1) Powered light blocks: (glowstone dust + glass + redstone) so you can turn the lighting of an area on and off (FEATURE STATUS: COMPLETE)
2) Hibachi: (iron + netherrack + flint + redstone) top surface of block ignites when it receives power, and extinguishes when power stops (Thanks to GunboatDebater for the block idea)(FEATURE STATUS: COMPLETE)
3) Minecart Booster Block (soul sand + iron ingots + redstone dust): When placed under a track, and receiving power, it accelerates any minecart over it. When unpowered, it decelerates the cart. I figure this recipe works well, as one would exect the soul sand to naturally slow the cart, and it also makes some twisted sense that if you apply a redstone current to the souls trapped in the sand, they might be "motivated" to work for the player and give the minecart a push. And yes...I'm suggesting players torture souls for a minecart boost...technological progress always comes at a price :wink.gif: (FEATURE STATUS: COMPLETE)
4) Minecart Pressure plate Blocks (iron + redstone dust + stone pressure plate): Why turn pressure plates into a block? Well, one thing that is currently missing from the pressure plates in game is that there is no way to have them reliably trigger by the passage of a minecart. These blocks will correct that problem using a similar mechanism to the booster above: when a minecart passes over the block, the block generates a redstone signal. Simple, yet effective (FEATURE STATUS: COMPLETE)
5) Cement Buckets (slime ball + gravel + water bucket): Flows like lava or water, but solidifies into a solid block of smooth stone with time. If a redstone signal applied to a source block of cement placed in the world, it keeps it in its liquid state until the signal is turned off (cement traps + syncronizing flow for mass simultaneous construction). Might eventually be cool if you could apply a dye to the cement bucket to simplify construction of large colored objects....but I won't include that aspect in the initial feature list (FEATURE STATUS: COMPLETE)
[** Intended First Release of Mod to Public...Features below this point will be added incrementally afterwards **]
6) Photovoltaic Redstone Sensor (recipe TBD): Circuit elements that detect the presence of light and can power a circuit based on it. Will also be usable in combination with the focused redstone torch described below to create detection circuits for when something crosses the beam of light (placed block, mob, other player, etc.) (FEATURE STATUS: PLANNED)
7) Focused Redstone Torch ( redstone dust + glowstone dust + diamond). Basically functions like a real-world laser, but NOT as a weapon or for damaging creatures, or something that causes laser beams to fly around everywhere for light shows, but for simple display and detection. In other words, power one of these and it projects a point of light on whatever surface it intersects at a distance. Could open up a whole realm of user-created displays (it solves the density problem with creating displays out of redstone torches). Could also be used in combination with photo-resistors to communicate a singnal over long distances without having to lay miles of redstone wire. Could also be used as "trip wires" in combination with photo-resistors. Could also be used to aid in contruction in marking the co-ordinates or boundaries of construction (like in building a large bridge and using a light beam to mark its height at the other edge so the ends match up). Really, the possibilities for emergent gameplay are huge here. Note that I do intend to limit the range of these, but it will likely be much further than redstone signals currently travel (like 32 or 64 blocks...likely dependant upon how this feature affects game performance) (FEATURE STATUS: PLANNED)
Anyways, work has been going on for around 2 days now, and I have the first couple of blocks implemented and in-game:
Lemme know what you think. Comments and suggestions are appreciated :smile.gif:
I've added the pressure plate blocks to the list of intended features above, and added my recipe for minecart boosters as well as modifying that for concrete (I've decided to use soulsand in the boosters instead of goo both because in makes a bit more sense in terms of game-universe logic, and because the soul-sand looks far better on the top of the blocks...goo also makes some sense as an adhesive compound for the concrete, makes it a little more challenging for the player to craft it so there isn't an endless supply of the stuff if you're playing ligit, and gives a use to the otherwise useless goo). Also reorded the feature list to reflect the order in which I plan on doing these (or already have).
Ok, I've modified the minecart booster recipe to include soulstone, got them to emit particles when powered, and made some modifications to the sounds to suit the new recipe.
I've made a little video of the results, as I think it's some seriously funny **** :smile.gif:
NOTE: The ambient sounds in the background are from a whole series of nearby powered boosters.
This really makes me wish I could use wolves as a crafting item :wink.gif:
And btw, that huge mountain I'm standing on was created with the buckets of cement I dumped while testing this feature out. The partially burried structure at the bottom is what is left of my house, encased in cement :wink.gif:
Aha! I do believe an in-game use for slime-balls just occured to me!
It makes sense that slime would slow-down something travelling over it. But what happens when you an apply a redstone signal to slime? Well, it turns out that in "my world" it causes the opposite effect and accelerates whatever passes over it!
In other words, expect slime to be part of the crafting recipe for minecart boosters :smile.gif:
I'm a big fan of using existing components that currently serve no purpose in-game as part of crafting recipes. You'll notice so far that I've used both glowstone and netherrack in my recipes for lights and BBQ's so far, and you can expect more of this in the future in this mod (like soul sand being a component of concrete).
I agree that as of late development has shifted away from core gameplay mechanics and towards the "fluffy stuff".
Redstone was really the last truly impressive addition to Minecraft, and that was back in Alpha. If the piston mod makes the cut the way the rumors say it will, I'll definitely be a happy camper.
It would be nice if you could download them separately.
Also an idea:
A block that dispensers stuff in to chest mine-carts and then one that take them out. It would make Mine-carts useful for MINING! EX: when the block is under a minecart, the stuff from inside the minecart goes into the stationed block. when its above, the stuff from the stationary block goes in the cart. this way you could have a loop going around with a minecart system and not worry about a full inventory to go up to the surface.
It would be nice if you could download them separately.
Sorry man, but that's just not going to happen :smile.gif:
Maintaining one mod when updates come out is fine, but going through the hassle of updating a bunch of seperate mods is just not something I'm willing to put myself through.
One possibility I may explore in the future is having a config file that allows you to enable each block individually if you so choose however.
That's really cool. Finally we can have light turn on and off when we want to again, ever since that controllable block that was a bit to complicated to use.
Well, in all fairness, there ARE a number of lightbulb mods already out there. It's a very common idea that a lot of people obviously want in the game.

