We're starting in the twilight forest. Player creation of portals is disabled. There is one portal, covered in bedrock, that can be dug out (rotarycraft is installed), and there are a set of mystcraft link books to known worlds from our older (1.4.7) world, and the overworld, safely "stored" at the top of an Ur-Ghast tower.
So that's three ways to get to the overworld: Bedrock breaker, or Ur-ghast tower, or random age hoping to get a star fissure.
(EDIT: I'm seriously trying to make this thing all about exploration. "Known" ages will include, assuming I can make this config idea work, an ATG surface world with geologica underground, a CC-based normal world (more reasonable biome distribution), and a normal vanilla style overworld. With different worlds being different -- plant mega pack plants not showing up in the overworld or twilight forest, some ages using COG clouds, some using COG veins, etc. I can see one immediate difference to implement -- mystcraft ages getting veins, and your tech dimensions (almost all single biomes, right?) getting higher-frequency clouds).
I think that a tech way to get to new worlds (powered from RoC), without the risk of entrapment that Mystcraft has, would be a nice added touch, especially if you can do anything differently. And it sounds like you have more "ground types" than mystcraft does (Stone, Dirt, Endstone, netherrack, obsidian -- I think that's the complete list for Mystcraft, and you've mentioned glass, at least), as well as "Inverted ravines" (Canyons ... ) as a different populator.
How do you valuate a world's "energy cost"? Is it just statically from the symbols DIMLETS used? Or do you profile some generated chunks?
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?
McJty, I have an interesting idea for a dimlet although I understand if it may be hard to implement, and not worth the trouble- how about an flipped/upside-down world, probably with default energized glowstone or potentially a "dense air" block that allows entities through but not liquids covering the "oceans"

The idea of an upside world was already in my mind although it would not be perfect (i.e. you would not easily get upside down trees and flowers). But allowing glowstone and lakes there is another matter though.

RFTools dimensions can be (at the moment) either single biome or else default biomes like the overworld.
The world's energy cost is made out of the dimlets you put in the world so you can see that when you're making your world (each dimlet also has a tooltip showing it's cost). In addition there is a cost that is calculated from all randomly selected features which is set at 10% total cost. So for example, say that you make a world where you specify certain features then it will cost at least according to the dimlets you inserted. However, if you then happen to get an expensive feature randomly (like diamond block tendrils) then you will have to pay for that with 10% of the diamond block cost. So you get rewarded from being lucky but not too much.
Note that this 10% cost can be configured. You can make random features cost 100% of the actual cost or even 0% if you don't want to pay for random features.

Well it was a compromise. Many people didn't think any cost should be added since you didn't ask for those features to be added. They were selected randomly. In a way you're also paying for controlling your dimension. Also the disadvantage of this 10% extra cost is that it makes it hard to plan for powering for your dimension if you suddenly get some unexpected expensive feature that you don't actually need. But anyway, it is configurable. If you think 10% is too cheap you can increase it.
I'm probably going to hit the same limitations that mystcraft hit with regards to how you can do worldgen. I'm actually still learning all the possibilities there so at this moment I can't really judge how complicated such a feature would be.

So checking: a dialing device will connect a nearby transmitter to any receiver, in any dimension?
Implying that you can use it from a dimlet dimension to get home, or to the nether, or to another dimlet dimension?

Yes, the teleportation system is actually independent from the dimension system. The teleportation system was created before I started working on the dimension system. The only thing the dimension builder does is place a fully charged matter receiver in the new dimension.

No that's right but don't forget the energy! The teleportation system needs energy on all sides (receiver and transmitter).

It doesn't matter what teleportation system you use (RFTools, Mystcraft, Enhanced Portals, ...). As soon as you arrive in a dimension that has 0 energy you will die immediatelly.

Can confirm, used Enhanced Portals, dialed wrong Gate, walked in, died instantly.
That did lead me to use an impromptu method of checking if the gate had received a signal, outputing a high redstone signal, and then turning on my power generation on that side though. That is how I have been doing high-yield mining without a quarry setup. The world has tendrils of ore which makes it much easier for me to get ore by hand (with a Drill, Magnet, and Jetpack). New update of RFTools with a few minor fixes and one requested feature:
2.01:
Fixed a client-server problem in the RF Network Monitor. Now it works on SMP too.
Added a checker functionality on SMP which checks if the client has the proper configuration for the dimlets. If there is a mismatch you will get a warning and a logged error.
It is now possible to change the dimension where you respawn in after you die in an RFTools dimension or when you get kicked out if power runs out. By default this is set to 0 (overworld).
Fixed a problem with the shield system were it would fail to turn back on if power was lost and then restored.

BTW, Still working on this but a bit slower with all the festivities and so on :-)
I'm currently working on a dimension editor where you will be able to insert some dimlets (like peaceful, efficiency, sky and time dimlets) into an already built dimension. This will not work by adding a dimlet to a dimension tab. Instead the dimlet will be injected into the dimension itself. That means it can also never be extracted again. It will be made a part of the 'non-specified' part of the dimension.
I also plan to bring 'instability' from Mystcraft into RFTools. But don't worry. Not the way you know it from Mystcraft. Basically I'm thinking about making 'Effect' dimlets. Some possible effect dimlets can be:
Hunger
Slowness
Poision
Regeneration
Haste
Blindness
...
Obviously the beneficial effect dimlets would be expensive and rare. But the other 'bad' dimlets can also be used as they will very slightly lower energy usage (so a bit like the efficiency dimlet but with less effect). Note that all these effect dimlets will be rather uncommon and also you will get an easy to craft dimlet to avoid all effects. It is probably recommended to always insert that in your dimensions if you don't want anything bad to happen.
Then I have some very specials plans for some very exotic dimlets with some terrain generator that you probably have not seen anywhere before.

Hmm, no. Not really.
I have not tried it yet but at least I didn't add code to make beds explode so I don't think that will happen.
Yes, the normal spawn heights are used unless you have random or specified extra ores. These can occur at any level below 60.

You could always use one of the myriad of Player Detectors to detect if they stepped upon the Transmitter/Receiever.
The other item is, as far as I know, a "human-readable" string you provide somewhere.

Yes, GenericChunkProvider.
Hmm. Not sure what that would be to be honest.

All I can think of, is ask Noogenesis; he can at least tell you where he is getting this string from.

Then I have some very specials plans for some very exotic dimlets with some terrain generator that you probably have not seen anywhere before.
