In other words, unless mojang changes the tos, mod authors own their mods.
I don't have against this mod, I'm just saying just you should know the facts before you say something like that.
What You Can Do
If you've bought the game, you may play around with it and modify it. We'd appreciate it if you didn't use this for griefing, though, and remember not to distribute the changed versions of our software. Basically, mods (or plugins, or tools) are cool (you can distribute those), hacked versions of the Minecraft client or server are not (you can't distribute those).
Any tools you write for the game from scratch belongs to you. Other than commercial use (unless specifically authorized by us in our brand and assets usage guidelines - for instance you are allowed to put ads on your YouTube videos containing Minecraft footage), you're free to do whatever you want with screenshots and videos of the game, but don't just rip art resources and pass them around, that's no fun. Plugins for the game also belong to you and you can do whatever you want with them, as long as you don't sell them for money. We reserve the final say regarding what constitutes a tool/plugin and what doesn't. Other
We reserve the right to change this agreement at any time with or without notice, with immediate and/or retroactive effect.
Any suggestions made are assumed to be offered for free unless otherwise agreed before the suggestion was made. We're not going to put up a huge EULA. We're trying to be open and honest, and we hope people treat us the same way back.
If there's anything legal you're wondering about that isn't answered from this page, don't do it and ask us about it. Basically, don't be ridiculous and we won't.
And we Can change our mind about this in the future if we want to and disallow anything we choose...
I KNOW what TOS I'm agreeing to when I say yes... You need to insinuate I had not read or understood it...
As a Person that has worked in software and Branding for nearly 20 years in NYC and have been "modding" and "Hacking" games since Angband and my first ATARi. This translates to....
"You can make what you want, and we will not Claim the work done to be our own, But ultimately you CAN NOT SELL IT and therefore it REALLY BELONGS TO US as it is WORTHLESS WITHOUT OUR GAME... we also have the final say on if your mod will be considered a plugin or just our code altered to do things other than its intended purpose..."
Note the use of the term "Plugin" and not "Mod"
You can read it all warm and fuzzy if you like but I choose to read it from the point of view of a business not a hacker...
And another thing, I've put literally hundreds of hours into metallurgy, and even that pales in comparison to how much work others have put into their mods. And you say the "should" give that away. When you've put that much work into something (something you legally own), it's your right to do what you want with it, no one else should be able to tell you otherwise. Now metallurgy is open source, I have no problems with that, but no one can tell me that I'm not entitled to do what I want with something I've put this much time into.
EDIT: sorry about the double post, usually the MCF merges successive posts :S
Mojang can do whatever it pleases... and if Mojang is going to open the source of minecraft and allow us to make mods to start with... what right does a hack or mod or plugin whatever you legally term it to be really have???
I agree its AWESOME you and others have put that much time into a mod, and produced Great things for the Users of Minecraft... But in the end without MInecraft we have nothing... Without that minecraft.jar your mod is just a collection of code... that without a game does nothing...
My point in that was MANY mods go the way of the dinosaur because of Ego and Arrogance within a closed source system.
The Sims, The Sims2 and the Sims3 are a fine example. I have been modding those games for YEARS... EA has over the years embraced this process, making it easier for mods to be made and in turn maintained and continued long after the "original creator" has lost interest in it. But even among that community some continue to hoard knowledge of "how to do things" .
There is a big difference between "giving away" and "open source" and hate to break it to you but you have to "give away" the compiled mod... as you can't sell it... "open source" leads to a stronger community, more adept modders and BETTER MODS... Not just a million and one new Tool mods....
Note also Ad's are Allowed on Videos and Screenshots But it DOES NOT say its ok to adfly your mod.
TOS are vague and twisting legal documents designed NOT FOR THE USER but for the SOFTWARE COMPANY... Even when talking about one as cool open and user friendly as Mojang... You have researched the concepts on the API right? and how the whole deal there will bring all the mods into Mojangs distribution matrix? How you wont post and download out here in the community but from within minecraft itself? How the API will not just be a way to make mods but also the host and advertiser of mods?
Think about that, go watch the interview from minecon...
Mojang never said minecraft was going open source (Notch did mention letting modders access the unobfuscated source by signing an agreement, but that's not open source, and that's not the plan now), I highly doubt that will happen for a long time from now.
