If you’ve bought the game, you can do pretty much anything, but there’s one major rule:
Do not distribute anything I’ve made, or modified versions of anything I’ve made. I want all client and server downloads to come from minecraft.net.
I don’t wish to lose control of this project, and definitely not before it’s been finished.
As pointed out on irc, this clashes a bit with modding support at the moment, but some kind of server api is planned and coming sooner or later when I feel better.
So keep in mind that distributing [modified] clients and servers not only is illegal, it’s against my wishes.
This said, if you write a custom server and let people play on it, that’s very cool and just adds content to the game. =D
Feel free to explain how to do it, much like Zuriki does in her skins thread but you're not allowed to link to a downloadable version of the server :smile.gif:
I don't get it... all you've done is change one solid material with the same properties to another solid material. I mean, modifications like a lava sponge or something for the client make sense. But I just don't really see a point for this...
If you want to clear the lava out of a cave, you can simply flood it with water, delete all the glass, then sponge out the water.
Also, if a lava room of yours gets flooded, it's easy to see where the lava is/was.
Adding a lava sponge would either mean making the sponge repel both (which would break some existing setups) or adding a new block type, requiring a custom client to use it.

Or editing one of the existing classes and writing a tutorial on how to set it up.
Now, that was a way of making a server I didn't think of.
Anyway. Thought about doing this with reflection to improve the legality?
EDIT:
I also suggest making mushrooms live w/o sunlight if you can.

I disagree with you, therefore you are wrong.
Quality of output = Skill * Effort
I'm pretty sure the server can teleport clients around. (admin /teleport command, for example)
But it would be rather difficult to do for other reasons. (kinda hard to do complicated stuff by editing bytecode)
Water going through plants isn't easy even for Notch. Only one type of block can inhabit each space.
Plant nolight hack would probably be fairly simple to do. I'm kinda busy at the moment though.
A server mod that will create glass instead of stone when water and lava touch. Handy for cleaning up lava, among other things.
I've removed the download link since it's outdated anyways. I'm not going to be releasing it for newer server versions. (at least not here.)

How is that conceptually different from what I said?
What I posted is a server-side mod.

I might look into the mushrooms later.
Also mushrooms sound nice, GIVE US SHROOMS.... that dont require sunlight, or soil.
Arsecraft minecraft server, minecrafting since the very beggining.
Those are in survival, will probably come to sandbox later on.
also, water should be able to seep through bushes, and you should try making teleport blocks. =D
Blarg that would take crap lots of work, and also you would need a client to support it (psssst ask notch :"P)
buuut making plants live without water can be done ( infact i have seen it done)