But by the time it's ready for release, a better name might attract more people :wink.gif:
Nah, the name is staying. I'm not just doing this for the sake of having a mod, but also for the sake of proving a point (as detailed in the thread that spawned this mod) :wink.gif:
This is probably the most impressive undertaking I've seen on the forums. Congrats. I mean you complained but ACTUALLY did something about it. Almost all on here simply whine.
Personally, none of these are better than wolves. But hey, they are pretty cool. I wouldn't mind seeing this in-game.
Well, if you like wolves more than these things, I certainly won't hold it against you and you are of course welcome to use the mod anyways :wink.gif:
I think it's worth mentioning that the focus of this mod is to provide core features that I feel have been forgotten by the wayside while more frivilous features were built into the game (which I personally consider wolves to be).
I'm basically trying to fix the glaring ommissions in the main game the prevent the features already in there from living up to their full potential.
Like, what's the point of redstone if it's lacking in many of the basic input/output devices that would be required to let it effectively interact with the rest of the world? Why are minecarts in there without a reasonable method of accelerating them or having them trigger other elements? Why is the nether in there if none of the blocks you can find there are even included in crafting recipes providing no compelling reason to explore it or gather resources there?
This is probably the most impressive undertaking I've seen on the forums. Congrats. I mean you complained but ACTUALLY did something about it. Almost all on here simply whine.
Thank you sir :smile.gif:
I will of course feel a lot better about this whole undertaking once the first version is released. Thankfully, that sould be within the next couple of days :smile.gif:
I'm currently working on a mod that spawned out of this thread:
http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1020&t=256836

[********************* UPDATE **********************]
A few hours later, and Minecart Boosters are now in :smile.gif:
Note that the nether sounds are what I'm using for placeholder until I get my hands on some good mechanical ambient sounds.
The boosters accelerate carts when powered, and decelerate them when they are not, as demonstrated in this short vid:
I'll probably play with the exact values a bit until it feels right, but all the mechanics are in there and working.
[********************* UPDATE **********************]
I've added the pressure plate blocks to the list of intended features above, and added my recipe for minecart boosters as well as modifying that for concrete (I've decided to use soulsand in the boosters instead of goo both because in makes a bit more sense in terms of game-universe logic, and because the soul-sand looks far better on the top of the blocks...goo also makes some sense as an adhesive compound for the concrete, makes it a little more challenging for the player to craft it so there isn't an endless supply of the stuff if you're playing ligit, and gives a use to the otherwise useless goo). [********************* UPDATE **********************]
In preperation for the release I've put together a new video demonstrating the booster blocks (since old video was using a different texture)
I've got all the files packed up, so I should be ready to release this thing after I run just a few more tests to ensure stability :smile.gif:
[********************* UPDATE **********************]
BETTER THAN WOLVES HAS BEEN RELEASED!!!!!
Head on over to the following thread to grab a copy :smile.gif:

And yes, it's true. This thing is going to get done, and is moving along fast!
I am about to update the OP with a new video of the minecart booster in-game :smile.gif:
Currently, I have the booster recipe set to 8 iron ingots, plus redstone dust, so yeah, the cost is at least in the same neighborhood :wink.gif:
It makes sense that slime would slow-down something travelling over it. But what happens when you an apply a redstone signal to slime? Well, it turns out that in "my world" it causes the opposite effect and accelerates whatever passes over it!

Thanks muncher! That's the intent :smile.gif:
UPDATE: I've decided to add a new intended feature to the mod to go hand in hand with the minecart booster...pressure plate blocks.
Check the OP for the description :smile.gif:
Check the OP for a new video of what happens when you power them up and turn them off.

It's looking good for a release of the first version of this mod sometime this weekend :smile.gif:

Cement is in! I thought this one would be a lot harder to implement than it actually was. In the end, took me just a few hours :smile.gif:
I've updated the OP with a new video!
Next step: FIRST RELEASE!!! :smile.gif:
