Honestly, it'd be awesome if other mods like Witchery could be done like this, but some modders are just too paranoid, thinking that they'll be left in the dust, no credit given, that sort of thing. Hopefully Emoniph's not like that.
I've asked the people on IRC where he used to hang out and everyone said noone has heard from him in over a year now, I also checked on steam and it says he was last logged in...
Wait it says now that he was last logged in 36 days ago?!
That means he's still alive!
He was offline for over a year before, I wonder what happened to him?

Alrighty, I have a PM sent, and a tweet to check his MCF PMs.

I just took the Minecraft Noob test! Check out what I scored. Think you can beat me?!
Extreamly sad to see you go but I understand that life comes before pleasure. I would greatly love if you did open it for others to update Thaumcraft themselves so that Minecraft doesn't lose another amazing mod. I'm a little curious though, why is everyone saying about updating Thaumcraft 5 and not asking for Thaumcraft 6? I personally would rather have 6 than 5 if there is a choice as it has some amazing ideas in it that I really want play with. I know it comes down to what ever Azanor decides to release but I think 6 would be better than 5.

Well, I don't know the feature state of 6 but 5 was pretty fleshed out. If you're going to port something, I'd think it would make most sense to port the version that has more features complete. Plus TC5 has a LOT of addons and could also get ported.

It depends on the completion of TC6. Since the devellopment of TC6 is not complete, it makes more sense if azanor wants to take time away from modding to make a "port" of what works, instead of trying to complete what he has started. This way, his mod has less chances to diverge from his latests ideas.
People are just suggesting what seems to be "the easiest way out".
Ah that's true, I was kinda assuming that for the most part 6 was pretty well completed and the stuff that might be missing could just be ported from 5. What ever Azanor decides I will be happy though as I don't wana see this mod stop development.

Hey Azanor, as sad as it is to come back to Minecraft after all this time and see this, I totally understand the reasoning. And there are probably plenty of licenses you could use to ensure no one can claim ownership of your mod but still let them work on it. The last thing I want is for Thaumcraft to turn into another Witchery. EDIT: up to you of course, but I think most of the community would be happy to turn the mod back over to you in a few years/whenever you have time.
I hope someday there's more magic in Minecraft, though I know it's not likely to happen. In the meantime, I play modded a lot. I enjoy a lot of other games too, so don't expect me to be on the forums all the time.
It's sad to see Thaumcraft be put on hold, but hey, we at least got to experience it.
As for letting someone else code it... eh, I'd have my doubts personally, I mean Azanor clearly knows what he's doing in the way of coding.
Most mods I've played have been clunky, of course there are some gems out there that run smoothly, but nothing has ever ran as smoothly as Thaumcraft for me, I doubt someone else could replicate that level of smoothness.
I'd 100% let someone take up the thaumcraft torch. It would be a shame if the mod dies with you. Good reasons to leave the project, but I wouldn't limit players because of IP worries. Release the source to someone you trust if you must, or just let the open source run free IMO.
Now playing in survival, in versions higher than 1.7.10, it seems almost impossible to me.
Many great mods have already died after 1.8.9, and many others have worsened their quality (for example: twilight forest does not exist, witchery does not exist, ars magic does not exist, metallurgy does not exist).
With every great mod that dies, a piece of minecraft also dies.
Seriously, Mojang should facilitate and support the creation of mods, minecraft would not be a famous game if it had not been for its mods. It would have been nothing.
agreed. Injustices such as Mojang's failure to appreciate the modding community properly really —if you'll forgive the profanity, which is apparently auto-censored— ****ing **** me off. They're too busy catering to the Kidz that just get it on Xbox because it looks cool and not respecting the people that like it so much they want to add content at their own expense. It's a disgrace and I won't tolerate it much more. I haven't decided yet what I'm going to do about it, but I think Mojang should either clean up their act or watch their back, because I think if I put my mind to it, I could easily make something that would top Notch (punintended)
edit as to avoid a double post:
also, I support what others have said directly concerning the hiatus. It's a lot more work than most players realize to even get started modding. I know a bit of Java but I also need know things like how to use forge effectively and use version control software like GIT. And I don't yet...
take care of what you need to take care of, take a break from modding, but we really hope to see you back at some point doing what you're clearly very good at: making magical blocks n' stuff. Hopefully if it's as important to you as it seems to be with as much as you put into it, your family will understand if/when you decide you want to come back to the modding scene. We'll miss you, and take care of yourself :-(
This is an unfortunate development. Thaumcraft is the sole reason I made an account on these forums to begin with. Indeed, Thaumcraft 5 was the first mod I downloaded for Minecraft, after years of playing strictly vanilla.
Thank you, Azanor, for allowing me this experience before time ran out. Thaumcraft had alone reignited my love for Minecraft, and encouraged me to branch out and explore mods that I had previously only seen in videos.
I only wish I were myself more competent in Java, so that I could myself contribute to this great modding community, as this mod has inspired me to do.

