Interesting concept, and I've been fooling around with it a bit, trying different things. The only problem I've seen is that the game engine does not draw any block that doesn't have air touching it. So, it can't be used to just "see" ore deposits that are embedded in the rock, they just aren't drawn until they are exposed to air. It does come in handy to find caves and dungeons and to spot out lava, which can be useful.
For a true "x-ray" vision to work, there'd have to be a change in how the game engine draws blocks. If someone could mod the game to draw all transparent blocks like glass is currently drawn, then this would be an easy way to find ore deposits. As glass does allow the block next to it to be drawn, it essentially works like air, if all the stone were treated like glass, then you could easily see everything else underground.

Exactly! Another problem I'd like to find a way to overcome is being able to see drawn blocks, but being unable to see what kind they are if they're in a completely unlit area. The way it is now, unless the block is being hit by naturally formed light in the environment- either from the sun or from lava- you won't be able to see what it is until you're close enough to place a torch next to it. The good news is that dungeons have distinct, cuboid shapes, so that makes it quite a bit easier to pick them out from the environment.
On my experimental texture set, I wrote the word "DIRT" "STONE" etc across the texture tile for that block type, it looks like garbage, but at least you know what you're (not) seeing. I was using a 32x32 texture set, so it made the words at least readable, if you're close enough, otherwise it was just a jumble of letters from a distance.

I'm pretty sure she/he mention that it was for functionality, not beauty.

I was talking about my experimental texture pack, not Eraiya's. These aren't meant to look good, just let you see underground.
Just for grins, here's my 32x32 x-ray terrain file, in case anyone is remotely interested.
hmmm.... seems Imageshack puts a "v" at the end of the file name for some reason, take that off to use it. Pretty much the only useful thing you can get out of these kinds of texture files is for spotting dungeons (found two right next to each other, but they only had one chest between them, huh?) and mapping caverns & lava. Found some lava right below the floor of my main mine that I didn't know was there, which I can now be careful of, or get rid of.
And, before anyone complains, yes, I completely stole the idea from Eraiya, so I'm not making like I thought this up or anything.

It's cool, I don't mind- I'm just happy to see that someone's thought of a creative, new direction to take x-ray texture packs in. That, and since I wasn't the very first person to come up with the idea for a see-through texture pack, I can't claim credit for anything but the work I did in getting it done my way. Updating one last time- I somehow forgot to add ice and snow, and after looking at this picture of yours, that reminded me to do nether dirt, too- annnd after this, I think I'm done. If you choose to continue working on it, well- do your best!
I wasn't going to do anything else with this, thinking I had discovered all there was to it, but I was fooling with something else and found a new way to use the x-ray effect. I just changed one texture to transparent, the snow block, and if you place one or more on the ground, it lets you see what's under you. Still works the same way as the other transparent texture packs, but this seems a bit more useful to me. For one, you don't have EVERYTHING transparent, so you can actually see what type of material it is when you start digging. You can place & pick up a snow block pretty easily, but you have to re-craft it back to a snow block from the snowballs you get. But, for a quick window into the ground, it works pretty well. I used it to find that lava cave in the screenshot, which was just underground from where I was standing. Then, once you dig the snow block back up, your terrain goes back to normal looking. I don't know what this will look like on a snow biome, if that uses the same snow texture, the whole thing will be transparent. But, since the snow block is pretty uncommon (at least for me) that seemed to be the one to use.
And here's the terrain file, upsized to fit a 32x32 texture pack, since that's what I run usually.
The usual note to remove the "f" from the end of the filename before using.

Now in multiplayer, people can gain an unfair advantage! And make other people really angry! And what's better, the server administrators can do nothing to stop it!
Sarcasm, for those of you that didn't notice. As a server administrator, these texture packs ruin servers.
That's why it's best to use the last version where just wool is transparent, place a couple wool blocks to get a look for where you need to go, then pick them up and mine a bit, place them again to get another look, etc. The version where everything is transparent is a bit overkill and can be confusing.

Finally! Something I can use wool for! But seriously, a single transparent block is a great idea. I'll start using it, and tell myself I'm justified as long as iron is at current rarity.
(5-6x less common than reality. Not that the game needs to be realistic, but I think it would be sweet if you could mine an iron vein and have enough metal to use metal tools and build a cart track to haul the stuff back out of your mine.)

Yes, using my original texture set can be quite disorienting, use the latest one where just wool is transparent. Place some wool to get a look at where you want to go, then pick it up, mine some tunnel, then place it again to get your bearings, pick it up, mine some more....

U didnt create this we all saw that dudes texture pack.u couldnt make a texture pack if your life depended on it.
you make me wanna go on you
dude... making an xray texture pack is insanely easy... sure if it was a copied texture pack for hte sake of look good one might believe you, but xray... comeon its not that hard o.O

Ahhhh, even better, if I get a chance, I will do that.
Had some time, here's a 16x16 copy, wool transparent
and 32x32
Rename as needed.
OK, this is most likely the last time..... lol
