I also am having problems with the sound completely dropping out when playing the edited sounds.
To explain, when do something that would play one of the sounds I changed, it won't play that sound. Instead, it kills all sound from the game. Music, monsters, me, everything. The only way to get sounds back is to restart Minecraft. But it will still kill all sounds unless I remove the "DO_NOT_UPDATE" file and let it overwrite the edited sounds with the original. I even deleted the .minecraft folder and let the client re-download everything, and it still doesn't work.
This is the only mod I'm using, or trying to use.
The thing is, it worked like a champ before, and when it stopped working, I though it was because of me changing codec packs, but when I reverted back, (the codec pack screwed up the playing of .ogg files using media players) my problem with this mod persisted.
Do u know what I think? Notch makes little, secret and not in the Version number seeable updates, which will be downloaded while playing. I think this is it... So he can deactivate all this cool mods and so, to get it back on the finished Minecraft version (look to his blog http://notch.tumblr.com) ...
For some reason it just kills all sounds in minecraft when the new sound is triggered. You have to restart minecraft for the sounds to work. If the custom sound is played it will remove all sound again. I tried with DO_NOT_UPDATE.txt and with no extension, it doesn't work. I was trying to change the bow sound but now whenever a someone fires a bow it glitches.

I am still having the same problem as before. The poster I quoted describes my problem using less words that I did, with the exception that when I first found this mod, it worked fine.
Would either one of you mind sending me one of the sound files you're using so I can test?
Here is a Mediafire link of the sound I use to replace hurt.ogg. It is the sound of Mario from Super Mario 64 getting hurt. I use this sound to test whether or not the mod works.
EDIT: I was also wondering if it had anything to do with codecs. That is when the mod stopped working for me, was when I switched from CCCP to another codec pack, it's name I can't remember. But my problem persisted when I switched back to the CCCP. I even did a system restore to the point before I installed the other pack, and it still didn't solve my problem. Your help is appreciated, and I'm glad to help in any way I can.
Thanks to both of you for the sound files. I'll test ASAP.

It could be. The thing is, this mod doesn't actually touch the sound system. All it really does is stop Minecraft from downloading the default /resources/ files. It's basically:
if DO_NOT_UPDATE.txt is present:
skip downloading
else
download default resource files
Yeah, like I thought. The hurt.ogg file you uploaded, Johnburt3rd, is corrupt. When I used it, the sound thread threw an exception and stopped working. Here's a fixed version of your hurt.ogg that works.
blady20, your link isn't working, but I'm guessing you have the same problem.

Your solution worked wonderfully. Thank you.
My next question is, how can I test to see if an .ogg file is corrupt before I plug it in Minecraft and how can I fix it on my own?

I guess just try to use a different program to transcode the files. I only use vorbis-tools on Linux, so I can't recommend anything for other OSs.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try to see if there is a difference between using Audacity and Format Factory.
EDIT: I guess it would help to add that I was able to play the old hurt.ogg file using a two different media players. That is why I didn't suspect the file itself was the problem.
EDIT 2: It seems using Format Factory to convert a file renders that file unusable in Minecraft. However, opening a file in Audacity, then exporting the project as Ogg Vorbis seems to work. Thank you again for making this mod.
PS: If you really want to scare yourself, find a sound clip of a Heaven Smile from Killer7 laughing and make that one of the ambient sounds.
Is it possible to add music with this? Like, not getting rid of any music files and just putting more in the folder? If I put in more, will the music play in the game?

I am also on a Windows XP Pro. I used Format Factory to convert a WAV version of the sound to OGG.

Yep, same problem. Here's a fixed version of bow.ogg.

No. For that you need Risugami's AudioMod.
Also, I'm moving all my mods to one thread located here. Please use that thread instead of this one from now on.
