me with _________?"
" I will give you _____yen if you help __________ "
Include new stuff like umm... Something new.
Make sure it doesnt glitch the TooManyItems, it gaved me 5-8 unamed (its obsidian) and 5-8 obsidian.

Second house! Simpler design, and smaller... With this design, it's pretty easy to scale up and down by simply shrinking the dimensions. Key elements are still there - entryway, living room, and patio.
For villages near the ocean or a great body of water (fishing villages presumably) traders of the village could sell salmon, unobtainable by the player and can only be found in special villages by water. They could heal 3 hearts if eaten raw and heals 4 1/2 hearts after cooking. I had this idea after reading up on Japanes cuisine (Heian period) on wikipedia.
Dried fish and fowl were thinly sliced (e.g. salted salmon, pheasant, steamed and dried abalone, dried and grilled octopus), - Wikipedia
Well, warriors were known as "bushi" and bushi who were assigned to guard the emperor were known as "saburai", this was later changed to "samurai" for easier pronunciation and "shugo" later became known as guards.

Early japan? Nara and Heian periods? Somewhere in the middle like the Muromachi period? Or way up later in the Meiji period? Or even after that…?

How about "Gissha". It is cow-drawn carriage.
