A Forge mod for Minecraft 1.9 (Compatible with "Biomes O' Plenty" since Minecraft-Forge 1.8.0)
Because you won't find "stone" in a geology textbook.
Summary
The Minecraft Mineralogy mod replaces the generic underground stone with real-world examples. The underground world has geological "biomes" of either sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic rocks. Most of the new rocks can be crafted into polished versions by crafting 4 blocks of the same rock in a crafting grid.
v2.5.1
- added config option to disable gravel smelting v2.5.0
- added a bunch of new config options so you can change which blocks spawn as rock layers
- fixed a bug that caused a crash when you interact with half-slabs
- added chert to the creative tabs
- made gypsum spawn as ores instead of as layers
- updated sulfur and nitrate textures (there's also a new texture pack) v2.4.1
- fixed graphics bug that caused ugly shadows to appear on stairs v2.4.0
- Bug fixes and added a new sedimentary block
- Improved ore textures (I hope they look better than before)
- Updated textures to be compatible with my new Base Metals mod. v2.3.0
- Added stairs and slabs for (nearly) all types of stone!
- Fixed a bug causing multiplication of chert blocks
- Added German language translation v2.2.4
- Fixed the appearance of drywall so the corners don't look so ugly anymore. v2.2.3
- Fixed the appearance of strange lines across the landscape (for-real this time)
- Added more sanity to crafting recipes. Previously, some rocks were considered "stone" and some were considered "cobblestone". Now, all rocks are equivalent to cobblestone and can be smelted into stone. Also, all rock types, including chert, can now be crafted into vanilla cobblestone (2 rocks + 2 gravel = 4 cobblestone). v2.2.2
- Added translations for English, Spanish, and Chinese
- Fixed the gravel to stone smelting recipe
- Made the rock+gravel=cobblestone recipe apply to more types of rock
- Made some terrain-generation parameters customizable in the config file v2.2.1
- Updated to Forge build 11.14.0.1252, which has fixed the bug that caused the dry wall (and all pane-type blocks) to render incorrectly. v2.2.0
- Updated to be a Forge mod instead of an FML mod. Note that there's currently a bug in Forge that makes all pane-type block connect in the wrong direction. v2.01
- In this version, I fixed the bugs preventing it from running on a server.

This mod is open source. You may include it in your mod packs, but remember to give credit to me (Cyanobacterium aka Dr. Cyano aka Synechocystis).
Crafting Recipes and Items:
Stone and Cobblestone
The new rock types can be used in the place of stone and cobblestone in vanilla Minecraft recipes.
If you need cobblestone, use this recipe (or you could make a cobblestone generator using lava and water): craft 2 gravel blocks + 2 rock blocks = 4 cobblestone blocks
You can now smelt gravel directly into "stone" blocks.
Stairs and Half-Slabs
All rock types that have polished versions can be crafted into stairs and slabs (the polished blocks can also be made into stairs). Stacking polished slabs on top of each other makes for nice stone columns.
Drywall:
These panels are crafted from gypsum and paper and can be colored like wool.
Mineral Fertilizer:
Mineral fertilizer is even better than bonemeal for growing crops because a single use fertilizes a 3x3 area. 1 Saltpeter + 1 Phosphorous = 1 Mineral Fertilizer

What will happen if a mod requires the minecraft stone or other stuff in the ground from vanilla minecraft to craft stuff?
If another mod requires cobblestone or stone, but uses a Forge feature called the "OreDictionary", then the stones from Mineralogy will work just fine. However, if the other mod does not use the OreDictionary, then you will have to craft cobblestone (2 Mineralogy stone blocks + 2 gravel blocks) or smelt gravel into stone.
Note: All of the Minecraft ores from Vanilla and other mods will spawn as normal (only stone blocks are replaced). I have tested this mod with the Metallurgy mod to confirm this. There are no ores in the screenshot because I removed them for the example.

This does not work with ATG worlds. Just thought I would put that out there . Wish it did though because I was going to use the to replace undergroundbiomes.

Good to know. Thanks for reporting the incompatibility.
Minecraft Mineralogy replaces the default overworld terrain generator and there can be only one terrain generator per dimension (I tried doing stone replacement after terrain generation, but it took literally minutes to process the terrain). Therefore, other mods that also replace the overworld terrain generator will not be compatible.

I was able to update this mod to 1.8 using Forge-Mod-Loader. Unfortunately, since the Forge API itself has not yet been updated, I cannot use the Ore Dictionary and therefore the recipes will be less compatible with other mods than it is in the 1.7.10 version (not that there are many 1.8 mods to be compatible with).

I'm using Tinker's Construct and the different stone doesn't seem to work with that for making stone tool parts (I'm playing 1.7.10) but with the regular crafting it works fine.
I'm having a lot of fun with this. I found some Chert and it's really pretty but it's not polishable? I looked it up and it said something about fossils... is there a way to get like bones or something from it? Or is this one of those things where you just smile and shrug and I get to figure that out myself? lol
I didn't have a polished version of chert because I couldn't find any real-life photos of polished chert tiles (it's the same type of rock as flint, so I think it fragments too easily).
Occasionally finding fossils in sedimentary rocks is a really cool idea! Would the fossils just be bones or should I add a new item for that?

I added a link to Overlord Attack-of-the-Dirt's 1.8 Mod List for anyone looking to combine my mod with others. Someone should make an Early Adopter's mod-pack of 1.8 FML mods for people who don't want to wait for the Forge API rewrite.

Oops, I forgot to test the 1.8 version on a server. I'll look into that when I get a chance.
I don't know if it will work with Geologica, but here's some insight: In the 1.7 version, Mineralogy replaces the world generator to use the mineralogy rocks instead of stone. In the 1.8 version, the stone is replaced with rocks after the terrain is generated, without changing the world generator (I wanted to do it that way in 1.7, but the performance sucked). So if Geologica is a 1.7 mod and it also replaces the default world generator, then it won't be compatible, but if Geologica modifies the terrain post-gen (the way villages spawn), then you're in the clear. I'd really appreciate it if you could test it and report here what the results were.

Geologica is based on Custom Ore Generation, which (as far as I know) does some kind of magic with the ore generation whatnots. Tomorrow I might try that and this together in a minimal test setup to see if it works.

What do you mean, "fox" isn't the sound foxes make? Didn't you learn anything from Pokémon?
Custom ore generation is usually done after chunk generation, so it should work (Minecraft default ore gen works just fine in Mineralogy).
