I feel I should mention that 7-zip is a completely free alternative to WinRAR.
(To use it after installing, right click the minecraft.jar then select Z-zip -> open archive. After that right-click drag the files you want to replace into the appropriate location in the minecraft.jar file.)

Did you install the right one? If you installed 32 bit, try installing 64 bit
