One of the best features in minecraft (in my opinion) is the ability to dye leather armor! However, as you know, leather armor is very weak, even in the early stages of the game. The aim of this mod is to create an armor set that is reasonably cheap to make, while still being useful AND dyeable. Enter: Clay Armor!
The clay armor provides a total of:
5.5 Armor (Helmet: 1, Chestplate: 2, Leggings: 1.5, Boots: 1)
121, 176, 165, and 143 durability (helmet, chestplate, leggings, and boots respectively)
More importantly, it provides greater explosion and fire/lava protection than even vanilla diamond armor!
Consider this: One full clay armor set allows the player to survive frontal creeper explosion in hard mode, an ability that is only rivaled by diamond armor. It is also possible to survive 4 simultaneous TNT explosions in hard mode.
Clay Armor can be dyed using all 16 dyes, and comes in 17 different colors.
Soft Leather Armor
Another armor set added is the Soft Leather Armor. It is also a step up from normal leather armor. Contrary to its name, it provides extra protection against projectiles, mainly arrows, as well as extra protection against Zombies, Zombie Pigmen, and Wolves. However, it cannot be dyed, as of now.
Clay Swords
These swords inflict 5.5 hearts of damage and have 190 durability, both of which are in-between values of stone and iron swords. However, these swords can kill a creeper within 2 hits, which is even greater than vanilla diamond swords (3 hits).
Similarly to hardened clay blocks, clay swords come in 17 different colors.
Clay Axes
These axes are crafted, smelted and dyed in the exact same manner as the clay sword! In addition to the ability to chop wood, 4.5 hearts of damage and 190 durability, these axes can kill a creeper in 3 blows (same as a diamond axe) and for all other mobs, uses only 1 durability point per hit!
Similarly to hardened clay blocks, clay axes come in 17 different colors.
Crafting Recipes
Clay Plate: is required for both clay armor and clay swords. It is crafted from 6 clay balls.
Ceramic Plate: Required to make the clay armor. Is smelted from Clay plates
Shrunken Leather: Used to make Soft Leather Armor. Is smelted from leather
Soft Leather Armor: Is a wearable armor set. Is also required to craft clay armor. Is crafted from shrunken leather.
Clay Armor: Is a wearable armor set. Crafted from ceramic plates and soft leather armor.
Unbaked Clay Sword: Is required to craft a clay sword. Is crafted from clay plates and a wood sword with at least half of its durability intact.
Clay sword: Is made by smelting an unbaked clay sword. Please note that they do not stack, so you must manaully remove them from the furnace to smelt the next unbaked clay sword.
Dyeing Clay Items
A shapeless recipe. It can only be dyed once, and does not require the item to be at full durability.
Repairing Clay Items
Clay armor/swords/axes can now be repaired by smelting it! Each time one of the items are smelted, 10 durability points are replenished. However, the clay items must have lost at least 10 points of durability before it can be repaired in this manner. Other methods of repairing still work the same way (combining tools, anvil, etc.).
Bonus: Lapis-Gold Armor!
Lapis gold armor is a special type of armor made of Lapis-lazuli and Gold Armor. It has 1.7 times the durability of gold, and also provides more damage reduction than gold. However, it is also halves damage done by potions and poison.

I'm pretty sure blocks of Clay can already be made, and the reinforced clay (Most preferably Reinforced Hardened Clay that can be coloured/stained) would be good for Pixel Art. and what do you mean by 'clay multi tool'?
And for 'teh_herper', this mod is genius and awesome. It should be in vanilla Minecraft.

Clay blocks do exist in Vanilla, unless I assume you are referring to a storage-type block?
Reinforced clay should be good, if they aren't like stronger than Diamond. Maybe it should be as strong as Iron, maybe 1/4 stronger.
As for the Clay Multi-tool, don't you mean a Paxel?
A Clay biome sounds okay, I'm not sure since it could be OP (Over Powered) if it's too common.
Another suggestion should be like a special type of Block which makes Reinforced Clay. EDIT 1: I didn't notice the Clay Golem, it should be made like a Snow Golem (just Hardened Clay instead of Snow) and should be a little better than a Snow Golem.

Quick "unofficial" update again!

Hardened Clay Balls & "Clayman"
Hardened clay balls deal 0.5 - 1.0 hearts of damage, and can stack up to 32, as opposed to the normal 16 for throwable objects. It is crafted from 1 piece of hardened clay (undyed), which yields 4 hardened clay balls.
A new mob has also been added: the Clayman. Currently, it only exists as a spawn egg in creative mode, and has 3 hearts of health. It does not burn in sunlight, but will still get damaged by simply being in water. It will attack enemies by throwing hardened clay balls at them, and when killed, will drop 1-8 hardened clay balls.
I'm kinda on the edge on what to do with this mob, so I want to hear from you guys of how it should exist in the game. I also want to know if colored variants of clay weapons/armor should have different properties.
Changelog:
ADDED Clay Balls, 32 stack, 0.5-1 hearts of damage
ADDED Clayman, (spawn egg only)
FIXED Clay Armor, Leather Armor & Lapis-Gold Armor taking damage when the player falls into the void or is killed using the /kill command
It seems like it would work pretty good with together with my clay based mod!
I didn't actually know that there was someone else doing the same kind of mod as me, but good work BTW. I also have some other things planned out for this mod, that hopefully won't overlap with your mod.

