Probably but you can shear them and collect them so they can be obtained. (tested before reply in 1.6.4 Thaumcraft 4) hence that idea. But I really like this mod and in my opinion if you were to change how ores were to grow and how they looked that would mean a potential re-write of the mod itself thus my idea on how to make them more like cane.
Maybe I could make that ores require lava nearby to grow. Do you think that's a good idea?
For all of them. That reduces the amount of files I need to make too.
Considering that they are kind of the opposite of sugar cane in the fact that they are ores and not plant, it makes sense. I think it would be great but ultimately it is your mod.

Well I think it's a pretty cool idea, and I thought of it a little while ago. I might do it.
uh.... Not to rain on anyone's parade but, that sounds like a really bad idea, as I'd probably lose half of all my reeds into the lava, not to mention the possibility of accidentally stepping into the lava and burning up. Having the material in which the specific ore is found placed next to the growing block seems like a better idea from my viewpoint.

Heheh there are pros and cons to everything. There are also many ways that you could make your ore farms aesthetically pleasing. If you use this in a mod pack, microblocks can make almost any block micro. Also turtles are a great way to farm these as the go directly into their inventory rather than dropping as an entity (meaning it wouldn't matter if there was open lava nearby or not). As for vanilla, you could essentially place the growing block 2 blocks below ground so that the first reed is at the same height as the ground around it and the reeds that grow are above ground. Doing this would allow the lava to be covered up and could look cool as the reeds would appear to "pop" out of the ground.
Also what are mod pack permissions for this mod? (I would assume you could as there is a vast support for mods)
Hello,
Cold you see if you can limit use of block ids? When you have a huge pack whit mods and are geting realy low on Block ids. Your mod add atlast 40 block ids.
A suggest is to use meta data.

Metadata is used for the reeds growth stages. The ids will only be taken up if you have that corresponding mod installed.

You are able to use the mod in a modpack as long as you post in this thread that you are including it in a pack. You must also include a link to this page somewhere (for example on a forum post or a read me).
Hey ModMaker, I want to tell you that this mod doesn't work together with Pixelmon. Just so you can add that on the forumpost? And If you could tell it to Skydaz too that would be great!

Hey B0bGary, spectacular work so far. Ores have just been an irritation to get when you've got big plans.
I'm curious though, I've got some mods that add some ores and it seems the growable ores haven't been enabled. I have ferrous and lead ores showing in NEI brought by Thermal Expansion, but the growable lead ore and growable ferrous ore don't show. I checked the config and it seems there isn't a way to force it in like I could do in the 1.6.2 version (currently using the latest 1.6.4 version). The config also shows that there are growable ferrous and lead ores, so unless they're not yet implemented how might I make them show?
Hey, I know it's not technically an ore, but what about growable Ender Pearls? They're such a pain to get- every Enderman I come across runs away while I'm fighting it, so I have to go after it. Takes me upwards of five minutes to catch and kill one. Just a thought.

Maybe next time.
I saw that. It's a pretty good review. I'll add it to the OP soon.
Is that for Thaumcraft reeds?

I concur. Can't wait to see it implemented.
you could always put slabs over the lava
Yeah, Good point.
Also a good point.

The first thing I thought of was the reeds falling into the lava, then me as well. Think I'm a lava magnet sometimes.

The Extra Utilities Mod has this already. It has several other fun features as well. Check it out http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1776056-164forge-extra-utilities-v102/
when forestry is installed, the apatite reed refuses to be able to craft...or even cheat in for that matter...
AND YOU SHOULD TOO!
Advanded repulsion systems (IC2) was being a tool.
Nope, still not working...
AND YOU SHOULD TOO!
Do you have plugins for forestry installed or forestry add-ons? I am having no problem crafting them or cheating them in at all.
