Thanks for checking out this mod! I hope you like it!
Purpose
This mod adds Brewing Cauldrons. These special cauldrons look identical to the cauldrons that are already in the game, but they have a much greater purpose. Cauldrons as we now have them are almost useless, but in the past they comprised the whole potion system.
In addition, some potion effects are currently unobtainable in potions. These effects include Haste, Water Breathing, Jump Boost, and Mining Fatigue.
Disclaimer
I spent a lot of time creating this mod, but a lot of it is not my own code. I used the decompiled Minecraft 1.9 prerelease 2 .jar for reference when writing all the code. That said, one would be hard-pressed to find glaring similarities between the decompiled code of this mod and the decompiled code from 1.9 prerelease 2, due to the obfuscation Mojang uses.
Also, included with this mod are some images that are part of vanilla Minecraft. They were only included because of limitations on using the same texture for different items/blocks, and I might change the images in the future so that they are unique. I apologize for having to include copied graphics like this.
Crafting Recipe
This mod adds only one crafting recipe, and it's shapeless (you can put the ingredients however you want in the crafting table): a normal cauldron and a brewing stand to create a Brewing Cauldron. This is representative of the purpose of the Brewing Cauldron, which is to brew potions in a cauldron.
Installation
This mod uses the same file for the server and client side, and all the instructions are the same.
Put the .zip in the /mods folder in your Minecraft installation directory OR put it in the /mods section of whatever Minecraft launcher you use (for example, in MultiMC you can right click the instance, click Edit Mods, and put the .zip in the Mods Folder tab).
Start Minecraft and play!
If you have block or item ID conflicts when using this mod and other mods, you can change the block and item IDs this mod uses in the masonsbro_Cauldron.cfg file in the /config directory. Note that the item IDs (but not block IDs) are actually going to be shifted up by 256, so if you enter 5000 the real item ID will be 5256.
Using the Mod
After installing the mod, you should craft a Brewing Cauldron. The crafting recipe is detailed above (brewing stand + cauldron). You can place this on the ground, and it looks exactly the same as a normal cauldron. However, it behaves quite differently: you can add ingredients to the water in it! These ingredients include:
Nether Wart
Sugar
Ghast Tear
Blaze Powder
Magma Cream
Spider Eye
Fermented Spider Eye
You must first fill the cauldron with water by right clicking it with a water bucket. To add an ingredient into your potion, just right click the cauldron with it in your hand. Note that each ingredient can only be used at certain times. This method of brewing is all about experimentation, so it might take you a while to find a good potion. Keep in mind that you can add water to a non-full Brewing Cauldron to "dilute" the potion and change its effects!
To take a potion out of the Brewing Cauldron, whether to drink it or just check its effects, you can right click on the Brewing Cauldron with a glass bottle. This will remove a volume of liquid equal to 1/3rd the capacity of the Brewing Cauldron.
Frequently, when trying to make good potions, one may inadvertently introduce negative effects such as Hunger and Poison. This is generally unavoidable, and even the best potions will likely have at least one negative effect.
This mod does not remove the Brewing Stand system, so if you want the cheap and easy potions without extra effects you can still do so. However, there are two types of Water Bottles now and they are not interchangeable; either will work in Brewing Cauldrons but only one will work in normal cauldrons and Brewing Stands. To go from the Brewing Cauldron only version to the universal version, just drink it (it's just water!).

Videos
I have created a soundless video showing the functionality of this mod. I would appreciate any mod spotlights/reviews of this mod, and I would be happy to post them here.
Version History
The current version is 1.1.0 and it works on Minecraft 1.4.7.
The same way you'd install it on single player: just download the universal .zip from MediaFire, install Minecraft Forge on the server, and put the .zip in /mods (in the server directory).
Thanx you so much! I was looking for some mods for a new feeling to minecraft.
I can start with experimenting again!
This is freaking amazing!
Downloading it defenately. Do you have a banner?
Anyway, please say to people not to spoil recipes nor do it yourself!
I don't have a banner (I'm terrible with graphics). I'm certainly not going to spoil any recipes, and I'll edit the post to request that no one else does.
This looks like a great mod, I am going to install it and I might have a spotlight up for it tomorrow if it is as good as it looks!
Keep up the good work =-)
Just one thing though, can you add a config so that I am able to change the block ID it occupies? It clashes with the mods I am using =-(
Sure! I'll work on adding that today! Thanks!
EDIT: I have added the configuration file! I'll release it in a few minutes, after I test it.
EDIT 2: Released! The configuration file is called masonsbro_Cauldron.cfg
The only way one could possibly improve this mod(in my eyes, anyway) is to make the potions produced able to be turned into throwing potions.
Or make it so it can apply any potion effect within a users game.(so those who have IC2 and Ars Magicka might make a powerful mana restoration potion, but it causes cancer)
I really should test before requesting this, but I'm kind of still setting up my base. Things got blasted to smitheroons by a reactor mishap.
...The cat survived, though. I really need to install better airlocks for that bloody thing.