Same here. First thing I did on this site was invading 'zanor's privacy and saying that Thaumcraft was my favourite thing ever.
As much as I've enjoyed Thaumcraft over the years, work and family are definitely more important and I wholeheartedly respect your decision to postpone development. I wish you the best of luck in all of your endeavors. Thanks for everything Azanor.
its been a couple days since i read the news, and im still so sad.
even when ive not been active on this forum, ive always been lurking this thread and bookmarked it on my browser hotbar.
thaumcraft was the mod that got me into playing minecraft at all. i only ever got into the game after seeing dires thaumcraft 2 mod spotlight. shortly after, i learned that i actually downloaded thaumcraft 3 and got even more excited after looking into it.
the mod has not just been a staple in almost all of my worlds, but the center of them.
as many already said, its truly become a piece of art. azanor has not just made one of the most popular mods within the community, but he has aways been defining new standarts. hes one of the most innovative and talented modders, bringing endless hours of enjoyment to thousands of people.
i really wish you best of luck in any of your endevours, and hope that one day you find the time to resume this hobby and return to us. good luck, and thanks for everything!

Yeah thaumcraft is the whole reason I still play minecraft, I remember downloading mod packs with like 60+ mods thinking I would play with them and only playing with thaumcraft.
For a while I wanted to suggest that TC3, TC4, and TC5 sources be dumped into a git for up keeping by the community while we wait for the next installment. However since Azanor was using Patreon, I figured it would be a no-go.
I do hope that at least TC5 finds its way into a git. I'm on 1.11 and I want to keep moving forward. TC is a huge mod, and the only one I bother to use when it's available.
I've been learning to write mods and I think a source like TC would provide a wealth of training materials, so I'd defiantly hit that git. I'm no where near the level of maintaining it, but I'm sure quite a few devs would pick it up. Plus Azanor could still retain control.
I am considering my options in regards to letting other people work on it. Things get a bit complicated if I chose to do that in regards to the IP and so forth should I ever choose to return to modding or maybe turn Thaumcraft into something more than just a MC mod.
I'm not expert, but I'm pretty sure there are ways to give limited time dependent licences for such an IP. Another option is to officially designate a "partner" who will carry on the work, but not take full ownership.
Again, thank you for creating what I have often described as "the best mod anywhere."
This is sad, as everyone else has been saying. Thaumcraft is/was the only reason I actually played minecraft. However, I looked through the posts, and seeing that no one else has suggested it well here it goes: eventually if you ever are going to get back to thaumcraft, instead of going through the stupidity of fixing or working around mojang's problems, I think it would be amazing to see thaumcraft as its own independent game. I would personally buy that game. anyway that's just my 2 cents.

Well, I guess I'm not moving from 1.7.10 anytime soon
I thank Azanor for using his time on Thaumcraft, though. I raise up my bottle of Dr. Pepper to you, sir, in a toast to show my appreciation.

Thanks for all the support and kind words folks. I was honestly expecting more rage, but I guess we built a pretty cool little community here.
Look at that, some dust must have gotten in my eye.
