The client processes the physics of the player, i.e. water makes you wet and swimmy. The server processes the map blocks, i.e. grass decides to spread to the dirt block next to it.
I would LOVE to have this. As a person who runs a server, this gives me so much freedom. OME is glitchy, but all other editors are crap. This would allow small edits without a map editor. :biggrin.gif:
That's quite the piece of engineering. I can't imagine how long it took to decipher how server and client communicate. But to build upon those and add features even Notch didn't intend to have in for some time (or at all) is brilliant.
Kudos to you JTE. I gave you a custom title for the occasion, if you want to change it just report this post and leave a message to what you want to change it to. :]
Thank you Zuriki. :biggrin.gif: I might not have gotten as far without the help and encouragement of at least two of my friends, though. When I got here, my work was already cut out for me; All that I needed to do was a whole lot of experimentation and roughly 2300 lines of code. (and counting). Things are looking up. :smile.gif:
And yay, a random screenshot of me in the middle of saying something or other to a colorful pyramid with a sponge base. Awesome.
* I heard someone built a chess/checkers board out of blocks, and I can totally program the server to help you follow the rules when playing something like that. It would go similar to: Break a block to "pick it up", and it hovers a block or two in the air above all of the places it can move, and you break one of those blocks to put it down there again. The server can even keep track of which pieces get taken and who wins.
Wonderful, I could use it to prevent cheaters and such. Though, in my various tests with it, the participants in it already know their turns by memory, but it's always good to keep a reminder with you. Also, Connect 4. *hint* *hint*
Hehe, connect 4 would work wonderfully too. Any board game or strategy game could work, actually... Probably even games in which everyone sees a different 'board', ex. due to "fog of war", since I have control over all network transmissions... Just build me a board and tell me how the pieces move, I guess.

I've been told a few times before I should make other kinds of unbreakable blocks, but I am at a loss for how I can make them look different from normal blocks or otherwise differentiate them. At least the admins should be able to tell, even if it's invisible to the normal users...
He should NEVER release it to the public. A lot of servers will turn to crap, because lava and water will be everywhere. Only send it to trusted people.
Since you have complete control over network transmissions, anyone for a game of INFECTION :biggrin.gif:
It could work I think.
Spawn everyone in a lobby type area,
Upon starting the game set one player as the Zombie (notify in chat that they are a zombie)
Spawn everyone in random places on the map (or group humans together and spawn the Zombie elsewhere).
Test to see if Zombie/Human are in the same location (within a certain radius).
If they are > set name as zombie (to change the skin to zombie.png (I'll ask notch to create a pay-for account with a Zombie.png skin)) and respawn them (maybe in the original zombie spawn)
Last Man Standing is the winner OR
Last Man Standing has their suvival time recorded and sent to a highscores list?

How does that sound? Is it doable?
Map editors can do that.
As long as you make OP choices carefully, that really isn't the issue.
Quality of output = Skill * Effort
Yeah, but it is a lot more difficult. If you can just place it, it could destroy a map in seconds.
