Where the title 'Textures' comes in do i leave it blank if i am making a custom block with a custom skin. and just let the File names match each other?
You don't need to use the textures property if you aren't setting multiple textures on your custom block.
To use a custom texture for your block the icon name must have the same name (except extension).
Does anyone know how to fix custom torches? I've tried placing them on the ground, and it only works if I stand in a certain direction. If I stand in any other direction it is put on the side of a block, even in air.
Pretty much, instead of depending on where you aim to place the torch, it depends on which direction you are standing, like minecart tracks. Is there a way to fix this or is this still an unfixed bug?

I haven't added the torch placements yet, it's on my todo list.

Thank you! And is there any way to have an item (a staff in my case) that can be used as a weapon or tool, but can also be placed as light?

Also, could you make it possible so that torches can be placed on the ceiling? Tungsten = light bulb filament.
@scokeev9
For the staff, you can't create an item that's also a block.
Placing torches on the ceiling is a good idea, I'll add it to my to-do list.
But there may be a workaround (haven't tested the code):

The picture of the staff is still only 1 block high. It doesn't change. And it would only highlight the boundary if I looked at the bottom 1x1x1 region, not the block above it.
Edit: I give up right now. Keeping it 1 block tall.
I found some thing strange about :
Installation:
1. Install ModLoader.
2. Extract makeMyItem.
3. Copy all files from the "minecraft.jar" folder into your "minecraft.jar" file.
:biggrin.gif: shouldnt it be makeMyBlock????
Love the mod! Thank you for all the hard work. I'm a lil confused about the "Bounds" and "AddBound" properties. Could someone plz explain the usage, preferably with a simple example for each? I think i figured out how "Bounds" changes the shape of the block, but when i play around with AddBound I find that my block suddenly allows me to walk through it. Although this is is a pretty cool effect, no matter what i set the numbers for "AddBound" to its the same result.
Also, i've recently discovered that I cannot place objects such as buttons, doors, pressure plates, etc upon my custom blocks. Any way to fix that?
All my custom blocks work excellent. Textures apply with ease, although it would be nice to be able to apply different custom textures to different sides of the same block. (all my attempts at this have failed)
Thank you in advance for any assistance.
edit: I was also wondering if it matters what order properties/commands are defined within the file.

Here's a quote that I wrote from the makeMyBlock Tutorial topic:

How to make shapes, explained.
I had trouble trying to create a simply torch shape, and understanding how the "Bounds" and "AddBound" functions worked, so I'm posting this tutorial on how to do so.
First off, here is the code for a simple torch, the file is named "Water Torch.block":
# Water Torch
// This line names the item.
ID=95
// This sets the ID number.
?Y ,X , ,1
// This is the recipe.
*X=280
*Y=326
// These are the variables; 280 is stick, and 326 is a water bucket.
Light=0.7
// This sets the light value of the torch. This value only ranges from 0, to 1.0.
Texture=50
// This will use the texture of the normal torch to simplify the learning process.
Bounds=0.4,0,0.4,0.6,0.6,0.6
// This is the complicated portion. I will break it up into sections below.
AddBound,0,0,0,0.6,1,0.6
// This part changes what areas you and other mobs etc. can walk through.
Type=Torch
// Sets the type of item.
Material=8
// This states that this block has the durability of a flower, but doesn't work correctly currently.
Bounds - Changes what area of the block can be aimed at and hit, and changes the black border around the item when it is aimed at.
AddBound - Changes what area of the block is solid.
To start off, the Bounds function is always in this format:
Bounds=x,y,z,x1,y1,z1
These will be the coordinates. Coordinates are normally <= 1 (less than or equal to 1)
The coordinate 0.4 would give a point in part of one block.
The coordinate 2 would give a point in a block farther away (if that makes sense).
x and z are the coordinates that are horizontal, and the y coordinate is for the vertical coordinate. Together, the three first coordinates, x, y, and z, will make ONE point.
In other words, the x is length, the y is height, and the z is depth.
The first x states the first coordinate of the object. It is set at "0.4".
The first y states the first vertical coordinate. This is set at "0".
The first z states the second horizontal coordinate. This is at "0.4" also.
In a 3D cube, this would give us our first point close to the middle of the block horizontally, and all the way at the bottom, vertically.
The second coordinates, x1, y1, and z1, will together set one point.
These two points will form a 3d shape.
The AddBound function works exactly the same, but is used for a different purpose.
If this did not help, then copy the code for the water torch into notepad, and save the file as "Water Torch.block", and mess around with the values one coordinate at a time!
I hope that this will help someone at least a little bit! =D
Currently there is no way to allow buttons or torches, etc. to be placed on custom blocks (from my attempts).
Also, it does not matter what order commands and properties are in. You can have the ID=XX at the bottom and have &Use,X at the very top.
Sorry if I made any mistakes, or typed anything unclear, but I'm typing this at 4:24am, so please understand.
Hope this helpsSSS:SSSS: ! =D
I had seen your post on the tut thread, and it was very helpful. Although I'm still lost on the "AddBound" part. My experimentations with AddBound still produce the same "walk-through" effect no matter what I enter as values, so its purpose eludes me atm.
Very helpful to have an answer in regards to the buttons and property order. tyvm
Edit: Just reread your post...the changes in regards to AddBound were very helpful, ty again.
Is it possible to create complex block shapes; for example a stair block but upside-down?
If so, what would the code be for such a thing, i've tried a couple things with Bounds with no success.

Right now, there isn't a way to make more than just rectangles, and a few of the predefined shapes, like the stair block. I think support for complex shapes will be added later, but I'm not really sure. I do hope so, though.
Umm... I'm having a little problem with makeMyBlock! If I make a new block and try to place it in game! Then sometimes it allows me to place it down but with some blocks it just crashes and shows an error report! I'll post the error report here a little later but, well it only happens when I make a custom texture for a block. For example, I made a slime block. Now I made the texture for the slime block! I put those in the right place, and now I go into the game make a slime block like this:
= Slime Ball
and then when I place it it just crashes! But I also made colored wooden planks and only these colors of the planks work
Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, White and black! If I place another colored plank (Orange, Pink, Purple, Olive, Brown, Maroon, Lime etc...) then it just crashes! I also have made a Coal Block with a custom texture. Everything works!
So now still the question, Why do some blocks allow to place in Minecraft, and why do some of them Crash Minecraft?
Can you help? Pleease!
I tested some coloured planks and they worked fine:
I'm not sure why some block textures crash your minecraft.
Do you really think anyone can help you with this much information?
You don't need to use the textures property if you aren't setting multiple textures on your custom block.
To use a custom texture for your block the icon name must have the same name (except extension).
Atm you can't, you can set the hardness to to that of redstone but not what can break it.
Goddamn do I hate this name z_z

How would I make it two blocks tall?
I've tried this and it just made the black border around it taller:
