I'm using Eclipse with a bunch of imported stuff ready to go to work on 1.12.2 using Forge for modding, but I'm not fully familiar with what the capabilities are here.
I'm new to the world of MC modding but I want to make a block emit an aura that can be toggled on and off on client side for individual players, but otherwise always emitting the aura server-side. The context is to have it serve as a beacon for demonstrating the "borders" of someone's city. So they place this block and it makes a clear aura, maybe coloring the outermost ring of blocks 75 blocks away from this "border block" in each direction. So someone approaching the city would see this kind of aura/maybe force field and know they're coming up on someone's city. For aesthetic acceptability, I want players to be able to toggle this aura off for themselves when they know they are already within or approaching borders, but I can do without the toggle if it's not possible or particularly difficult.
At the very least, how can I make a block do this visual effect, especially when it will likely be several chunks away from its source? I presume some large-scale chunkloading will be necessary, but I think the server can handle it.
So far, I've been able to make the new block and it shows up in-game, textured and all. I was able to make a recipe for it, so it's usable. I just need it to make the effect now.
I'm not asking for someone to do it for me, but I would appreciate some direction on how to get this done. I'd like to mention I have very little coding experience with Java, and minimal with other languages. So forgive me if something clear doesn't make sense to me right away. All the best!
