I was developing this feature for a different mod I was working on, but I figured some people may want it as a standalone mod too. This mod is similar to the one developed by Risugami, however it requires no base class edits and a death chest can be created without needing to have a chest in your inventory.
Usage
If your configuration is set to not need a saving stone(Which is not needed by default) then whenever you die a chest will spawn that contains as many of your inventory items as it can fit. If your configuration is set to need a saving stone, you'll need to craft one then leave it in your inventory. No activation or sacrifice needed. The stone will be destroyed when you die, so you'll need to craft another.

Stop treating mod devs poorly. These people mod as a hobby or as a service to the community, they don't have to take your suggestion and you are not entitled to anything from them.
Could you add a saving stone that has, say 5 uses, maybe costs 4 stone and a diamond? With this upgraded one it would spawn a double chest so everything+armor fits.

Hello, I tried this mod but it didn't work. A chest did show up when I died, but it was empty. There were one or two items outside the chest (I guess anything that wouldn't have fit in it?), but the majority of my inventory was gone. I have a few other mods installed including Backpacks, NEI and Inventory Tweaks, could one of these have interfered? I wasn't carrying a backpack when I died.

This has only happened once, as I ended up removing the mod after it happened, sorry. I was too nervous about it happening again, and losing so many good items a second time. It's possible that it's just because of my particular set of mods though (I've got a lot), so if you can't reproduce it don't worry too much. Here is my log from that death though.

I have downloaded your mod and I have to say, it's amazing. But, I have encountered something odd. It happens when entire player inventory is full (including armor and hotbar.)
Testing method
Player is wearing full set of armor (no matter what kind of material), entire inventory is full. The pattern of players inventory is following: Row: 1.dirt 2.wood planks 3.sandstone 4.(hotbar) stone. If the saving stone is required, it is placed in last slot in third row, that mean there is only eight stacks of 64 sandstone instead of nine. If saving stone isn't required, in third row is nine stacks of 64 sandstone. Player is killed by falling from sky, using creative mode to gain enough height and then switching into survival mode.
Results
Is saving stone required in order to create death chest? > yes
Death with saving stone > lost two items (obviously, saving stone and one item / stack of items)
-on place where player died is created death chest, entire third row (sandstone) is thrown out including armor. After opening the chest we see following: row 1.stone 2.dirt 3.wood planks. It is also noticed that collected was only seven stacks of 64 sandstone instead of eight.
Death without saving stone > lost nothing
-every item is scattered around of place where player died, after collecting the items, entire inventory is full again.

Assuming the chest fills up, then all items that cannot fit inside of it are left on the ground
This has only happened once, as I ended up removing the mod after it happened, sorry. I was too nervous about it happening again, and losing so many good items a second time. It's possible that it's just because of my particular set of mods though (I've got a lot), so if you can't reproduce it don't worry too much. Here is my log from that death though.

I haven't been able to reproduce it either so I'm going to assume it was a one time bug. Sorry about the items :(. I'm going to work on the way I place the items in the chest to stop all of these bugs from occuring.
Yes indeed is full, but the point of my post was that I'm losing one item (or stack of items) even if saving stone isn't required. I've tried this with 80 mods and with this mod alone. It happens every time.
I'll try explain it with pictures.
This is with "requireSavingStone=false" setting

As you can see, entire inventory is full. Full diamond set, entire rows with 64 stacks of gold blocks, iron blocks, emerald blocks and diamond blocks.

Killing myself by falling from great height.

As you said, everything that couldn't fit into chest would be scattered around it. Notice that these are emerald blocks and armor scattered around the chest instead of diamond blocks.

After collecting armor and emerald blocks from ground, this is content of the death chest. It is full of well... blocks. Notice the stacks of emerald blocks. One stack is missing. If saving stove would be needed for creating death chest (requireSavingStone=true) there would be only seven stacks of 64 emerald blocks.
If saving stone is needed for creating death chest and player dies without it, his entire inventory is scattered around his deadpoint (place where he died). But everything would be there (entire inventory).
If saving stone isn't needed for creating death chest or player carry saving stone in his inventory, his death will result into creating death chest. iIems that cannot fit into chest would be scattered around the chest. But it will also result of losing one item /stack of items, if his inventory was full. Like the one stack of emerald blocks seen above.
And the best thing of all, it works even if players inventory isn't full. The more times you'll try it (and with same blocks / items) the more of them you'll lose. I tried it three times with the blocks as seen in first picture. Three stacks of emerald blocks has been lost.
That is what I tried to tell you.

I have found the problem and a fix will be issued tonight. There was a problem where the mod would fetch one item stack less than what was provided, explaining the missing stack.
Also, I figured I would give some information about this mod:
1. Your inventory is NOT necessarily saved from top to bottom or vice-versa. The mod receives a list of items dropped when the player dies from Forge, depending on your config settings then it will search the list for a saving stone, afterwards it will pull each item from the list and set it into the chest. If the chest is full, then the item goes on the ground. The only time this mod removes items is if the item is placed in the chest, this is required to prevent item duping.
2. I have not been able to reproduce a reported bug that causes items to vanish. I am going to have to assume that the items simply despawned.
And i'll be very happy if you make it compatible with other mods such as The Aether II mod.

Stop treating mod devs poorly. These people mod as a hobby or as a service to the community, they don't have to take your suggestion and you are not entitled to anything from them.

Could you add a saving stone that has, say 5 uses, maybe costs 4 stone and a diamond? With this upgraded one it would spawn a double chest so everything+armor fits.
That is an interesting idea. I'll check out the mechanics of a double chest and if it works well then I'll add it.
I'll try to reproduce this then get back to you. Can I have your config settings?

That works. Also, has this happened multiple times? If so, can I have the console log?
Assuming the chest fills up, then all items that cannot fit inside of it are left on the ground
