I don't need to know HOW to get weak blood shards, I was just wondering how rare they are. I have used up about 3 or 4 Magician's Blood Orbs full and gotten 1.

Kill hostile mobs with bound weapons. Hit mobs with them to apply a "Weakness" debuff. It lasts three seconds, kill them while they have this debuff for a chance to get a shard, and as Laskeri said looting helps with the drop chance.
You can't get shards from hostile mobs you one shot, they need at least two hits(One to apply the debuff, the other to kill).

The wells range up is very short (3-5 blocks, I can't really remember). Your best bet is to have the cows one block above the MRS, as that always works.
Okay, I managed to get this to work now. The next thing I'm trying to do is the Ritual of Regeneration. It seems that it can be done using the same MRS as the Well of Suffering but one ritual has to be activated before adding the second, right? In fact I created the Ritual of Regeneration first, activated and then created the Well of Suffering and finally activated that. Now, the cows get killed pretty fast so I'm wondering if the Ritual of Regeneration still works. Is there a way to check this?
I suppose it does because I got some different LP amounts from two test cows, but the regenerating effect does not seem to be that strong so that I'm considering to set up some kind of cow breeder to feed the well.
Anyway, it would be great, if the Sigil of Divination would tell which rituals are currently active on a given MRS.

That feature would be rather redundant, as a MRS can only power one rite at a time. That is the reason the regen seems so weak: There is no regen. Rituals can share runes, but not MRS.

Any chance you could change the alchemical chemistry set to be I-sided so it could be automated? Perhaps blood orb in the bottom, ingredients in the sides and product out the top.
MEOW is curious as to whether there is a cow or some kind of other animal trapped in that hole in the darkness.

Hail the textbook, for the textbook contains knowledge and knowledge is power. Those who do not seek new knowledge even occasionally are likely to live their whole life in a state of un- fulfilling stagnation.
Just plugged in the mod and I like how this looks. Also got a suggestion. Not sure if it's been suggested before, but perhaps you can add a tome to act as an in-game guide like the Thaumonomicon from Thaumcraft 4 or the Arcane Compendium from Ars Magica 2. Or maybe you can add a series of books like in Witchery or Tinkers Construct, each one covering a separate aspect of the mod. Either way would make things easier for less-experienced users of the mod by eliminating the need to go back and forth between the game and the forum to figure something out.

Way has in-game documentation on his "To-do" list. But in game docs are a "Low priority item", as right now he is more interested in adding content then writing about what he already has (Right now in the works: a 1.7.2 port, and a spell system that might rival ars magica).
Personally, I think people are a little spoiled in regard to in game docs. Right now we will stick to the old fashioned ways you learned about mods: this forum, our wiki ( http://ftbwiki.org/Blood_Magic ), or by stopping by our IRC channel (espernet.com, #bloodmagic). With all this, you have more information then any book will ever have.

