For everyone reading this, how can you make when you are breaking a block and it hurts while you are mining it with your bare hands? Thanks for those who read and solved.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm fairly sure taking damage restarts the mining process, making something along these lines very hard to accomplish.

No you can still continue to mine (without a knockback) a block while taking damage so it is possible.
this will call the damage function once, maybe have it "poison" the player oninteract and continually check to see if they are still interacting to continue the poison damage...

Doesn't work. While punching a tree (testing codes in wood) still don't give me damage.
btw, here's the code I put:
