I found a fix for if you played 1.3 before realising the map files have changed.
Delete all of your old style map files
Unpack the .data files using RegionTool.jar
Delete all of the .mcr files
Open Level.dat with NBTedit
Delete the "Last Played" and "Version" entries
Save
Open the map with minecraft, and watch your work return.
What it does:
When you play in beta 1.3, along with converting your map files, it also adds two more data entries into the .dat file.
I'm not a tech genius, but I assume it uses the Version entry to determine when the save format was last updated, and the last played to, well, tell you when you last played. By deleting these, the game stops thinking that you have already converted your map files, and allows you to reconvert using the more up to date files. This means :smile.gif:, rather than the :sad.gif: you had before.
Vista had what, some bad code for copying files, which was eventually fixed? Seemed to work fine on my machine. We had to have Vista in order to get Windows 7 anyways, since Windows 7 is based on Vista's code.
In any case, very nice to see this in Minecraft, and my file count for most of my worlds went down from thousands of files to dozens (or less)!
Much easier for Dropbox to handle, and should perform better. Although I am noticing a bit more lag sometimes? I'm thinking it could use some optimization.
FYI, it's probably a good idea for most people to defrag the drive after the update - I'm sure all of those tiny files before before the update likely contributed to a lot of fragmentation. I'm defragmenting my drive right now, in the hopes that I can get some performance back.

When all is said and done, Will you have said more than you have done?
Please come out with the updates version for 1.3. Some people says its integrated in now, but I'm still getting huge fps drops due to chunk updates. I'm sure you'll make a lot of people happy if you do this, not just me.
I've followed your instructions, Deleted the Meta-Inf and still, my minecraft will not load.. Could it maybe be because im at 1.3_1 and its not updated yet? :tongue.gif:

It *is* integrated now. There's no way to make a new McRegion for 1.3 because it already uses it. Maybe you need optimine or turn off betterlight?
If it is, they made it worse. Im getting a lot of lag now. With the old one my chunk updates were fast. Now I can barely go in a cave without the chunk updates lagging my minecraft on tiny render distance. I've installed optimine. Turing off the smooth lighting gives me about 1 extra fps. Notch did not integrate this mod in the correct way. All I'm asking is for an updated file to overwrite the current one and make it like my minecraft used to be with this mod.
I did exactly the steps you outlined, but now when I select "play offline" on the launcher, the minecraft window is completely black and I cannot see the menu at all. This has never happened before. Any idea why I might get this error?
Just a question: under what application do I run regiontool.jar?
I tried converting my maps, but the testing world (Everything was acquired using INVEdit, it was just a cannon testing world :biggrin.gif:) was COMPLETELY wiped of all editing. The map had reverted to what it was when I first spawned.
I'm not sure if anyone has said this before, but Scaevolus you should continue updating McRegion and continue making it better, so maybe Mojang won't have to worry much about updating it. :smile.gif:
I don't care what anyone says but Notch's team did not implement this mod properly b/c I'm getting jitters/dips in my framerate that werent there b4 and its really annoying.

Try turning off the betterlight.
Thats not it b/c I used betterlight in 1.2 and it was fine. In fact I'm getting worse framerates now with normal light then I did before with betterlight....

You will need to use the command prompt. (windows key+R, type cmd, press enter)

To extract all the chunks from the region files, do something like this:
Then, since you already converted it once, you will need to do this:

Someone needs to propose this to Notch as a way to improve performance. Unfortunately, no one with a brain is going to want to make their Minecraft maps potentially unreadable for the future in case this mod doesn't get updated quickly after every patch.
HAHA Notch has now included it in minecraft... thumbs up for McRegion and Betterligth, i hope he adds Bettergrass and Betterstairs too :tongue.gif:

Thanks for the help guys but I think I'm gonna start over given the fact of the seed generator now I can have a really nice look world to start with.

(It even says your username when the worlds are auto converted )

(PS, take some of these anyway: (It's that great!))

i give if you do
I just downloaded and enabled this, then realized that it isn't 1.3 compatible yet...
