I just realised that, with the Halloween Update just a few days from now, most of the present mods will be rendered useless (oh, and mapping programs too. It'll get pretty hectic around this forum). My programming knowledge is rudimentary, so I will not be able to keep this thing going after it arrives. Thus, I have decided not to bash my head against the keyboard trying to get javac to compile for me anymore. I'll just wait until the update arrives and then start anew with this thing.
maybe im an idiot but read this thread 4 times and i cant seem to find any instructions anywhere :[
i downloaded the image, changed it to png and renamed it moon, put it in the right place (ive done this all before) but then i dont know what to do. the game crashes when i do all of the following;
*nothing (just the changed moon image)
*installed some e.class file i found in a previous post (even though it didnt say we were meant to anywhere i just assumed)
*then i deleted the meta inf(because someone else did that)
none of it worked, although i got a step further with each thing that i did.
can someone type up a step by step instructions? I came here from another thread, it told me to come HERE for instructions.... then there were none.....
i really love the idea of this!!!
PS i should add that i was working with a completely unedited version of minecraft. I had just freshly reinstalled it prior to attempting all of this.
For everyone trying to install the mod and getting crashes: the game has a fixed size limit for the moon.png file. Currently, the only way to use large images is using xau's HD texture fix.
Here are some instructions:
0. Make sure Minecraft is not running!
1. Downlaod xau's HD texture fix, make sure your minecraft.jar is a clean, unedited one, or it will not work. This is currently the only tool that allows the use of large moons
2. The next step depends on the size of the image you want to use as your moon.png. if its smaller than 512x512, there's no modification needed. If it's between 512x512 and 1024x1024, set the "tile size" option to 64x64. If it's between 1024x1024 and 2048x2048, set it to 128x128. If it's larger than that, set it to 256x256. Note that this last option may make your game extremely laggy. Click on Patch, it shouldn't give any errors.
3. Copy the desired e.class file into the minecraft.jar
4. Download the image you would want to use as a moon, rename it moon.png
5. Copy it into the "terrain" folder inside your minecraft.jar
6. Run Minecraft.
7. ???
8. Profit!
Note: Do NOT use the ey.class file found in some part of this thread, it doesn't work. Also, I've reuploaded the planets so you don't have to convert them to .png, just rename them. They are all back in the first post.
If my instructions aren't clear, tell me what you don't understand and I'll try to guide you.
We really need to figure out how to remove the default stars.
Once they're out of the way we can just use a really big moon.png, which is a moon AND a star background, use the modified e.class x10 to have it span the whole sky.
Hi, how do it edit the class file lines?
I just want 3x large moon not sun.
thanks!
Decompile the .class file, look at lines 597-600 for the sun and 606-609 for the moon. The standard sun has a "100.0D" in each line, the smaller you set this value, the bigger it'll get. The standard moon has "-100.0D", note that it's the same as for the sun, only negative. If you set each line for the moon to -50.0D, it'll be twice as big, if you set it -10.0D, it'll be ten times as big, etc. If you want a 3x moon and 1x sun, you'll want to set the sun values to 100.0D and the moon's -33.0D. I can't help you with recompiling, though, as my programming knowledge is fragmentary at best, more like rudimentary. If you manage to compile it, please teach me.

VOILA! Custom nighttime skybox.
The SkyMod's author was able to remove the stars, however his entire mod changes a lot more than simply that. I'm gonna tell him about this mod and see if he can include the features of this one into his, as he obviously knows more than me.
I tried my concept, random stary background + planet from google:
The transition leaves much to be desired though:
Nonetheless I think a better source picture, with perhaps a rounded star field, less dense & smaller stars, and some absolute black space between the stars (interpereted as transparant by the game) would look really nice.
Also perhaps a 20x larger moon texture and 4096x4096 moon.png.

Seems like the game simply stretches out the image in one direction. To have a custom sky you would need the image to be wrapped, i.e. distorted in the shape of a sphere, but that is well beyond what has been achieved with this mod. I think if you used a 20x expansion you would only get it to fade into the distance like the very large picture it actually is.
As for the picture, you can play a bit with the contrast and brightness to make the space between the stars almost completely black. However, I haven't tried such a huge image size, I don't know if even fixing the minecraft.jar file with xau's fix will allow you to use something like that.
I gatta question, the main problem is my folder IS edited but i dont understand how thats a problem. Its only edited to a very small extent and none of the files for this program are involved so... anyways when i do it works fine but when i try to patch it as a texture pack it just goes bck to default, is there a reason for this? i was honestly expecting it to crash or delete my texture pack so yea if it just sets the moon to default im asuming im doing it wrong. So if i have to delete my texture pack ill just make the sun/moon normal sized.
Nebulae could work well also.
