Okay so, a couple years ago I created a modpack on MultiMC for Minecraft 1.7.10. Here are the list of mods in my modpack:
Aether 2
Aquaculture
Atum: Journey Into the Sands
Better FPS
CandyCraft
CloneCraft
ComputerCraft
Copious Dogs
Elemental Creepers
Flans Mods
Flans Modern Warfare Pack
Flans WW2 Pack
Flans Ye Olde Pack
Gems+
Hats
Iron Chest
Ice Cream Creepers
Lumy Skin Patch
Malisis Doors
Metallurgy 3
Mo Golems
Mr Crayfish Furniture
Not Enough Items
Project Fruit
Project E
Psychedelicraft
Q-Craft
Rei's Mini Map
Sports Mod
Statues Mod
TrainCraft
Tube Transportation
Twilight Forest
Vending Machine
Web Displays
(Plus the compatibility mods that require these mods to work. So in total 47 mods all together).
I am also planning on adding a couple more mods in the near future.
I never really had a problem with this but even when I have 5.1 GB of RAM allocated to this modpack, I usually still get lag spikes specifically when I explore new chunks (and enter the Nether). I was just wondering if I should allocate more?
Here are my current PC specs:
CPU: Intel Core I5 2500 3.3 GHz
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1660
RAM: 16 GB ddr3 1333MHz (5.1 GB allocated to the modpack)
I used to play my modpack using that amount (2-4 GB), however I kept getting lag spikes quite frequently. So I increased it to 5.1 GB, to which I still get lag spikes (not as much though) in some instances, such as exploring new chunks.
I was wondering if it's my CPU? (If I should get a newer/better one?)
It says "The minimum system requirements for “vanilla” Minecraft* (that is, completely unmodded) is 4GB of RAM, but players who use mods routinely allocate 6GB or more to keep the game running properly. If you’re planning on heavily modding Minecraft, 8GB of RAM is a good place to start, with more being better. This 8GB of RAM minimum is an excellent baseline for any modern gaming experience."
I was just wondering if this would be a wise decision for my 1.7.10 modpack.
Also is it possible that any applications that require a lot of RAM (such as Opera) running in the background cause any lag spikes in my current game? Since I do tend to leave videos on YouTube whilst I play games.
Ah I'll have to check back on you on that, the next time I go on my PC. How do I know whether my RAM is ddr3 or ddr4? Would applications such as CPU-Z show me?
Also, how many mods do you have installed on your modpack?

I dont remember exactly how many however I do know that the modpack is about guns, machines, tanks. so they are quite a few but not too demanding. I think you should try allocating 4-6 gb of ram for better results
Ah I see, thanks. Out of curiosity (And since I'm quite new to this), considering the performance differences between ddr3 and ddr4 ram. Would 8GB of allocated ram with ddr3 be the equivalent to 4GB allocated with ddr4? Or would their still be certain differences, performance wise.

Well recently I tried to play minecraft on my laptop which has 4gb of ddr3 ram and it was nearly unplayable (barely 50-60fps on lowest settings and it allocated 2 gb of ram). Around 2016-2017 my fps could reach as high as 300-400 but now it simply can't because of many updates. Some say that bedrock is better optimized since it wasn't built in java so you can always give a try. I would consider upgrading to ddr4 in any case or try to get it when prices are low and not like me who was forced to buy it when it was x2.5 the price. I don't think it would be equivalent to 4 GB but I know that with 8 Gb of ddr4 ram you can play without any problems (even modded versions). I am going to fix my old PC this week so I will let you know how that turns and will I be able to maintain somehow playable FPS
Ah I see, so is allocating 8GB of ddr3 better than allocating 4GB of ddr4? And yes I was planning on replacing the ddr3 RAM I have already in the near future with ddr4. I was wondering if Amazon was a good place to get RAM? Because I found a few 2x8GB sticks of ddr4 that falls within my price range. Or is there any better options as to where I can get RAM from? My FPS on my Minecraft 1.7.10 modpack varies on what I am doing. Say if I am in my base (which is in a mountain) my fps is usually between 100-200fps (sometimes more than 200fps). When I am outside exploring new chunks, it usually falls between 80-130 range. And when I am in a superflat world, it's 200-300fps. I never really had issues with lag spikes in the overworld before. I mean I first created my modpack nearly 3 years ago. My specs back then weren't as good considering this was before I upgraded them to what they are now. I used to have a Nvidia Geforce GTX 460 and 8GB of RAM (5.1GB allocated) and even then I don't really remember their being any major lag issues, especially in the overworld. I did take a long hiatus though from playing my modpack (my PC in general actually) for about a year and a half so perhaps I forgot how it ran. Who knows. But anywho, if it means to help the performance for my modpack (that I worked so hard on) than yes, I will definitely get 16GB of the ddr4 RAM to replace the 16GB of drr3 I already have.
I was also wondering if replacing my 16GB of ddr3 with 16GB of ddr4 would make a substantial difference in performance with games such as Minecraft and other games? Also when I do replace my RAM, would I have to reset my Windows? or install any updates? Or am I all set?

Ingame press F3 and add a screenshot of it
I allocated 2 GB for one modpack so I think maybe 2-4GB would be enough in your case. I am also using 1.7.10 for mods
I used to play my modpack using that amount (2-4 GB), however I kept getting lag spikes quite frequently. So I increased it to 5.1 GB, to which I still get lag spikes (not as much though) in some instances, such as exploring new chunks.

Ah okay, should I screenshot it at the moments when I do get the lag spikes? Or should I just screenshot it regardless?
You can add both
I also wanna point out I came across this site that mentioned how much RAM you should allocate to vanilla Minecraft and modded Minecraft:
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/gaming/resources/mods.html
It says "The minimum system requirements for “vanilla” Minecraft* (that is, completely unmodded) is 4GB of RAM, but players who use mods routinely allocate 6GB or more to keep the game running properly. I think it also depends on speed of RAM and whether it's ddr3 or ddr4 because I am running on 2GB smoothly and I use ddr4 2400 MHz
Ah I'll have to check back on you on that, the next time I go on my PC. How do I know whether my RAM is ddr3 or ddr4? Would applications such as CPU-Z show me?
Also, how many mods do you have installed on your modpack?
EDIT: My RAM is indeed ddr3 1333MHz
