I'm using eclipse. By setup I mean I got 1.7.10 src, I setup the paths and jdk. I am following a guide and I was able to code two separate blocks in to the mod and an item.

in method "public void preInit(FMLInitializationEvent event)"
You're setting it as a new variable instead of the field in the class, which you reference down below in method "public void init(FMLInitializationEvent event)".
You want your ORIGINAL object that is registered, to be used for everything else. Not a new instance of it.
Something like:
public class Ex {
public static String example;
public void init() {
Ex.example = "This is an example."
}
public void postInit() {
if (Ex.example != null) {
//Was set
} else {
//Was not set
}
}

You're setting it as a new variable instead of the field in the class, which you reference down below in method "public void init(FMLInitializationEvent event)".
