I registered to post this fix i stumbled across. I had issues getting my unpacked files to load into minecraft. Out of desperation I tried renaming the files in my region folder from the *.data extension used my McRegion to *.mcr. This appears to have worked and my world appears fine.
Of course back everything up in case this doesn't work for you.
Just to warn you, this will corrupt one chunk per region file, so I don't recommend it.
How do you determine that? My unpacked world was not successfully recognized by Minecraft. My inventory and position persisted, but none of my modifications did.
I can not get the regiontool to work, as I am on a Mac. Whenever I try to put "java -jar RegionTool.jar unpack ~/.minecraft/saves/World1 " into terminal, it says "Unable to access jarfile RegionTool.jar." As I know, most of these users are on a PC, not a Mac. Would you mind adding a tutorial for mac users on how to unpack the files correctly? Thanks. And no, I am not going to convert to Windows Vista or get a new PC.

Do an "ls" command in your terminal--if RegionTool.jar isn't a file name listed in the output, you need to move RegionTool.jar into the right directory (and you can find the path of the directory with the "pwd" command) using Finder or Terminal if you know how.

That you very much for the help. I think I'll try that a bit later, right after I figure out how to use terminal. Time to add more things to my /limited/ computer knowledge.

8.] Never ever use any Operating System besides Microsoft Windows Vista.
I'm pretty sure something is wrong with you, maximdymok--Windows 7 > Windows Vista.
Thanks for your work, Scaevolus. Do you plan on releasing an unpacker for 1.3's modified version of your format? I tried using the current unpacker, but it appears only to handle the terrain seed and player data, or something--it doesn't migrate any changes made to the terrain after initial generation.
Hey man, at least get a complete consumer range list out to emphasize the point! Listed by quality from best to crappiest!
Windows 7 > Windows XP > Windows 98 > Windows 95 > Windows 2000 > Windows 3.1 > Windows 3.0 > Windows 2.11 > Windows 2.10 > Windows 2.03 > Windows 1.04 > Windows 1.03 > Windows 1.02 > Windows 1.01 > MS DOS > Windows Me > Windows Vista
On another note, I too would like to congratulate Scaevolus on his mod being integrated into the client. I am just wondering, is there any way to expedite the conversion process? Our server's map is 150 MB and since the 1.8 MB map I just converted on my singleplayer just took around half an hour I anticipate a long process to convert the massive map on our server. (I am assuming I will need to convert it to comply with 1.3 clients?)

It's not Vista's fault that Microsoft pulled a Jurassic Park and took an incomplete Windows 7, filled in the empty bits with Windows XP code, and released it with no motivation other than pure profit.
I tried installing this just now and it black screens after i logged in. I followed all the install directions so i'm not sure what's up with it. Could anyone help me out?

It hasn't been updated, idiot.
That, and it's been integrated (supposedly) into beta 1.3.
I switched to McRegion like 2 months before, and now Notch has implented this in game.
so all my progress is lost as minecraft converted the old files itself somehow.
(like most buildings are gone)
what can i do about this??

I had the same problem and found this great tool if you are able to get your old save and version back.

Good luck! http://www.hacktheday.com/beginners-gui ... al-part-1/ may be a useful guide for you. If you come across any specific questions, feel free to PM me.

go to this page and use it as the directions say (http://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comme ... efore_the/)
sorry couldn't get the link to work.
Try writting
Instead of the space, or with the numeric pad
- Imperial Lands by lolo500
- PortalCraft by Leggos_My_Eggos
Mods & Tools I support:
- DJoslin's Creations by DJoslin
- mIDas by Pfaeff
- Programmable CPU by Biohazard
Didnt work...bat file immediatly closes everytime I open it....
Put quotes around it.
Instead of java -jar RegionTool.jar unpack C:\Users\Some Dude, do java -jar RegionTool.jar unpack "C:\Users\Some Dude"
alt+255 is NOT a regular space. Try ALT+32 with the numeric keypads, which should function as a regular space.