Those are great ideas!
There are a few problems with including splash potions, and I personally don't mind keeping them exclusive to brewing stands (brewing cauldrons have so many advantages one might not use brewing stands anymore). One reason I couldn't really include it is that potions can seem kind of random in this mod, so there's not really a definitive way to make a certain potion. I could change that for splash potions, and make adding gunpowder set a flag that makes it splash, but that would effectively half the number of potions that can be created.
I would have to do some testing to figure out if including mod potion effects is possible. To explain why, I'll explain a little about the way potion effects are handled. Each potion effect has a string (a sequence of characters) associated with it. This string tells Minecraft what arithmetic and bitwise operations should be performed on a potion to see if it has this effect (at least, that's my understanding). The effects in vanilla Minecraft have different strings than the same effects within this mod. For this reason, I'm not sure if the effects in other mods are compatible with this mod's potion system. If you have a specific mod you'd like me to test it with, please tell me and I'll try it out and see if it works.
Sorry about your base.
Unrelated to the rest of this post:
I think I'll work on an addon for this mod to add the ability to put potions on weapons by right clicking the Brewing Cauldron with it. It will also have a staff (does no base damage, so it can be easily used for healing potion effects; also might have infinite durability) and some kind of similar ranged attack (dart guns? also no base damage).
Actually, screw potion bombs, your staff and dart gun sounds better. Though a Mister might work better then a staff(it releases fluid when you use it, where as a staff would just be a stick with potion goo on it). There are some old kinds which even worked as good ol' maces, but modern misters are pump based, and spill less. If you've ever seen a pump based paint gun, those are what misters look like, just instead of paint, it's whatever fluid you put in it.
Dart Guns sound nice, though one would have to craft the darts and dip them in the potion. A slightly futuristic type would fire the potion in a gaseous state as a ring.(it'd be slightly futuristic because it would be hand held, Not Because it isn't Made Yet)
That being said, I will have to set up a test to see if I can get any non-core potion effects myself, if not, I'll make a formal request for support for at least one mod.

As a fellow that had been hoping for the past few months that someone would bring brewing cauldrons out for those who never got the chance to play with them, I thank you for whipping up this mod. It should be fun.

None of the ideas are final, yet, so I'm always willing to change the item I use. I'll look into the things you suggested. As for the potion effects, in its current state it won't work. The mod includes its own list of potion effects, so only the core ones are possible for now. If you tell me a mod that includes a potion effect you want me to try, I can test a setting in the mod that will fall back to the default strings for the potion effects if the effect is not built-in. If that doesn't work, I can try adding a section to the configuration file and allowing the user to change the potion strings and add their own for mods.
If you go through with the idea for adding mod potions via a config file, it would be nice if you could also set their color somehow. You could even have an automatically supplied config file that people in the thread could help create

Except for the setting colors, that's what I had in mind.
The color-generating system is pretty much hardcoded, though, so I don't think I could do that.
It would be nice if the potion brewing was similar to thaumcraft's. Only in the fact that you need a source of heat and the water to boil.(Aesthetically its nice and it just feels so much more like Im cooking something up!)
Other then that this is brillant! Perhaps you should simply re-imagine the brewing stand. You use the cauldron to make the potion and the stand to make said potion into a splash potion. That way you wouldn't have to recreate your system simply further it to a splash potion setting. So perhaps you make a new item "Splash potion stand" and you cook the potion into a splash potion? Seems simple enough and it really wouldn't touch the generic minecraft potion system ^.^
HOLY MOTHER OF NOTCH I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOD FOREVER
Ever since potion brewing got changed in 1.9 Pre3, I was kind of bored of brewing. Gone was the mysterious complex brewing system with thousands of combinations (literally), just resulting in a boring brewing stand with a max of, what, 90 potions? Hmm..
Thanks for checking out this mod! I hope you like it!

Haha, I'm glad you like the mod!
I might add that; right now the mod is basically a facsimile of the 1.9 pre 2 behavior. I'm not sure I want to deviate from it.