Fact: Using flint and steel on a creeper causes them to stop in place and blow up.
I like the idea you gave of different colors having different effects. I suggest getting rid of the effects hardened clay armor has right now so that each color doesn't have those effects plus a special effect. Here are my ideas for the special effects each color can have:
Default: No effects
White: Skeletons and Wither Skeletons do not attack when the full set is on
Light Gray: Cannot get any negative potion effects when the full set is on
Gray: Can get critical hits randomly instead of only when in the air when the full set is on
Light Blue: Infinite speed 1 effect when the full set is on
Blue: Heals quicker when in water with the full set on
Magenta: Takes no damage when using ender pearls when the full set is on
Purple: Can tame wolves and ocelots in 1 try when the full set is on
Pink: Can fully grow plants with one bone meal when the full set is on
Red: Infinite strength 1 effect when the full set is on
Orange: Infinite fire resistance 1 effect when the full set is on
Yellow: Takes 25% less damage when in the Nether when the full set is on
Lime: Infinite jump boost 2 effect
Green: Can climb walls like a spider when the full set is on
Brown: Loses hunger more slowly when the full set is on
Cyan: Gets resistance 1 when above half health, gets resistance 2 when below half health with the full set on
Black: Infinite night vision 1 effect when the full set is on

I may take your ideas for the effects into consideration, but they will (if implemented) be very minor effects, as it sways from the direction I want to go with this mod. The reason why clay armor is "blast resistant" is because it is inspired by the real life ceramic insets (which actually stop bullets, and not explosions), hence the item "ceramic plate." I also wish to make this mod feel as if it were a part of vanilla minecraft, and as such, I don't want to put any "extreme" features. I might be more lenient when it comes to adding features to the differently-colored clay balls.
Anyhow, thank you for your suggestions, and as always, suggestions are welcome!

If you want to make it feel like it could be in vanilla Minecraft, I don't suggest doing effects for colored hardened clay armor. It doesn't seem like something that would be in vanilla.
I have a couple ideas for hardened clay golems. Villages now generate in mesas and hardened clay golems as well as iron golems spawn as guards in them. There is one hardened clay golem for every five villagers. You can also create hardened clay golems with hardened clay in the same fashion you make a snow golem. They can be dyed by clicking on them, like how you dye a sheep.

Hello!
It has been quite a while since I last posted the update, and unfortunately, it may continue to be this way due to university work. However, I will try to update this mod every week or so. I am currently working on the clay golem, but there are still may problems with it. I'm thinking of adding naturally spawning clay golems to mesa biomes, and assign different relations (hostile, friendly, neutral, etc.) between the player and the clay golem, depending on the color of the clay they are made from.
hardened clay golems as well as iron golems spawn as guards in [villages]
I'm not really sure how village spawning mechanics work, (and I've never actually seen iron golems spawn in villages!) but that is a feature worth considering.
Hello guys! Here is a pretty large update that I have been working on, that includes many new features to the mod, especially building blocks, hence the mod's new name Claycraft, which, according to google search, is an untaken mod name (with the exception of one discontinued mod)!
Soul clay, the block used to "summon" claymen (similarly to snow golems), can be crafted like this:
All other recipes (except stained clay bricks - see below), are crafted in the same manner as the stairs, wall and slabs, and will produce the same amount of blocks as their counterparts.
I would recommend that you backup your save files, as this beta adds mob spawning. Please read the changelog before downloading, and report any bugs to me via this thread or PM. I will also roll out updates to this beta during the following week(s), as I squash out bugs (see below), however, as far as I know, this current beta does not have any game-breaking errors.
Again, please read the changelog!!!
Changelog:
ADDED Clayman's Head (Soulclay)
ADDED Clayman Summoning (2x hardened clay + soulclay, similarly to the snow golem)
ADDED Clayman now spawns in Mesa biomes and its variants
ADDED Clay Slabs
ADDED Clay Stairs
ADDED Clay Walls
ADDED Stained Clay Bricks
CHANGED Mod name from "Clay Combat" to "Claycraft"
FIXED Multiple errors with Clayman (Rendering, spawning)
FIXED Clayman now survives in the sun
BUG No recipes for Stained Clay Block
BUG Clay slabs don't stack
BUG Lighting Bug on stairs when smooth lighting is disabled
The clay armor provides a total of:
