Chunks are stored in 16x16x128 blocks. This means that 64 blocks below sea level is bedrock and 64 blocks above is the sky limit. You can't change the height limit unless you change how the blocks are saved.
Yes, as JoelMacro said, it might very well crash the game. It's possible in Creative, since that works very different than Alpha. In Alpha everything is saved and loaded in a different way, and if the level is higher than the game expects, it will crash.
will it crash if i got a good computer? is it it java itself...

How good your computer is is irrelevant. It will crash because you will be trying to put a block outside the bounds of the chunk.
Funny! I've answered this three times today! Please read this post. You will note that they say it's possible to change the height limit. However, to do so requires a lot of alteration of the game's code (mostly to change the size of the numbers the variables are able to store). So, as has been said, the computer is completely irrelevant. The codebase itself can't handle an increase in the height of the levels. Yes, you could alter the codebase to accommodate an increase in the height (as mentioned in that post I linked), but doing so would require a reasonable amount of effort, and it would break compatibility with all other versions of Minecraft (no online, and you wouldn't be able to load older saves, or share your new saves with others). So, realistically, no, it's not really a good idea (at this time?) to modify the height limit.
Tl;dr - The variables used in the game's code can't accommodate taller worlds. It would break the game to do so. Mouser X over and out.
Ive also been very interested in doing this, it would be great if someone finally got around to doing it.
Having a slider in the menu options to determine the height of a new world being generated would be great.

Some of us (like myself) dont play online, or have any interest in sharing saves with others. Personally I just play single player survivor, and I would love to have maps 512 or even more in height. At the moment this does seem a bit drastic, but if notch (or someone else) was to improve the chunk handling and make it a more efficeint method then it wouldnt be an issue.

you might get some problems rendering the world, since (from what i've experienced) the game renders all vertical chunks, and adding more chunks will give more rendering (eventually resulting in overload if you add too much)
So all the chunks in a vertical column are loaded at once for each chunk? (correct me if Im wrong) This seems very inefficient... Especially for taller maps. Some kind of loading mechanism should be developed, to load and unload the chunks depending on where the player is. Surely when Im walking over the ground all the blocks underneath, right down to the floor, haven't been loaded? Similarly when Im in a cave deep underground I would hope that all the blocks up on the surface are not loaded either?
A player-proximity chunk loaded would be a much better idea yes?

As I understand it, yes. Something I've seen on a few different occasions, is while mining, the game "forgets" to render the rock immediately in front of you, resulting in inky blackness, broken by lots and lots of lava filled caves (off in the distance). Obviously, that's a bug. I mention it though, since it implies to me that, if the game is rendering those far off caves, then they must be loaded into memory. Thus, to be loaded (even though they shouldn't be visible due to distance and location), it seems to me that chunks are indeed loaded in their entirety. So, I'm fairly certain they are indeed loaded, though not rendered (at least, I doubt they are. I can't imagine my PC could actually run the game if that was the case). For a "height mod" to be viable, this issue should really be addressed, in addition to the changes already mentioned in the other thread.
There's a thread (I don't know the link to it. :sad.gif: ) where the posters have compiled a huge list of direct quotes from Notch (and link to their source). In there, I recall reading that he was considering raising the height limit to 256 (up from the current 128), but most likely no higher, due to the way that chunks are loaded/generated. PLEASE NOTE: That is "hear-say", because I don't have a link to the quote, and it's been a few weeks since I read it (and even longer since Notch originally said it, so he could have changed his mind), so please take it with a grain of salt, and not as truth.
Yes, I'd love a height mod as well. However, I really doubt such a thing is going to happen, unless Notch himself implements it. It's certainly possible (anything is possible in software), but it doesn't sound very feasible to me. Obviously, if someone who really liked a challenge decided to tackle it, it could be done. I doubt such an individual is going to do so though. But yes, if such a thing happened, it'd be awesome, and I'd certainly use it (it'd make floating islands much more fun!). Mouser X over and out.
if you attempt to change the height limit in minecraft for a mod you better put some time into that!!! and if you have the correct tools to make the height limit unlimited that would take months!!! and im sure no one wants to waste there time to do that not even to mention that it might fail on you i dont wanna waste time on an experiment that might fail i create mods and that sounds pretty tough let me give you some advise stop asking people and try it yourself you'll realize it aint easy

Then modify the bounds for the chunk?
