I was going based on a combination of how the plants look when growing wild, where the main 'food' part is, what the item is actually classified as, and trying not to make one garden have too many items to keep it from being too hard to find one specific crop.
Asparagus is with the 'grass' group because it's a monocot, just like all true grains, pasture grasses, bamboo, and sugar cane. =)

Mar 27th, 2014 - Weee! Flowers and Mob Drop Crops have been released to patreons and will be added to this post by the weekend. Also, I've updated DesertCraft to 1.7.2c (see changelog below).
1.7.2c - Added missing items to Creative Tab, Cactus Chest armor now has Thorns I enchant when created
Weee! Flowers 1.7.2a is now available for Patreons and any Paypal donators who want to message me. I'll be posting the link for everyone else later this week when I have time to work on the original post and add pictures/details for the mod.

- Flowers now give one dye to match 1.7.2 single block vanilla flowers
- Now supports Lang files
- Flowers (not flower crops) placed on grass will expand like vanilla mushrooms so long as they're where flowers can normally spawn
- Flowers no longer spawn on grass with bonemeal--I cannot find the 1.7.2 way to do this correctly

I got the Cutting Board item/block/crafting grid and GUI working. =)
I'm doing all the complicated stuff first (GUIs, tile entity stuff for the bees/etc) before I start porting everything else over.
Also, if I can make them look nice, I might be doing a item/block/crafting grid combo for the Pot, Skillet, Saucepan, Bakeware, Mixing Bowl, Juicer, and Mortar and Pestle. If so, the Pot, Skillet, Saucepan, and Bakeware will only be place able on the furnace.

No, we can just assume that the furnace has enough residual heat to cook food after smelting iron at 2000 degrees. xD
I've re-uploaded Weee! Flowers 1.7.2b to make flowers breaking sound like grass instead of glass. Whoops.
Idea for new mini-mod: GLASS FLOWERS! Because beauty is fragile...and splinters easily. Makes place-able glass flowers on any surface by combining dye and a glass block in a kiln block.

I've gotten the Apiary working at 100% now but the Presser is mighty broken.
I've also added a way to get more Queen Bees without travelling--grubs have a small chance of being produced when a queen makes combs in the Apiary. You can then take an exhausted Queen Bee (full damage) and turn her into Royal Jelly. Combine that with a Bee Grub and ta-da, new Queen Bee. I've also reduced the damage of Queen Bees from 36 to 18 (a full Apiary) but may increase the spawn rate of natural generating hives.
Slowly but surely I'm getting the apiary and presser working. ;.;
wanted to know if you were going to address the current "out of range" problem the presser has. i've lost a lot of honey combs on 1.6.4 due to going out of range. it continues to eat the honey comb, but fails to put out the end products.
also wanted to know, i dunno if you said you were or not, but what are the plans with the crops and different biomes? are you planning to split up plants into biomes they can naturally be found in? maybe coconut trees in rainforests/beaches and the like?
Also wanted to suggest, with the updated mod and having a savanna Biome, might we see an introduction of Dates?
