It's a mock-up in a 3D modelling program of how Minecraft might look with more modern graphics, so don't get your hopes up. I remember seeing the guy make the individual blocks.
So basically what everyone is asking for is to make certain stuff glow?
Well, I think it would work with some items (iron for example), although the bloom would have to be reasonably simple to fit in. Maybe it could be optional?

Ah I see.
I must admit, that does look rather cool. Would make traversing the dark depths that much more nerve wracking.
Stupid kids... Need dem fancy graphics or the game sucks. Sorry you grew up in the the PS2/Xbox/GC age.
Where did you read that I needed that to keep playing?
Read the topic before anything.
I personally like BLOOM effect and I would like to see anything like that implemented.
And btw my first RPG was Phantasy Star 1, in a master system ya hear me?
It still boggles me why people want to mimic the artifacts you get when you are a bad photographer and take pictures of things that are too bright. >_> It doesn't make it look more realistic IMO as my eyes don't suffer from bloom or lens flairs. If yours do, then maybe you should see a doctor. <_<
I hate bloom effects, they look horrible and it blocks your view. Honestly. Bloom sucks.

Successful troll is successful, then?
Yes, he was pretty successful. Mostly since this community is made of 12 year old kids who can't control themselves.

Don't get me started. Not that I really object to nicer graphics but they should NOT be at the cost of complexity in game play. If adding bloom support meant Notch had to take a week off working on the actual game then I'd only want it added after everything else was done.

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.
After looking at some openGL examples, I'm thinking it would be closer to an afternoon, if the the graphics code is sufficiently organized. Maybe he could even get one of his new minions to do it for him :smile.gif:
Minecraft doesn't use 3D lighting. Instead it sets the cube surface side brightness. When you put a torch on a wall a routine runs through and brightens the surfaces around it. Take any look at a picture of a torch in Minecraft and you will notice the "cube" lighting. Why did Notch do this? This "trick" allows Minecraft to simulate a huge number of light sources. The bad side to this is you can't do fancy lighting tricks like bloom, real shadows, or mobile lighting. There are some neat tricks you can still do though.

Bloom is a post-processing effect, it doesn't matter how lighting is computed. HDR bloom kind of does (actually it only relies on the lighting being recorded as HDR which can be done even for Minecraft's "cheap" lighting).

Never attribute to malice what can adequately be explained by incompetence.

Wow, that's some nice piece of information right there.
This is really unfair.
I grew up in the SNES age, but I can still appreciate if a game looks good.
My first console was the Intellevision, my first computer was a TRS80 CoCo (didn't even have a disk drive, commercial software came on cassette tape or cartridge). I'm in the same boat.. Good graphics aren't necessary, but they're still appreciated.
Although he really can't improve the lighting unless he reworks it drastically. OpenGL only supports a max of 8 lights. So he'd need to do something like fake the lighting for all but the 8 closest torches to the player, which would probably look like ****.

Bloom just is a post-processing effect. It doesn't matter what lighting method is used. If you look here you can see that the lighting method plays a small part in the HDR process. This means we could have HDR in static images!
If minecraft was to use DX9 or higher, we could inject ENB series into it, which would allow for bloom lighting aswell as other shaders such as DoF and motion blur. But since we are using OpenGL, no dice I'm affraid.

Btw, what game IS that?

Infiniminer. Predates Minecraft. A lot of people think it's where the idea for MC came from actually.
I say stuff here and here
It's because Notch has said Infiniminer was his inspiration on the about page on minecraft.net.
Where did you read that I needed that to keep playing?

And this is coming from someone who believes the game should stay very simple and have textures no larger than 32x32 (though the 16x16 is preferred).
It doesn't all have to be awful. Some games do it really well. Minecraft could be one of those.
Not infiniminer... this one here.
:tongue.gif:
Unless that is infiniminer...
