Mods like NEI are 100% necessary when playing stuff like IC2 because on their own all the recipes make zero sense.
Thaumcraft, however, has the Thaumonomicon.
NEI is just what vanilla creative should be and a crutch to preserve a little bit of immersion in mods that have thousand sof unexplained random recipes.
In an ideal world nobody would ever need NEI-like mods.
I miss them.
I mean the new wonderful way you can farm vis shards replaced them and I wouldn't want the ore back, but man, the clusters were nice.
Also as storage. Now that I have a giant shard garden under my house I have no place to put them all. My main way of farming ordo essence has pretty much always been order shards, because they are so easy to get when you have a 100x Ordo node on your roof.

Hmm, if they are super fast growing magical crystals, shouldn't you be able to attach them together to make a big crystal instead of a cluster?
I imagine them fusing together master emerald style.
Oops...
But seriously... Is he talking about Thaumcraft 5? Am I not the only one who has been stalking this thread even though they haven't decently tried out TC 5 yet?
If so:
How come I have never seen this question before?
How come no one has been able to answer it yet? Come on, this is the TC thread; epicentre of activity on these forums!
In TC5 they were removed leaving the only stabilization blocks as candles and skulls (I think those are what's left). Unless an addon adds new stabilizers you're stuck with candles.
1. Candles are easy to make so people just went with those.
2. No one's asked before, at least not that I'm aware of any way.
Crimson King? No. We need a different kind of hero.
(I apologise.)
Seriously though, I could see the Crimson Caesar being a thing. But that would either involve a lot of backstory about the Crimson Cult being revealed, or a special grounds in which to meet this Caesar be established.

Praise be Ro-naza, greatest among the thaumaturges!
Skulls got the "only obtainable by charged creeper kill" update in 1.8.9, didn't they?
Still one of the weirdest newer features of Minecraft imo.
[But I am drifitng off-topic here]
Actually I don't think so. It raises a good point we should have multiple ways to stabilize an infusion altar. If skulls are so hard to come by should we be pigeonholed into only using candles? I'm sure there are plenty of other lore friendly alternatives that could be added.

Redstone dust, maybe, or bookshelves. Perhaps end rods, when the update hits.
...Raises the question, does the enderdragon head count as a regular head?

I don't know if they do. I don't know how common they are. But imagine having to turn this(those) dragon head(s) into thaum-mecanical skulls of stabilisation. A skull with mystical writings and tubes/brass plates/crystals that you have hang near thaumaturgical aparatuses.
Welp, I need this now.

I made a D flip-flop!
NEI occupies the curious space of being an annoying mod that's absolutely critical to have.
That's a strange way to spell Witchery.
Witchery over Thaumcraft?

BURN THEM AT THE STAKES!!!
Oh give him this one, since the Emoniph disappeared a few months ago.
Also can anybody tell me if any item other than candles can be used for stability?
Because clusters don't exist and skulls cannot realistically be obtained.
...according to my tests no, absolutely not. No jars, no nitors, no pedestrals...

Well, you're expected to get at least 3 wither skulls, so... those, I guess?

I really want those Crimson Rangers though. They look marvelous.
Currently making a poor attempt to learn Java/Eclipse/etc to try to make a personal mod.

I'm wanting crystals to return for TC5 as well...I don't care about functionality...I just like them.

It should. I see no reason why it wouldn't, aside from it's acquisition.
