In the previous version, the black screen would be followed by Minecraft's crash reporting screen. It's just a matter of patience. If it never shows up after a couple minutes, well we're all SOL.
I got the crash screen a couple times on the day of the (first) update. I haven't had it since, just black screen forever. OK, not sure about forever, but definitely 20-30 minutes. If i can get it to spit out something, I'll be sure to post it.
EDIT: After today's bugfix updates, things seem much smoother for me. Keeping my fingers crossed here.

This mod needs to be updated. I get the black screen way too frequently and I get so frustrated re logging into the game every couple minutes. Take a look at my stats... I have more than double of anyone else who plays regularly.

Learn to read, this only worked before the Halloween update, if you are suffering from the black screen crash, simply switch to normal view distance.