I agree that making your mod open source is good and helps the community and new (or even older) modders. However I do not agree that one is obligated to make their mod open source. It's their work, they own it, they can do whatever they see fit with it and we have no right to complain about it.
I think that this whole argument is getting way out of hand. The facts are these:
People have been wanting a stand-alone storage mod that offered functionality like barrels since Factorization introduced them.
Mods that do the same thing as other mods happen all the time. Even the big popular mods aren't entirely unique.
Another mod that has one feature that Factorization has isn't going to make people want to use Factorization any less. People who like/want the other features, will use the mod that has those features, while the main people who will use this are those who (like me) liked the idea of barrels, but were turned off from using Factorization in the first place due to other things in it.
Wow people, calm down. It's just a small mod. Don't start an argument in someone's thread. People are talking about "tact" and being rude and whatnot, well... Go send each other private messages if you want to argue. No need to spam someone's thread with it.
Anyway. I would have advised changing the name/texture a bit more, and maybe at least contacting the person who made the original barrels, but as long as you didn't just steal code/textures, I don't see a big issue.
However, that being said..I like this mod. Whenever I use modpacks and things that add factorization, barrels are the only thing I really use from it. Not that Factorization is bad, or anything, just..barrels. Best idea ever.
There is an advantage to using my mod then Factorization all together.
A) Less buggy. There are a couple of bugs the Factorization barrels have. Some of witch are that when you upgrade a Factorization barrel, other players looking at the barrel won't see the upgrade. Second, when breaking a Factorization barrel, the particle affects are the wrong image.
Factorization is more laggy then just having a stand-alone barrels mod. Since Factorization adds all of these other blocks, it will lag your game more.
C) Factorization adds a new ore which many people don't like (like me).
It's not all about how many block ID's use, you gotta look at the other stuff.
A) Oh boo hoo, two visual bugs. However will we manage?
Just....no. It might add maybe 1/5 of a second to your initialization and that's it.
C) # This disables silver ore generation
B:generateSilverOre=false

Just to make my stance clear, I don't have a problem with this mod, changing the textures would have probably avoided all this, but meh. My responce was to 88mooggles saying mod authors don't own their mod, and that all mods SHOULD be open source. But yes this is getting out of hand and I will shut up.
I was not trying to be a jerk either, to the contrary, but sorry but legally at this time the ownership of mods as they are derivative work is not a solid thing... And as Derived work the amount of time and love and unicorns and rainbows we put into them does not necessarily make them "ours". http://firstmonday.o.../view/2971/2529
and may other articles can be found on the subject. Blizzard and EA have been notorious about claiming wide control of the works derived from there software.
My stance on "Open Source" is based out of being of the Older Modding world, In the past Mod makers were not so grumpy and controlling and we shared out knowledge, code and content freely as a community who's sole purpose was not to "Own" anything, but to add to the experience and enjoyment of a game we all loved... Its what we still do in the "ruby script" world of game making.
This community is divide into two groups, the "Haves" and the "Have Not's". This era we live in of "owning" and "possessing" has limited the growth and evolution of creativity and modding.
I understand the want to "Own" your work, but the law is as i said a gray area... here just as it is in the world or art. But really if we were a true "community"...this would not even be an issue... We would share our discoveries and our knowledge to make a stronger forum and base for the world of minecraft.
Mojang gave us flour and chocolate and cherries and sugar and eggs and milk, you make a recipe for cake....
Its the Best cake ever made! Your cake is SOOOO good, better than anyone else's can EVER BE...
Until someone, (maybe even someone in another country that has never and will never see your recipe or cake)
accidentally or with great ingenuity invents a recipe JUST LIKE your recipe on their own.
My friend don't ever forget...
you can't own the cake...
The cake is a lie...
this is almost exactly the same as factorizations barrels except there is one more upgrade ATLEAST Change the crafting recipes they're the same exept the ender barrel using normal iron instead of dark iron

makes it incompatable with factorization barrels if someone wants to use those with this mod installed or maybe inpossible to craft these barrels with factorization installed
Before I installed Factorization I looked around for a mod that only added barrels. In hindsight, I LOVE Factorization and I am glad I got it. I am pleased to see a barrels mod be released though! This will obviously be an answer for many people who want barrels without the entirety of Factorization.
