When you install a texture pack where a porkchop looks like bacon, it would be nice to be able to change the name to 'bacon' so when you mouse over it in the inventory it's called bacon.
Does anybody know where in the minecraft.jar I can find the file of all the names? Or are all the items seperate somewhere?
In the minecraft.jar you will find a folder called 'lang' In that folder is a file called en_US.lang. Open that up with notepad or something and find where it says Porkchop and change it to Bacon. If you use Notepad ++ or anything of the sort you can find it on lines 447-449.
I have the same problem except when i try to open en_US.lang it says "en_US.lang is of unkown program or damaged." What am I supposed to do? I use WinRAR buy the way.

my menu names have changed E.G instead of multiplayer it say play with some mates how do i fix it?
XD you are currently in the Austrailian Language (I use it all the time, its great) However, if you don't like it, you can go to options, and click on the button in the bottom right with the globe and it will bring up a list of languages to choose from
It works better if you change the resource pack directly, because when you load Minecraft, it updates any changes in the jar file, so if it sees something different in the jar file (like bacon instead of porkchop) it will change it back. Whereas with resource packs, they don't change when Minecraft is loaded
