I'm new to this forum site and a returning player to minecraft after 10 or so years. When I first played I never delved into any mods or texture packs at all, but now I am itching to get going.
I've just finished watching the yogscast series about the jaffa factory and thought the texture pack and the automation mods looked pretty cool to have a go with, but I'm struggling with understanding the differences between them. My question to you all:
* what is the difference between mods and the resource pack folder? Are they different things and can you use any texture pack with any mod if they are different things?
* tekkit seems really cool, but is this a singular mod or lots of mods in one place? I have seen the terms forge and buildcraft thrown around, but is this different to tekkit?
* I would love to have the texture pack they used in the jaffa factory series (where the inventory boxes are all at angles and looks cartoony. Does anyone know what this is called?
* I'm aware the jaffa factory series was cut short due to a mod being upadated and made the factory unusable, but is there a mod out there in todays minecraft where I can still play about with quarries and energy condensors ect, ect?
Hopefully I've not broken any forum rules. Thank you.
1. A mod modifies the game mechanics, or adds new mechanics, like ore doubling. A resource pack changes the textures and looks of the game. They are different files and go into diff folders.
2. Tekkit is a modpack. It contains several mods. Forge is the mod that allows other mods to run in MC.
1.Mods add many things. From tweaks to the game (making crafting easier, improving sprinting) to adding in new dimensions, machines, mobs, tools/weapons/armour, food and so much it's hard to keep track. Also as many modloaders exist (the means to add a mod layer to Minecraft to make mods work) it can get confusing whether your new to mods or a veteran as things change like mods available for new versions or modloaders that stay around for a while then a new one comes along.
You can either try modpacks or install mods yourself, to install a modpack you will need a launcher to get started. You can try some like Twitch or Technic (the one Tekkit is for) or some like FTB and ATLauncher. Modpack are collections of mods and must be downloaded or imported through a Modpack launcher, they don't work with the Vanilla/Mojang launcher. If you want to create your own using the Mojang launcher, Twitch or MultiMC are good options to go with for installing Forge and other modloaders.
Resource packs (Release 1.6 onwards)/texture packs (1.5.2 and back to when Texture packs were created) are a way to change the textures of the game, add custom sounds and more, there is resource packs that are realistic, cartoony, rustic, weird. Resource packs can be applied to mods but it can be tricky and mostly the popular resource packs have them like BDCraft, Soartex Fanever and a few others.
The way to install a resource pack you want to try out is to find the .minecraft folder at %appdata% then go to 'resource pack', then once you load up the game and to the 'resource pack' button in the options menu you can just add it and the textures will change out (or if via a modpack launcher just select the open folder option in the launcher for that modpack and put the resource pack in the 'resource pack' folder).
If you want a website to get mods, modpacks or resource packs easy go to Curseforge as it's the safest I know of to get this stuff, Planet Minecraft is a close second. You can get them from creator's websites too but sometimes they are safe, other times you have to go through ad sites and they can be annoying to deal with.
When it comes to modpack launchers those, just go to the Technic, FTB or AT Launcher websites to get the launcher and the modpack downloading is all through the menus. As you want the Tekkit modpack you'll want the Technic launcher from here: https://www.technicpack.net/download if you want to get Tekkit Classic you can just copy the URL for the modpack here https://www.technicpack.net/modpack/tekkit.552560 and paste it in the launcher's search bar once you have install the Technic launcher
2.Tekkit was a popular modpack back during 1.2.5 and 1.4.7 (I remember Jaffa Factory being around that same time). Modpacks are a collection of mods, hence 'mod pack'. Tekkit had many of the popular tech and magic mods of that era, many of them are still available in 1.12.2, not so much 1.15.2 however. You can still try out Tekkit from the Technic launcher, I have and it worked out fine, but it is can be awkward at times, it is trying to run a 1.2.5 modpack and 1.2.5 came about in 2013 I think so it's doing it's best to repeat what it can back then.
You will notice many modloaders, while this shouldn't matter for modpacks too much it is important to know. Forge is the most common and has the coolest mods/most mods for it. But some like Liteloader and Fabric exist, you'll encounter these in 1.12.2 or 1.14.4+ versions of the game alongside Forge, but for 1.2.5 you'll only need to worry about Forge (while there was Risugam's modloader the modpacks with mods that worked for Forge & Modloader work out alright due to how they are put together unlike so it shouldn't matter as much.
3.Majestyc2k1 put the link so I won't repeat.
4.Many mods were in the pack at the time, the quarry was from BuildCraft, but you can find mods that add just a quarry as a standalone mod. The macerator and others are from Industrial Craft 2, the EMC/diamond duplication was from Equivalent Exchange 2 but that mod isn't continued (EE2 and EE3), there is a revival of it called Project E however that keeps that version of EE2. Many of these are for 1.12.2 the most recent/popular if you don't count 1.13+ which some mods have made the jump but others haven't as 1.13+ of Forge changed quite a bit so it's tough for developers to update their mods further. There is mods that add few blocks and items or are as big as you'd expect with the quarry, pipes to transport Items, Fluids, & Power, machines to double metals,, you can make a modpack with as few or as many mods or things in it as possible once you know how to mod the game and balance mods out appropriately so you can run it.
Welcome to the modding community, sorry if I went a bit overboard, but just thought you'd want to know, if it was a bit confusing I apologise, If you want to know where to get started best to look around the forums or at modpack Youtube videos as starting points and watching mod spotlights if your after how something works from a particular mod. I find these works if Let's Plays of modpack don't make things as clear.

3. BDCraft https://bdcraft.net/
4. It depends on the version of MC you want to play. Buildcraft is updated to 1.12.2.
Hope this helps.