Two questions:
1.) I get that LP/Blood is supposed to be thick(-er than water) and all, but 20 mB/s as a base seems a bit on the low side. I understand the whole balance thing here, what with making players choose between sacrifice runes and other runes like the dislocation rune (protip: Build two altars as resources allow, one for cutting yourself and one for holding all the tasty red water [and also transmuting with speed runes] :3) but taking nearly a minute per bucket is a bit extreme IMHO, especially considering lava can be pumped at upwards of 2 buckets/s. Any chance for a small buff to the speed, or a config option to increase the flow rate?
2.) Dislocation Runes help move LP both into and out of the altars buffer, right? Would that mean to transfer between two altars you'd need to add the runes to both for optimal speed boosting?
Three suggestions:
1.) Ender Rune/Altar: Just thinking it'd be kind of cool to have some method of linking one or more altars to your own network with a shared pool. Something simple like a rune that, when placed as an upgrade to an altar, links to your blood network (both adding the altars capacity to your network and allowing the altar to draw from your network). Alternatively, it could be an upgrade to the altar itself, at the tier of Archmages Blood Orb and Endstone. The reasoning here is simply that once blood is in your network you can't get it out, unless I missed something, so having a way to access it for transmutations in an altar would be pretty awesome.
2.) Occult Drafting Wand: Just something I'd like to see, a handy tool for planning an altar more easily, akin to the rune dousing wand. Something simple like a Blood Rune in a tier 2 or higher altar to give you the item, then put it through again in the tier 3 to get the tier 4 layout wand etc. Perhaps instead of actually building the altar it places ghost copies of the blocks it needs which could be replaced with the appropriate components similar to the Phantom Bridge blocks but less vanishy. I realize this isn't exactly a "need-to-have" item, especially when you've build a few altars already and know the drill, but it would be crazy handy for teaching newbies how to do it, or if you're like me and my obtuse love of having all the conveniences of home at every base, right down to the totally automatic ore processor and the doomsday laser on the roof. XD
3.) Portable Altar: A silly idea for sure but hear me out. For starters, the altar is a huge build and, while parts of it are totally customizable (dirt altars!), that doesn't change the fact that finding the space to build one is a test of patience and skill even for the most vetted of builders. Hence taking up an inventory slot instead of a plot of land. My thought here is that you'd still have to build a real altar (idealy tier 5 required), then imbue a sacrifice knife with some (absurd) amount of LP. Once the knife is imbued the altar could go through some nightmarish transmutation with lots of lightning and fire, ending with it being turned into a lump of lifeless stone and gravel (the altar block itself would be spared, but all the runes would be "burnt out" so to speak). Once all the thunder and lightning is over with the dagger will have transformed into a small idol thingy, having retained all the runes and abilities of the full-size thing. Right-clicking with it would function like the knife, but instead of internal reserves it goes straight to your network. Shift-right clicking could place it into the world for transmutations. And, as long as it's in your inventory you could whip out your mob-snackrificing dagger and suck them dry, wherever you are. As an alternative, a massive ritual built around the altar with the keystone on top of it, requiring the awakened crystal to perform it, would be a neat way to go about it. In anycase the idea here is to more or less combine the power of the altar with the portability of a blood orb, for todays busy sanguine mages on the go. ^^;
Sooooooo yeah. ^^; Thoughts?
Edit: One more idea came to mind - some sort of overflow prevention rune that could direct a certain amount of overflow/otherwise wasted LP and then dump it to where it might be useful - like your network. XD
1. This is more for balance, and giving you a hard time making the magicians blood orb. This effectively cuts off automation untill you have one. As for lore, it not the the blood is too think. The altar ITSELF does not want to give up the blood.
2. Yes, the default in/out is 20 MB/s.
S1. Using rites, you can spend LP to make LE using a sort of catalyst. These methods can actually make more LP then used to generate LP. An ender rune would break balance, as it is not meant to be easy to put blood in the altar.
S2.Might be useful.
S3, Way too unbalanced. The reason altars are so big is to make you think about where they go. You must work to build an altar, even if you have everything needed for it. a portable one... unthinkable.
S4. If your concerned about overflow, then your doing something wrong. At no point is overflow anything but your own fault, whether you used the dagger one too many times, did some math incorrectly or even just built an altar sub-optimally. A little waist is the price of your mistake.

How fast does an altar absorb blood without speed runes while crafting? Because I seem to remember there being a tiny bit of wiggle room to increase the input/output of blood from the altar while not breaking this balance. I may be mistaken. I do agree that if anything its more annoying than anything waiting on the blood to pour into my tanks when I go to move my altars predislocation rune.

While crafting? The rate never changes for input/output. But if you mean how fast it uses LE in crafting, that depends on what your making. A diamond absorbs LE a lot slower then a gold block.

Dammit Way! Why can't you make it all absorb at the same rate! Now I am going to need to find a way to record these rates for my own obsessive needs. I will post my findings on my return.

Spooky. o-o
Like me and chocolate chip mint icecream. XD
Though wouldn't that also kind of imply that the altar would have a far higher input rate, since it wants blood?

Fair enough. I'll just built a fake portable altar with translowhatchamajiggies. :3

It might just be me, but I tend to get a small surge of lag when cutting myself and it tends to take away more hearts than I wanted with a lot of LP going to waste. It's an inconvenience at worst really, since I have healing taken care of by another mod (doesn't come cheap though).
Try putting Fortune on your Bound Blade.
