There are four general reasons why a black screen would occur:
1. META-INF wasn't deleted.
2. You have a conflicting mod installed.
3. You are using the browser version of Minecraft, only the standalone version works.
4. You installed the mod on the wrong version of Minecraft.

Minecraft version is stated at the top left when you're in-game. Also on the title screen.
Also, he was just giving you a list to help ween out your issue, which is clearly a user error since you said you think you have a conflicting mod.
Conflicting mods happen because two different mods effect the same .class file. Unless the mod creator says that it is compatible with _______ mod, which effects the same .class file, it is not compatible. You can check that by paying attention to which .class files you are replacing when you install mods, otherwise you should delete your bin folder and start over.

Uninstall all your mods and re-install until it doesn't work, then don't install the last one that crashed it, or, if you know what started the black screening, don't install that next time around. (Unless my sarcasti-meter is broken, and you actually fixed it, in which case congrats.)

I'm a decent Java programmer learning Python, and I'm skilled with server administration, WorldEdit, redstone circuitry, etc. Feel free to show me mod ideas, I'm thinking about starting to make mods, and I'd be happy to give insight as to how a mod could be implemented in Minecraft.
