One thing you might be doing is trying to use it with minecraft 1.8.9 - Only 1.8.8 and 1.8 are supported. (1.8.8 and 1.8 can connect to 1.8.9 servers).
If you do want to use it with optifine, you'll need to install optifine for 1.8 and liteloader for 1.8, and then use the 1.8 liteloader version. Eventually, there will be a 1.8.8 liteloader version, but it's not out yet (because liteloader hasn't been updated to 1.8.8 yet).

I use Optifine for MC 1.8.8 only so that's definitely not the reason.
Can you open F3 and post the first line of text in it (the one that starts with "Minecraft")?
Also, you do have liteloader installed if you're using the liteloader version, right? To check, there should be a tab on the right of the pause menu.

FYI: I have Liteloader version 1.8.8 ready, however it uses a hacked-up version of Liteloader, and last time I released a hacked-up version of Liteloader, Mumfrey got pîssed off.
I'll be releasing my version after Mumfrey updates on git :-)
Most likely, you're on the wrong launcher profile, or didn't switch your minecraft version. You can switch with the profile selector:
Select "Edit profile" and then make sure the version is the version you created for WDL. Or create a new profile for that version and switch to it.
Nice!

No, I did.
What did you name the version? (Assuming you did a coremod install). If you did a litemod install, you definitely aren't on the right profile (liteloader's not there).

I tried both.
OK, can you take a screenshot of the "Edit profile" screen? And also the versions folder in .minecraft?

Right, I see what your mistake is (and it's a relatively simple one).
If you directly put a mod inside of 1.8.8.jar, it won't work - the "new" launcher overrides that file if it seems like it's modified. That's why most loaders create the extra version folder. You'll need to copy the 1.8.8 folder and rename it to "1.8.8-WorldDownloader", and then do the same with 1.8.8.json and 1.8.8.jar inside of that folder. Then, you'll need to open 1.8.8-WorldDownloader.json and change " "id": "1.8.8" " to " "id": "1.8.8-WorldDownloader" ". After doing that you should be able to put the contents of the World Downloader zip in the jar and delete meta-inf, and then the mod will load. (You'll need to set the right version for that profile, of course)
For liteloader (which it looks like you also tried to use), make sure that you have the mod in the mods folder.

Oh, I can't believe I didn't realize that... thanks!
I've been having some issues using worlddownloader on a server recently. It seems that when the map is saved the blocks get changed around somehow. Is there a way for server admins to block WD from working by randomizing block ids? The server is modded and uses underground biomes which replaces all default stone with it's own versions of different kinds. When saving the map everything looks fine until I go to load into it in singleplayer and that's when things go bad. I can usually load in for a few seconds before I crash. The logs looks like the blocks are being changed to trapdoors and other things which I guess would explain why it's crashing trying to render a million trapdoor block updates at once. Also I notice things in my inventory are also changed around to different items.
I've posted my full log below. You can see that I saved the map with looks to be no errors, and then I load said world into singleplayer which crashes.
Not sure if you can actually help with this or not but I figured I'd post a log and see. It should also be noted that I've used this successfully before on this server, and in my own test worlds as well with no issues. It's just recently that this server has crapped the bed.
Thanks
Crash Log
Did the server update its mods recently or add some new ones? Forge's block ID tables aren't saved (yet) although it should be possible to save them in future versions. In other words, Forge has no idea what the actual block is and instead tries to guess, often with success but for older servers it may fail.
I'll actually probably want to put out a release pretty soon with it. In the mean time, there's probably not that much that can be done to fix it... I suppose you could manually create the world info NBT, but given the number of mods there, that may be difficult. I've worked with the forge ID table before for an unrelated project; maybe I can make that project create the needed file for the moment.

Ok thanks. I do believe some mods were updated but I'm not sure which ones. I'll just wait patiently for an update whenever you get around to it.
Finally, 1.8d is released! A bunch of changes to GUIs, an API, the ability to add foreign language translations, and several other things have been added. This has been nearly 6 months in the making...
Note that the API is still a work in progress, and there isn't anything using it yet. But it will be used to handle additional mods (most notably, forge data WILL be saved). I'll edit this release once the forge support extension is released.
I've got 4 releases: 1.8.9a-beta1, 1.8.8a-beta3, 1.7.10c-beta1, and most importanty, 1.8d-beta1.
Changes:
Expect some API docs to be put up sooner or later. Also, note that while this will allow forge use, forge isn't quite ready yet.
