I unzipped the .jar files and find a bunch of nonsense class names with nonsense variables. I am seeing some stuff about forge src or something that has all the correct names but I have no idea how to access that. Any help?
You need to download the Forge MDK (mod development kit, lower right corner of the download areas), which will decompile and deobfuscate the game into human-readable Java source code (although if you want full access to the source and not just develop Forge mods you need Mod Coder Pack, which is only available for 1.12 and earlier; Forge does let you view the source, but not edit it directly; if you want to change vanilla code this thread describes how to do so, though it is probably outdated).

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
