The Ore Dowsing mod provides items called Dowsing Rods which can help find ores and other blocks. When you right-click with a Dowsing Rod it highlights ores which it finds in a cube around you (sized from 9x9x9 to 17x17x17 depending on the tier). Which ores it highlights is also dependent on the tier.
The highest-tier rod (diamond) can also be set to target a specific ore of your choice, or even non-ores. This can be used for various cheaty and non-cheaty tasks, such as finding chests in a mine or stronghold, or highlighting a pipe system in your base.

Excellent, thanks for that! I will have to move localization to the top of the to-do list.
BTW I've been working on it a bit more and I'm getting a version ready which gives each ore its own color outline, very handy with the "detect all ores" setting of the diamond dowsing rod.
You can already detect modded ores, anything ore-like registered in the ore dictionary should work.
I also set up colors for a bunch of common ores (certus, copper, lead, mithril, nickel (ferrous), osmium, platinum (shiny), silver, tin, and all the Thaumcraft ores). I thought about tackling Metallurgy but I was daunted.
Version 0.6 fixes yet another server-side crash ("NoClassDefFoundError: org/lwjgl/input/Keyboard"). On the up-side my testing methodology is improving!
There are releases of 0.6 for both 1.8 and 1.7.10.
I recommend nerfing' it a bit, maybe reducing durability and/or range possibly? And to be honest, it would be nice to make it so that the ores weren't outlined with color, that way it wouldn't be as abusive. One last thing, is it possible to make CoFH core optional for 1.7.10, not everyone wants to use RF to power it. But other than those things, its great!
I'm working on a version which will make these things and more changeable via a config file. The Beyond Reality Divergence guys were looking for some similar control.
I've uploaded the 1.7.10 part of version 0.7. This includes a config file which can control almost everything about the mod, and it removes the dependency on CoFHLib. The Minecraft 1.8 release for the 0.7 version is in the works.
I've uploaded the Minecraft 1.8 jar for version 0.7. Same changes as for 1.7.10, primarily a config file which can control almost all aspects of the mod.

Mod packs:
You are welcome to include the mod in your mod pack. You don't need to ask me. Attribution is always appreciated.

I've released version 0.2 of the mod. Ores are now colored according to their type, so you can pick things out when using the Diamond Dowsing Rod:
Here you can see coal, iron, redstone, lapis, gold, and diamond ores.
Requirements are the same as before.

This is a cool mod though I'm not liking the textures too much but it is a good idea keep up the good work man
Thanks. I don't like the textures either :-), making sprites is not my forte. If anybody wanted to supply something better I'd love to use it.
Neat, I was wondering will you be able to detect ores outside of vanilla minecraft later that would be cool.
In my opinion, it may be likely, but I fear colors may have to be done by hand, via an API. But I'm not the mod owner.

I've just uploaded version 0.3 of the Ore Dowsing mod.
This version adds colors for nether ores and the ability to upgrade the range of the Diamond Dowsing Rod by adding more diamonds to it.
I've uploaded version 0.4 of the Ore Dowsing mod.
This version fixes a crash which happened when playing on a server.
Version 0.5 is done and uploaded.
This version updates the mod for Minecraft 1.8. It also removes the dependency on CoFHLib.
Version 0.6 fixes yet another server-side crash ("NoClassDefFoundError: org/lwjgl/input/Keyboard"). On the up-side my testing methodology is improving!
There are releases of 0.6 for both 1.8 and 1.7.10.
The next release should include a config file.
I'd be more than happy to help you make textures for your mod, if your fine with that, I'll get to it!

That would be great, thank you!

Thank you, these are great! I'll get a release together which includes them soon. I'm also working on a few bugs.
